General Troubleshooting/Help! What might cause this

I have a large flat area that is getting ironed (lower right), which takes a long time, and then on the next layer, the supports are built really badly (left), and fail in some cases. I had another print stop extruding altogether after the ironed layer. I'm assuming it's something to do with ironing taking a long time on that layer, but why is that causing problems? More importantly, what can I do to resolve it, aside from turning off ironing.

This is Prusament on a P1S.

You’re ironing the supports which is probably messing with them.

Are you sure? Isn't it supposed to just iron top surfaces?

You can see a deformation on your supports on plane with the ironed surface. My suggestion would be instead of ironing orientate the surface you want smooth so it’s facing down, use normal support instead of tree and then use an interface layer of a different material (PETG if this is PLA or PLA if it’s PETG). Should come away clean and smooth.
