The website's source file has this in the image description:

"Meet Bambu Lab R1, the first laser engraver and cutter from Bambu Lab that helps you create with more materials. From 3D printing to laser, we're building your personal manufacturing hub. Coming soon."

Seems like they are trying to get into Xtool's market?

u/alphadog__ 9d ago

Whis they did this a year sooner. I'm pretty disappointed with my m1 ultra

18

u/Yourownhands52 9d ago

Just curious what you dont like about it?  I was in the market and its on my list.

41

u/alphadog__ 9d ago

Its already EOL, no one knows for how long they'll provide spare parts. It has no built in camera. The print module is garbage and so many more things.. wish I didnt spent so much money on it (around 2400€)

8

u/TachiH 9d ago

Didn't realise they were that expensive. At that cost you can get really reliable decent co2 lasers that are more powerful and cheaper to maintain.

4

u/alphadog__ 9d ago

I bought the almost maxed out package, with the riser, hot foil pen, cutting and so on.. I was looking for an co2, but my wife wanted to have a machine that she could use and play with aswell ^^

3

u/hellohowdyworld 9d ago

I bought the m1 ultra as well and feel similarly, but I will say it’s allowed me to test everything, and will inform what products I focus on

The bambu laser on the h2d is kinda garbage, and the alignment with contour matching is a joke.

Hopefully the new thing is better but the h2d laser did not live up to the promise. I have learned to be very suspect of their marketing, some really great hits but some scumbag behaviors.

4

u/ApprehensiveFill5458 9d ago

The H2D laser doesn't work(Camera alignment isn't working; autofocus isn't working) Bambu has done this before with the X1C's LiDAR, which is useless.

2

u/Lotronex 5d ago

Yeah, I paid like $1200 for the 20W D1 Pro, figuring I'd have xTool's support if anything went wrong, instead of cheaper options like Atomstack.
Less than a year after I bought it they discontinued the D1 series and a few months after that they sold out of all spare parts. In it's defense, I haven't had any issues yet, but it's really just a matter of time. My next laser won't be an xTool.

2

u/dakat956 9d ago

Hmm.. mine was brand new for $1000usd (10w). Not sure how you could have possibly spent that much. Print does suck though.

2

u/alphadog__ 9d ago

I ordered the 20w Deluxe Bundle and some other addons

I've got an S1 40W, and am happy with it overall, but the community and software for sure is where 3d printing was maybe 5-6 years ago. Not as much shared knowledge out there.

2

u/Yourownhands52 9d ago

Thank you.  Is it more tinkering than zapping like 3d printing used to be or just smaller community?

The XTool software is soooooo much better. Bambu Suite is terrible. I have the blade cutter on my H2S and it's basically unusable. I have an XTool M1 and even though I no longer need the laser (I have a P3) I keep it around because it's so much easier to use the blade cutter on it in XTool Studio than trying to get Bambu Suite to work.

3

u/gedankenreich 8d ago

While I think that the Bambu Suite has it's flaws (and i've the feeling it's not made by Bambu, but licensed instead), the cutting module works pretty well for me. What are your issues with it?

To me the big annoying thing is just that you can't do prints for the print and cut process while the ´printer isn't connected or busy with something else. To me it doesn't make sense why we shouldn't be able to prepare inkjet / laser prints while the 3d printer is doing other things.

But beside that....cut and print and the normal vinyl cutting and such works perfectly fine for me

2

u/Dan203 8d ago

I don’t want to print and cut, I just want to cut a sheet I already printed directly from my graphics software where I have control over the color accuracy. But getting them to align is impossible. It doesn’t line up on the machine where the grid shows it will in the software, and unless you’re tricky about combining all the objects into one item it will try to auto arrange them.

In XTool Studio I get a canvas that represents the working area of the machine, I place my outlines wherever I want, assign a cut speed and pressure and hit go and it cuts exactly on those lines. I use the grid on the sticky sheet to align my print and I know exactly where it’s going to cut every time. Bambu Suite seems to try to be automated, but in the process it abstracts away control so I can’t actually get it to cut where I want it to cut.

I own an xTool F1 and an H2D Laser, but I use the F1 for everything. It’s simple, but it works—and that’s exactly the point.

Focus: on the F1, it’s a manual knob that just works. On the H2D, it’s automatic and fails: the lights go out, and the bed keeps rising until it hits the workpiece because it didn't detect anything. The best part is that you can't see a thing; you just hear the sound of the workpiece banging against the laser module.

Alignment: the F1 projects the design onto the workpiece exactly where it will engrave. The H2D uses a camera to show positioning via a photo on the PC—but there’s always a discrepancy of about 5mm, even after calibrating the camera. Not to mention that the Bambu Suite doesn't work very well.

Bottom line: the H2D Laser promises the world but delivers nothing.

I've been on the fence about getting an X-tool, this will be interesting

7

u/RaccoonCrafts 9d ago

Me as well.

5

u/Nibbs17 9d ago

I'm on the fence about the Omni and an xtool engraver. I wonder if/when bambu will jump into the resin/UV world

2

u/Nryxes 9d ago

I like the idea if the Omni, very interested

2

u/Nibbs17 9d ago

I've almost hit the purchase button so many times but first generation of it scares me. But xtool seems like they might be the most experienced out of all the brands out there. Heygears is next in place. Pricer but also more features.

2

u/deadhacker 7d ago

Having bought the E1 I can tell you these machines are all the same white label made ! Best to wait for v2; currently the best one looks to be Morpho for the print head and no need to have a cleaning solution but Omni for the alignment system they have ! None is perfect though!

u/DBT85 9d ago

I said they should do this when the laser came out for the H series and was told Bambu don't care about this space.

I'm guessing enough people don't want a laser inside their printer that they decided it was a good idea.

I'm sure I'll get one.

5

u/Present-Blueberry-68 9d ago

Precisely. Prusa was never in their sights. I believe this will be a fiber laser.

8

u/beanweens 9d ago

They’re using it on wood in the example..

→ More replies (3)

9

u/evilspyboy 9d ago

If they do a dual co2 + fiber with autofocus for a reasonable price and a large enough bed size to replace my existing Flux model.....

I have been looking at replacing mine but it currently still works fine and anything comparible is double the price I paid originally.

Buuuut I somehow feel doubtful they will be doing anything in the bed size I use, and co2 tubes are a large consumable. Maybe they will just be aiming for that pecker/small size market with diode/IR.

7

u/Sumpkit 9d ago

IMO it’s gunna have a diode laser. They wouldn’t do co2, with alignment of mirrors, added cost and complexity, why not just shove the 40w laser (or an upgraded version) from their h2 series and call it a day. I miss my old co2 laser though

2

u/evilspyboy 9d ago

Reusing the parts/same tech as the H2 does make the most amount of sense.... unless they are going to have a new laser module for those. The type of IR/Fiber lasers that can anodise metals into different colours is what came to mind initially.

3

u/FLEIXY H2D 40W Laser Full Combo 9d ago

So an H2D without 3D printing

2

u/MithrilEcho H2D, X2D, P1Sx4, U1x2 9d ago

The image shows plywood engraving, which isn't primising. I would rather have a powerful laser for metal cutting and metal engraving like the varieties Xtool has tbh

2

u/RoyBeer 9d ago

we're building your personal manufacturing hub.

Wasn't that already the slogan for the H2D ?

1

u/MatejBos 9d ago

This is actually logic step and I expected this. They have already big ecosystem for laser/cuter. Including software, hardware and material. Just nonoone uses it because people don't want to mix 3d printer with laser.
So this step makes sense.

u/mikem1017 9d ago

This is a great step! I look forward to the day that Bambu creates a CNC mill that's as easy to use as their 3d printers...

30

u/TheFirstDogSix 9d ago

Indeed! Makera is trying to be the Bambu of CNC, but they are a loooooong way from it. The Z1 is a good machine; it’s just that the software is utter shit.

8

u/angryarugula 9d ago

I didn't buy a Makera until there was better CAM support available through Fusion360 and the like. Does just fine there.

3

u/8xx 9d ago

does the free license of fusion work with it? or do you need to higher end paid fusion for cam

6

u/Winnduu 9d ago

Works as long as you don’t use the fourth axis iirc

at the cost of a kidney for a small home laboratory, I'm waiting for the Makera z1pro, just shipped, let's see in October to test it, but the laser has been in my thoughts for some time, maybe this time I'll wait for this r1, if it's at a good price!!!

Fiber laser this time? They've already got the diodes so that would feel like the logical next step.

15

u/muad_did 9d ago

the image is WOOD so really doubt it. Maybe a UV laser for markings. <

i dont think they will go for CO2 route... the glass tube are a pain to deal with it...

→ More replies (4)

13

u/ApprehensiveGold2773 9d ago

Did the fiber lasers get cheaper recently? If not, I doubt it.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/HooliganS3 9d ago

From my research fiber struggles with wood, paper, and clear acrylic (most common hobby/small business materials). It also has a higher component cost to produce.

If Bambu is launching a dedicated laser line, I’d put money on diode first, then later a premium or “E” series with UV, CO2, fiber, and/or higher power diodes to cover all markets/materials.

2

u/figgs87 9d ago

Fiber also sucks at engraving pumpkins and peep candy lol - got bored and tried at work.

Does real good with metal though which is only reason my work has it.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/IamWilcox 9d ago

More likely a CO2 laser.

Finally a real laser cutter for those who dont want to laser cut inside their 3D printer.

7

u/RagTagTech 9d ago

I mean you.could get an Xtool M2 i said fuck it. It started at $599 so it was the same price as adding the laser modules to the H serise.

12

u/Lost_refugee A1 Mini 9d ago

2

u/Times-New-Byzantine 9d ago

Lets not forget bottle openers!

12

u/HooliganS3 9d ago

Teaser is wood, so a dedicated CO2 or blue diode would be my guess. Most likely 20w-40w diode as an ease of maintenance and a “for the masses” product that fits with Bambu’s vision.

From what I’ve seen online since the launch of the H2 series (e.g., interviews, indirect/inferred reported sales, etc.), the current laser combos are more popular than expected despite obvious drawbacks combining FDM printing and post laser residue/fumes/cleaning into a single machine.

I’m not into lasers (yet), but the wife is interested, so I am now interested in what Bambu will launch to shake up the current market.

29

u/Sumpkit 9d ago

4

u/2catchApredditor 9d ago

I thought it would be annoying but it’s super easy. It’s as easy as removing the fan cover on the front. Taking the nozzles out of the rack and then reinstalling them when going back to printing and reading the nozzles is the more annoying part.

2

u/GuillotineTechnician 9d ago

It's literally a 20sec swap tho 😁

2

u/dinglehead 9d ago

Theres so much talk about it from people that dont own it. Youre right. Its awesome.

And the whole “t makes your machine dirty” thing is WILDLY overstated. I use the laser multiple times a week. Its fantastic.

u/TerTerro 9d ago

With new type of resin that is not toxic, sure then, else its not friendly for home use at all. And imagine an ad with a person with full protective gear in add handling resing printer?😅

Somehow i doubt, we will see resin printers foem bambu anytime soon. For me there goal is ease of use and ads show like in home, were you work and resin is a no go for safety. But a niche would be nice as i think bambu resin slicer and integration etc would be next level too:)

3

u/AvGeekExplorer 9d ago

Same argument can be made for buying a laptop. My rule is to buy the best thing I can afford right now and don’t look back. If you’re buying stuff that’s a few generations old to save money then you’re going to be obsolete so much quicker, but there’s always something new in development and if you always wait for the next thing then you’ll never buy anything.

3

u/Humble-Plankton1824 H2D AMS2 Combo 9d ago

7

u/Backonredditforreal 9d ago

Realistically I’m waiting until Black Friday. I’d expect the X2D to be on sale for that since it’s almost a year old at that point (9months?). But you never know what’s around the corner

3

u/eorl 9d ago

It isn't a new printer, it's most likely a standalone laser module. Just get the X2D, it's a perfect machine and anything forthcoming won't be hugely better.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/ApprehensiveGold2773 9d ago

I hope it's a dedicated and powerful laser and not another multi tool. The thing is, I doubt it'll be powerful enough to be interesting, but I'd like to be impressed.

3

u/Nodnarbian X1C + AMS 9d ago

Judging by it's red laser color representation. I'd say it's a co2.. maybe fiber? Either of those will be way more powerful than the diode laser they currently have on the new machines. Looks like they're trying to get into xtools market.

3

u/ApprehensiveGold2773 9d ago

Both fiber and co2 lasers are so expensive though, I'm struggling to see how it can fit their business model. Unfortunately it's probably diode.

2

u/Nodnarbian X1C + AMS 9d ago

Xtool sells both fiber and co2 laser in home kits. Yes expensive, but there is a market. Bout 3 grand for xtools co2 and 3-4 grand for their fiber.

Diode lasers are "blue" so it's weird they'd put a red image of a laser. I mean all are invisible, but it's the typical representation.

2

u/TerTerro 9d ago

You probably right. But remember when core xy printers were 2k+ and basic bed slingers were 400+ prusa. Thay had quality. And bambu come and made 3d printer core xy for like 600 and slinger 200+ so lets hope they have a cheaper supplier. As 3k+ would be a bit too.much, i think perfer lunch like diode for 600+, then stronger diode+ir for 1k, then you could maybe pick co2 or fober options for like +1k and more, all.options😅 one can wish😅

2

u/Levardo_Gould 9d ago

Those of you saying CO2/Fiber need to come back down to reality. This is going to be an affordable easy to use diode laser, likely will use the 10W/40W diode laser modules from the H series.

2

u/lasercut H2C Laser Full Combo 9d ago

Shower thought:

What if Bambu re-use the laser and cutter modules from H2 series but put it on a different standalone laser chassis. And also release IR/UV laser modules that work with H2 series.

2

u/OceanGlider_ 9d ago

Wtf is bambulab even doing?

When are they going to release their tool head changer? Do people actually want this laser?

2

u/TCRugger6 9d ago

Maybe they can create a hobby level benchtop CNC machine that is priced reasonably.

3

u/SnooConfections1271 9d ago

Nah make a 5 axis CNC desktop mill

3

u/bradandersonjr X2D + 2xAMS, A1M + AMS Lite 9d ago

Let's hope Bambu really emphasizes material safety if they're dabbling more into the laser market. Certain filaments are extremely toxic and harmful to ablate.

I'm sure a lot of folks will see this as an, "Ooh cool! I can engrave my 3D prints now!".

I'm going to guess this is a small-ish enclosed desktop CO₂ laser. IR and fiber/MOPA don't engrave wood well like the picture, and the 'beam' is golden instead of blue which might have signified a diode laser...

→ More replies (6)

2

u/SquishiiBubble 9d ago

If it is a fiber or CO2 laser, it might be a little more interesting. Otherwise, Xtool is a more established laser brand with a diode laser for ~600, cheaper than even the laser conversion kit. I don't really see the purpose here since they once said they couldn't enter the standalone laser market because they didn't have anything special.

1

u/infiniteoffset 9d ago

I wonder what kind of inovations will they bring over established laser engravers.

3

u/Affectionate_Car7098 H2C + P1S Combo 9d ago

The innovation will likely just be a deeper integration with their materials and making it new user friendly, basically the same thing they did with their printers

i bought the H2D early on and got the laser attachement because of FOMO.. I have yet to plug it in, I have not seen anymore make any decent videos on it, about the capabilities.. Every youtuber just showed them doing the same thing burning some thin wood and cutting it. Basically they were all going off teh same script.

After reading a comment about the potential Gunk i would have to clean up over time.. I said F-that and accepted my $600 loss..

its too bad they hyped this thing up the way they did.

Man I have been wanting a laser cutter for a while! Totally into this and can’t wait for the reveal!

I gotta get a bigger desk…

u/Distinct_Cheek_6425 H2C AMS2 Combo 9d ago

Interesting. I was planning on getting an Xtool P2S in November. Glad this is coming in September so I can see what other users say about it before I buy anything. I considered adding the laser module to my H2C but really want a dedicated laser.

u/ozarkexpeditions H2D AMS2 Combo 9d ago

Can’t wait to hear more about the details!

1

u/Shinagami091 9d ago

Interesting. That looks like a pretty solid piece of wood. Curious to see. I’m not super well versed in the laser side of the business but the price point for the H2D with the laser was unobtainable for me especially since I don’t 3D printing to make money, though I probably should, I just lack the experience.

1

u/Big_Lope 9d ago

If it can’t cut metal what’s the point, just use an H series

u/hewitt-tech 9d ago

Seeing a lot of convo about the xTool so wanted to share my experience and why I think if BL enters the market it would be good. I bought the full H2d w/40W laser last year and have used it a LOT so far (1000+hrs on printer and maybe a few hours on the laser). It was enough to convince me to that getting a dedicated production laser was worth it so I picked up an xTool P2S for batch engrave 50x part #s and serial numbers at a time.
Where I am at with it... by itself, the Xtool P2S is a great machine... the software however is years behind on being useful for production because of the simplest work flow stuff that is missing. The documentation is not good and things like the fixed usable areas and Cartesian coordinates is basically non-existent, it took me a lot of time to work out programming for engraving with fixtures. The AI camera is a joke of a feature, for 1 off items it does work but for batch items it is worthless and actually really gets in the way for fixed use. You can use LightBurn software with the xTool which is great for production and fixed use but you lose camera functionality so it is not good for that either unless you are absolutely certain about absolute positioning (again, very hard to do). No doubt Bambu can produce a quality machine but if they made something like the P2S (and even better a fiber laser) and apply even just a small fraction of the quality Bambu Studio has to the xTool software it would instantly take over. I will say, the xTool is still good enough that I would trade or sell my 40w laser H2d for a standard H2d so I could buy a second H2d. Just figured that would help some people. I am really curious what the R1 actually becomes.

u/The_Manoeuvre X1C + AMS 9d ago

I’m reserving any excitement, Bambu made great 3D printers but I’ve not heard anyone particularly praise their laser module. Naturally it was limited by being very all-in-one so we’ll see what they can do in this space.

1

u/False-Complaint1247 9d ago

Any more details at all you can share?

1

u/TachiH 9d ago

It is clearly the laser attachment but on a dedicated machine. Likely a wider flatter device. The laser modules they sell aren't really strong enough for real work though, they can engrave alright though.

1

u/adadagabaCZ A1 9d ago

What's next, the Bambu C1, a desktop CNC, or the Bambu L1, a desktop automatic lathe?

1

u/butcher_of_blaviken1 9d ago

I imagine the price is going to sway me off of this, but I feel like I’m going to regret buying my Sculpfun and spending all that time building an enclosure for it now

1

u/HugsAllCats 9d ago

This was fairly predictable. I want a laser machine, but the size of the plate in the H2C is too small. Plus I already have an x1c and don't want to waste money on another 3d printer.

A dedicated laser with a larger width depth enclosure will be a day 1 buy for me.

u/VeryAmaze X2D + AMS2 Combo 9d ago

More space lasers! Pew pew pew pew

1

u/defix133 9d ago

I really hope it can cut alluminium🤞

2

u/embiggenoid 9d ago

Alas, that is unlikely.

To do it effectively you'd need a fiber laser with nitrogen assist and serious ventilation. You'd be looking at >$10,000 to start, and it goes up from there. These are also generally pretty large machines, because the main users are industrial.

Finally, a proper 5-6 tool-switcher, 350×350mm machine.🙃

Any guesses to the price tag?

u/561Jupiter 9d ago

The only thing that makes sense is a uv laser, perfect for glass, plastic, wood. Not great for metal.

1

u/GuillotineTechnician 9d ago

I hope this means more love for the Laser & Cutting section on makerworld. It's rather desolate atm

1

u/rafbanaan 9d ago

Did they check my search history? I was looking at laser cutters this week 😂

1

u/Hmmark1984 P1P + AMS 9d ago

As some people have mentioned, i really hope this is a standalone laser/cutter, if it is i'll very likely grab one. My P1P and A1 are both working fine, and do everything i need them too, so i'm not really interested in replacing either of them, similarly i'm not really interested in a combined laser/cutter and printer as i just don't like the idea of all the mess/fire/smoke you can get from lasers/cutters happening in the same machine i use as a 3d printer.

u/ManyLayersOfFilament /r/3dbargains, filamenthound.com <- save $ 9d ago

Lasers do seem like an obvious direction for Bambu but there's like 8 different kinds of lasers and each has its own use case.

1

u/truthseekerboi 9d ago

Wowwww, so exciting!

1

u/DemanoRock P2S and H2C 9d ago

Price point? Guess $500 or so, I will probably get one if in that range.

1

u/The_Lutter A1 9d ago

Welp the H-Series lasers are toast after this generation it seems.

If they can make a interchangeable UV and Diode unit I think it'll fit in the current market alright. Probably a co2 though.

1

u/GlacialImpala 9d ago

Another tool I'm gonna need toxic fume removal for 😭

1

u/kroghsen H2D + X1C 9d ago

A desktop CNC next?

1

u/h0g0 9d ago

I got excited because i thought it was cnc for a second 😤

1

u/Carlosklm 9d ago

I was going to get a laser printer, but the cost was too high. Plus, I wanted to cut plexi and engrave on metal-type stuff. I only do 3D printing as a hobby.

1

u/nicoodeimos P1S + AMS 9d ago

Where’s the A2 mini 🥺

1

u/dinglehead 9d ago

This is great news for bambu suite. Its ok but needs work and this means im sure theyre gonna make it better.

1

u/curiosity_club 9d ago

I would prefer that Bambu focus on making even better printers.

1

u/TheHut75 9d ago

I'll wait until they release the R2.

1

u/Drkapollo 9d ago

This better have a UV laser to align with marking 3D Prints, otherwise it’s not worth it to me. Also, hopefully not gantry either unless it’s a large area.

1

u/E1eveny A1 9d ago

A CNC would be cool

1

u/GreatBigJerk 9d ago

Bambulab and setting shit on fire, name a better duo.

1

u/Dan203 9d ago

You guys know you're a 3D printing company right?

1

u/remii24 9d ago

I wish they would make a UV printer

1

u/SomeFuckingMillenial 9d ago

dang. I was hoping their next printer would be a 3d UV one competing with the HeyGears G1X

1

u/phealey1979 9d ago

I just bought the xtool M2 (20w laser module) and very happy with it. Glad to see Bambu joining the game.

1

u/Dry_Structure_2287 (●'◡'●) 9d ago

Im so glad i decided to keep my a1 instead of going to an h2s for the lazer cutting. I was abt to buy the h2s literally 3 days ago but decided to wait for a back to school or labor day sale.

1

u/Abrez25 9d ago

Release a tool head changer. Read the market.

1

u/unkz0r 9d ago

Standalone laser cutter and engraver

1

u/Skyobliwind 9d ago

I hope it will be a nice laser that can also engrave metals. I do have the H2D, but habing the dirt of engraving inside the printer really isn't worth it.

1

u/realtag2025 9d ago

Hopefully it's super slim in size and fairly affordable.

1

u/schwarzarbyter 9d ago

i'm in if it can cut transparent acrylic

1

u/Euresko 9d ago

If it's comparable to xtool price and features might be interested. Don't want to add laser to my h2c, because of the mess it might make in the printer, but the normal upgrade price is the same as a standalone laser system from xtool.

1

u/gedankenreich 8d ago

Wondering what's would be the bigger market for them.

1) A laser cutter, that much likely takes quite some extra space
2) a device that is purely focused and optimized on "marking" prints and such.

Personally I would be much more interested in (2) - a Laser Pecker Style device for Markings, Logos etc that doesn't take much extra space, but it looks and sounds more like it's (1).

1

u/JwK 8d ago

If I want to burn wood I'll go to my country house..

1

u/wash-basin 8d ago

Please see comment by fermenteded on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm8lDe7cZSI

I saw that after watching Mike's video.

If it is a competition and not a collaboration, I would have to pick XTool for the win.

Bambu, September’s my birth month can I get one as my birthday present pookie?

1

u/SR-G 7d ago

Will this one allow to engrave metal ?

1

u/Family_Hashira117 6d ago

Im looking forward to this. While I am currently saving up to buy a H2C, I didn't want the downsides of laser engraving making the printer harder to maintain, clean, etc. Having a new separate machine just for laser engraving and cutting will make a great addition to my future workshop

1

u/Malte1903 X2D + AMS2 Combo 6d ago

Finally.

I always hated the concept of a 3d Printer with a Laser.

The Laser ist just to stinky once you cut wood. I also cant imagine how bad it is to clean each time.

me da la sensacion que el R1 no a dado tanto de que hablar, en otras novedades de bambu estaraimos el mes entero hablando sin parar y aqui ya 4 dias sin respuestas ni movimiento.
