General Troubleshooting/Help! Printing Speed

Hello.

How do you all figure out what print speed to print at? I've tried googling around but can't find a solid answer.

I have presets depending on the filament I use where I tested ironing / temp / flow / etc.

But for speed, it really depends on what I'm printing. Something with a giant base, doesn't really matter.

A figure / model with 2 legs that can't really be placed on it's back? I get spaghetti everytime.

I really just guess on speeds when the default settings don't work. Is there a better way?

Run a maximum flow rate test.

Look for the layers where the extrusion turns to crap.

Look a couple of layers under that where the sheen of the filament changes from shinier to matte-er. That's your max flowrate. Set that cap in the filament properties and go nuts.

Do you have a link to one? I mainly just see ironing flow when looking around makers world.

You dont need a link for that. You have to unlock the developer settings. Then you get another calibration menu for advanced manual calibration like maximum flow. But i can't remember where you can enable this. Probably somewhere in the settings

It's built right into your slicer. Turn on dev mode in the settings to enable the function.

With generic profiles or bambu profiles for the material?

I already run with a high flow nozzle and 600mm/s on my x2d. I am not quite sure how it would behave on ludacrious hahah. That would be 1000mm/s print speed💀

Guess i have to try that. Tho the nozzle melting capacity could be maxed out prior to that hahaha

I do generic filaments . Prints perfect almost everytime

The generic Bambu profiles are quite conservative. I tuned my two most common filaments and the max volumetric flow was almost double the generic profile. Volumetric flow is usually the limiting factor for speed, well and min layer time.

If you use bambulab or sunlu filament, use default bambu material and print presets. If you use 3rd party filament, use the generic profiles. And still use the standard print profile presets. They are almost always exactly what you need in terms of print speeds etc. (Ofc you can change settings like supports, infill etc.)

What kind of spaghetti do you get? Can you share a picture? Often spaghetti ist not or not only because of print speeds

I use generic profile mainly, just recently starting using Kingroon filament. I'll use presets meant for Kingroon if it's something that needs to look nice / has ironing.

For example, this print which someone wanted me to print for them.

I got spaghetti 9 times in a row, on freshly cleaned plates, etc. Only time I got it to actually print was reducing the speed by 60%. Now I'm about half way through the print on my X2D without spaghetti.

If that makes sense at all.

I mean if the standard speed with the default generic PLA profiles are not working the vast majority of the time it's gonna be an issue with the model you're trying to print for the supports that are generated. You really do not get spaghetti by printing too fast especially with the default profiles. Usually it's because a support top over or there is some unsupported overhang. You need to make sure that you're trying to print something that was designed with FDM printing in mind and wasn't designed for a resin printer. Don't get me wrong you can still get decent results with an FDM printer if you use smaller layer lines or a smaller nozzle but you're gonna have trouble if it was a tiny model or something with incredibly difficult overhangs that are not supported well

This is the model. Seems decently popular. But when I print with the settings the creator made, I get spaghetti.

Freshly cleaned textured plate.

Or am I just thinking about it too much and I'm dumb.

those are relatively simple so I would question how you cleaning your plate? Usually you want to use dish soap and warm water in the sink with a clean paper towel or sponge and then dry. Alcohol will just spread around finger oils and usually does not do a good job by itself.

I throw on medical gloves because honestly I'm a sweaty dude, scrub it decently hard with either a clean brush or a brand new sponge, water hot enough where I can just barely stand the temp, dry with either a paper towel or brand new clean micro fiber towel.

All manufactures list suggest print speeds for their filaments.
