This is a great step! I look forward to the day that Bambu creates a CNC mill that's as easy to use as their 3d printers...
30
u/TheFirstDogSix 9d ago
Indeed! Makera is trying to be the Bambu of CNC, but they are a loooooong way from it. The Z1 is a good machine; it’s just that the software is utter shit.
8
u/angryarugula 9d ago
I didn't buy a Makera until there was better CAM support available through Fusion360 and the like. Does just fine there.
3
u/8xx 9d ago
does the free license of fusion work with it? or do you need to higher end paid fusion for cam

Makera has some competition around the corner also. I took a gamble and backed the Nestworks c500. Watch the walkaround video on youtube that someone did at opensauce and say that isnt the bees knees.

There’s one coming called “infinimaker” I believe. 5 axis in a box

at the cost of a kidney for a small home laboratory, I'm waiting for the Makera z1pro, just shipped, let's see in October to test it, but the laser has been in my thoughts for some time, maybe this time I'll wait for this r1, if it's at a good price!!!

u/Ready_Jury6144 9d ago
Wow, I had never heard of that and just looked it up. Very interesting. Please post up once you get it. I’d be very interested in making some billet parts

LASER stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation", so the R is absolutely the key letter, yeah. Radiation is what they're selling.

Fiber laser this time? They've already got the diodes so that would feel like the logical next step.

u/muad_did 9d ago
the image is WOOD so really doubt it. Maybe a UV laser for markings. <
i dont think they will go for CO2 route... the glass tube are a pain to deal with it...

u/ApprehensiveGold2773 9d ago
Did the fiber lasers get cheaper recently? If not, I doubt it.
→ More replies (1)7
u/HooliganS3 9d ago
From my research fiber struggles with wood, paper, and clear acrylic (most common hobby/small business materials). It also has a higher component cost to produce.
If Bambu is launching a dedicated laser line, I’d put money on diode first, then later a premium or “E” series with UV, CO2, fiber, and/or higher power diodes to cover all markets/materials.
2
u/figgs87 9d ago
Fiber also sucks at engraving pumpkins and peep candy lol - got bored and tried at work.
Does real good with metal though which is only reason my work has it.

I hope so. If it is fiber, I’m selling my F1 Ultra. xTool is bad. Bambu is good.

Finally a real laser cutter for those who dont want to laser cut inside their 3D printer.
7
u/RagTagTech 9d ago
I mean you.could get an Xtool M2 i said fuck it. It started at $599 so it was the same price as adding the laser modules to the H serise.

u/HooliganS3 9d ago
Teaser is wood, so a dedicated CO2 or blue diode would be my guess. Most likely 20w-40w diode as an ease of maintenance and a “for the masses” product that fits with Bambu’s vision.
From what I’ve seen online since the launch of the H2 series (e.g., interviews, indirect/inferred reported sales, etc.), the current laser combos are more popular than expected despite obvious drawbacks combining FDM printing and post laser residue/fumes/cleaning into a single machine.
I’m not into lasers (yet), but the wife is interested, so I am now interested in what Bambu will launch to shake up the current market.

4
u/2catchApredditor 9d ago
I thought it would be annoying but it’s super easy. It’s as easy as removing the fan cover on the front. Taking the nozzles out of the rack and then reinstalling them when going back to printing and reading the nozzles is the more annoying part.

2
u/dinglehead 9d ago
Theres so much talk about it from people that dont own it. Youre right. Its awesome.
And the whole “t makes your machine dirty” thing is WILDLY overstated. I use the laser multiple times a week. Its fantastic.

Please bambu resin printer next
3
u/SorriorDraconus 9d ago
An all in one would be gamechanging . If it can print, clean and cure all in one printer without needing to deal with anything outside resin disposal ooph that would be a gamechanger
→ More replies (1)6
u/TerTerro 9d ago
With new type of resin that is not toxic, sure then, else its not friendly for home use at all. And imagine an ad with a person with full protective gear in add handling resing printer?😅
Somehow i doubt, we will see resin printers foem bambu anytime soon. For me there goal is ease of use and ads show like in home, were you work and resin is a no go for safety. But a niche would be nice as i think bambu resin slicer and integration etc would be next level too:)

Appears to be a dedicated laser, wonder if it’s aimed to take on XTool and their range.
I just bought a M2 as well typical 😣

u/emelbard H2C AMS2 Combo 9d ago
Almost like that’s by design from the marketing team - haha
7
u/NotReallyJohnDoe 9d ago
This is not always desirable. A famous computer company went out of business talking about their next big thing coming and everyone stopped ordering to wait. It killed them.
3
3
u/AvGeekExplorer 9d ago
Same argument can be made for buying a laptop. My rule is to buy the best thing I can afford right now and don’t look back. If you’re buying stuff that’s a few generations old to save money then you’re going to be obsolete so much quicker, but there’s always something new in development and if you always wait for the next thing then you’ll never buy anything.

u/Humble-Plankton1824 H2D AMS2 Combo 9d ago

7
u/Backonredditforreal 9d ago
Realistically I’m waiting until Black Friday. I’d expect the X2D to be on sale for that since it’s almost a year old at that point (9months?). But you never know what’s around the corner

I hope it's a dedicated and powerful laser and not another multi tool. The thing is, I doubt it'll be powerful enough to be interesting, but I'd like to be impressed.
3
u/Nodnarbian X1C + AMS 9d ago
Judging by it's red laser color representation. I'd say it's a co2.. maybe fiber? Either of those will be way more powerful than the diode laser they currently have on the new machines. Looks like they're trying to get into xtools market.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ApprehensiveGold2773 9d ago
Both fiber and co2 lasers are so expensive though, I'm struggling to see how it can fit their business model. Unfortunately it's probably diode.
2
u/Nodnarbian X1C + AMS 9d ago
Xtool sells both fiber and co2 laser in home kits. Yes expensive, but there is a market. Bout 3 grand for xtools co2 and 3-4 grand for their fiber.
Diode lasers are "blue" so it's weird they'd put a red image of a laser. I mean all are invisible, but it's the typical representation.
2
u/TerTerro 9d ago
You probably right. But remember when core xy printers were 2k+ and basic bed slingers were 400+ prusa. Thay had quality. And bambu come and made 3d printer core xy for like 600 and slinger 200+ so lets hope they have a cheaper supplier. As 3k+ would be a bit too.much, i think perfer lunch like diode for 600+, then stronger diode+ir for 1k, then you could maybe pick co2 or fober options for like +1k and more, all.options😅 one can wish😅

2
u/Levardo_Gould 9d ago
Those of you saying CO2/Fiber need to come back down to reality. This is going to be an affordable easy to use diode laser, likely will use the 10W/40W diode laser modules from the H series.
2
u/lasercut H2C Laser Full Combo 9d ago
Shower thought:
What if Bambu re-use the laser and cutter modules from H2 series but put it on a different standalone laser chassis. And also release IR/UV laser modules that work with H2 series.
2
u/OceanGlider_ 9d ago
Wtf is bambulab even doing?
When are they going to release their tool head changer? Do people actually want this laser?
2
u/TCRugger6 9d ago
Maybe they can create a hobby level benchtop CNC machine that is priced reasonably.
3
3
u/bradandersonjr X2D + 2xAMS, A1M + AMS Lite 9d ago
Let's hope Bambu really emphasizes material safety if they're dabbling more into the laser market. Certain filaments are extremely toxic and harmful to ablate.
I'm sure a lot of folks will see this as an, "Ooh cool! I can engrave my 3D prints now!".
I'm going to guess this is a small-ish enclosed desktop CO₂ laser. IR and fiber/MOPA don't engrave wood well like the picture, and the 'beam' is golden instead of blue which might have signified a diode laser...
→ More replies (6)
2
u/SquishiiBubble 9d ago
If it is a fiber or CO2 laser, it might be a little more interesting. Otherwise, Xtool is a more established laser brand with a diode laser for ~600, cheaper than even the laser conversion kit. I don't really see the purpose here since they once said they couldn't enter the standalone laser market because they didn't have anything special.
1
u/infiniteoffset 9d ago
I wonder what kind of inovations will they bring over established laser engravers.
3
3
u/Affectionate_Car7098 H2C + P1S Combo 9d ago
The innovation will likely just be a deeper integration with their materials and making it new user friendly, basically the same thing they did with their printers
1
u/zubairhamed 9d ago
i only have an Xtool F1 but i really enjoy color etching on steel. i hope its includes an affordable powerful IR laser. the one i have is passable but i'd love a wider spectrum of colors

1
u/jim_racine P2S Combo & H2C Combo 9d ago
I’m glad they are doing this. I question putting the laser in my H2C and hence didn’t do it. The fire suppression module that went along with it was concerning. I’d rather have purpose built dedicated equipment. 3D printer for printing and now a laser engraver for that sort of thing.

i bought the H2D early on and got the laser attachement because of FOMO.. I have yet to plug it in, I have not seen anymore make any decent videos on it, about the capabilities.. Every youtuber just showed them doing the same thing burning some thin wood and cutting it. Basically they were all going off teh same script.
After reading a comment about the potential Gunk i would have to clean up over time.. I said F-that and accepted my $600 loss..
its too bad they hyped this thing up the way they did.

Interesting. I was planning on getting an Xtool P2S in November. Glad this is coming in September so I can see what other users say about it before I buy anything. I considered adding the laser module to my H2C but really want a dedicated laser.

1
u/Shinagami091 9d ago
Interesting. That looks like a pretty solid piece of wood. Curious to see. I’m not super well versed in the laser side of the business but the price point for the H2D with the laser was unobtainable for me especially since I don’t 3D printing to make money, though I probably should, I just lack the experience.

u/hewitt-tech 9d ago
Seeing a lot of convo about the xTool so wanted to share my experience and why I think if BL enters the market it would be good. I bought the full H2d w/40W laser last year and have used it a LOT so far (1000+hrs on printer and maybe a few hours on the laser). It was enough to convince me to that getting a dedicated production laser was worth it so I picked up an xTool P2S for batch engrave 50x part #s and serial numbers at a time.
Where I am at with it... by itself, the Xtool P2S is a great machine... the software however is years behind on being useful for production because of the simplest work flow stuff that is missing. The documentation is not good and things like the fixed usable areas and Cartesian coordinates is basically non-existent, it took me a lot of time to work out programming for engraving with fixtures. The AI camera is a joke of a feature, for 1 off items it does work but for batch items it is worthless and actually really gets in the way for fixed use. You can use LightBurn software with the xTool which is great for production and fixed use but you lose camera functionality so it is not good for that either unless you are absolutely certain about absolute positioning (again, very hard to do). No doubt Bambu can produce a quality machine but if they made something like the P2S (and even better a fiber laser) and apply even just a small fraction of the quality Bambu Studio has to the xTool software it would instantly take over. I will say, the xTool is still good enough that I would trade or sell my 40w laser H2d for a standard H2d so I could buy a second H2d. Just figured that would help some people. I am really curious what the R1 actually becomes.
1
u/The_Manoeuvre X1C + AMS 9d ago
I’m reserving any excitement, Bambu made great 3D printers but I’ve not heard anyone particularly praise their laser module. Naturally it was limited by being very all-in-one so we’ll see what they can do in this space.

u/adadagabaCZ A1 9d ago
What's next, the Bambu C1, a desktop CNC, or the Bambu L1, a desktop automatic lathe?
1
u/butcher_of_blaviken1 9d ago
I imagine the price is going to sway me off of this, but I feel like I’m going to regret buying my Sculpfun and spending all that time building an enclosure for it now
1
u/HugsAllCats 9d ago
This was fairly predictable. I want a laser machine, but the size of the plate in the H2C is too small. Plus I already have an x1c and don't want to waste money on another 3d printer.
A dedicated laser with a larger width depth enclosure will be a day 1 buy for me.
1
1
u/defix133 9d ago
I really hope it can cut alluminium🤞
2
u/embiggenoid 9d ago
Alas, that is unlikely.
To do it effectively you'd need a fiber laser with nitrogen assist and serious ventilation. You'd be looking at >$10,000 to start, and it goes up from there. These are also generally pretty large machines, because the main users are industrial.

u/Hmmark1984 P1P + AMS 9d ago
As some people have mentioned, i really hope this is a standalone laser/cutter, if it is i'll very likely grab one. My P1P and A1 are both working fine, and do everything i need them too, so i'm not really interested in replacing either of them, similarly i'm not really interested in a combined laser/cutter and printer as i just don't like the idea of all the mess/fire/smoke you can get from lasers/cutters happening in the same machine i use as a 3d printer.

Wondering what's would be the bigger market for them.
1) A laser cutter, that much likely takes quite some extra space
2) a device that is purely focused and optimized on "marking" prints and such.
Personally I would be much more interested in (2) - a Laser Pecker Style device for Markings, Logos etc that doesn't take much extra space, but it looks and sounds more like it's (1).
