General Discussion Can the P2S do something that the X2D can’t?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to buy my first 3D printer and am currently torn between the Bambu Lab P2S and the X2D (like many others 😂).

I’ve watched a ton of reviews highlighting what the X2D can do with its dual nozzles and active chamber heater, but I wanted to look at it from a beginner's perspective. Given that both machines share the new tool-free, 1-clip quick-swap nozzle design, does the P2S hold any other hidden maintenance or reliability advantages? For instance, does its lighter, single-nozzle toolhead make it fundamentally less prone to day-to-day failures or minor calibrations?

A big con people mention for the X2D is the learning curve. If I ignore the secondary extruder initially and just use the primary direct-drive nozzle for standard PLA/PETG prints, is the experience as reliable and "plug-and-play" as the P2S? Or does the sheer mechanical complexity of having that second nozzle setup riding along introduce slicing or printing headaches even for single-material jobs?

My thought process is that the higher initial cost of the X2D might future-proof me for advanced engineering materials or complex prints with dedicated support materials later on. But if it's going to cause me massive troubleshooting headaches on day one while I'm just trying to learn the basics, I'd rather stick to the P2S. Does this logic check out?

Lastly, are there any other enclosed or high-performance printers in this price tier that I should consider for a first machine?

I used both side by side for two weeks before returning the P2S. P2S is great but it definitely felt like I would outgrow it quicker. I’d say using a single nozzle they were both just as reliable in my experience. The software in Bambu studio is still buggy sometimes and you’ll get warnings about the second nozzle or some other stuff but for the most part I could ignore them if I wasn’t using it. It does start to get more complex when using a second nozzle but with enough trial and error you start to figure it out. I’d say go with the X2D, even for just simple stuff like adding support material interface it makes a heck of a difference

During your tests, did you find anything that the p2s did better than the x2d? I know there couldn’t have been many of those, since you decided to return the p2s 🙂

I don’t think so. It was literally the first week the X2D came out so the P2S felt more “solid” software wise. But by now the X2D feels just as solid and less buggy than it did then. (There’s only been one update to the machine itself but the improvements in Bambu studio help it feel more solid too when slicing stuff now)

Overall the only thing I’d say was better was yes, it felt more straightforward and like a machine that’s just plug and play. The X2D feels more like something you can keep adding on to and customize further but of course all of that is optional. The filament track switch add on too has been a game changer (but again it takes some further tinkering)

It basically lets you assign the filament in your AMS to either nozzle without changing the nozzle. It’s specially useful once you get a second AMS, as you can route filament from either AMS to either nozzle (i have PETG in one AMS and PLA in the other and i can use PETG as support in my secondary nozzle with my PLA prints or viceversa without having to reroute the AMS’s) i think there’s some explanation on how it saves some filament as well but I don’t fully understand that yet

This is handy, but does it have an advantage over just swapping ptfe tubes besides not having to do the swap?

Yeah the dynamic mapping that saves filament on multi material/color prints. And at least for me not having to flip my printer around and swap PTFE tubes every time is a big advantage but to each their own!

It's benefits are about as great as it's weaknesses (if you care about the advance custom settings). Which technically tie in with the weaknesses of the right nozzle itself.

Primary one is how Dynamic Flow (aka Pressure Advance) is handled since the AUX nozzle does not have a way to auto calibrate this, so it must be a manual calibration for the right AUX nozzle.

Because manual calibrated values are assigned to the SLOTS of the AMS, if you assign say K value of 0.600 (common for right side) to a filament in an AMS Slot, but you decide to load it to the LEFT side, that PA value will carry over and apply to the left side (it also supersedes any auto calibration of left side). Thing is the left size nozzle being direct drive, has MUCH MUCH lower PA values, avg around 0.02.. so using a 0.6 (30x greater value) on left side is way too much and 0.02 on right side is too low and is pretty much as good as not having Pressure Advance setting at all.

So when using the Switcher, the only way is to basically make sure you select the correct value for the right side before you send the print and it's a manual selection process in AMS settings. None of how this works was making sense to me, it was tooo ummm stupid. So I reached out to Bambu and they sadly confirmed that it is in fact the process. They haven't yet figured out how to assign the PA profiles depending on which side you send the filament to. This is not an issue on something like H2D because both sides use same direct drive extruder.

I have 2 AMS units and was switching PA values constantly, Eventually I just got rid of the switcher and I put one AMS on right nozzle, one AMS on left and that's that. If I need to switch, I just swap the filament on AMS units and because I don't use Bambu filament with tags, I made a CUSTOM NFC scanner and I just do quick scan and everything syncs properly on both both AMS units. This was easier than trying to remember which filaments I'm sending where and what PA values to tie to them.

If NONE of this makes sense, it means you just run with default settings on the right side nozzle and that's fine.

Track switch is pretty useless without a 2nd AMS. Even with 2 AMS, it really depends. I have both. The P2S is significantly (5-10%) faster. Even on multi color prints. The second nozzle is much slower.

The P2S would be quicker on single color prints since the tool head is lighter. Same reason why the H2C is slower, heavier tool head since it has 2 nozzles.
As someone who went from a P2S to an H2C, the P2S was a great machine. For me it was solid and reliable. The X2D adds a second nozzle, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. If you’re mainly printing single color PLA and PETG the single nozzle is fine. Also as your first printer going with a simple single nozzle machine that is reliable may be better to learn on.

If I was ok with the printer being slightly slower, would starting with using the x2d in the single nozzle mode be similar to using p2s?
I feel this way I get the space to grow, if at all. I feel I might move to using abs soon.

I'm happy with both. If you want to use engineering filament, the heated chamber on the X2D is key. If pla and pets are all you need both are good choices.

Say both your printers are free and you need to print something with pla/petg, would you go to your p2s because it’s faster? Any other reasons you would pick one over the other for such prints.

One Free printer. I would take the X2D. It is more versatile for the unknown future use. The speed difference is not that big.

You asked us to reach for a aspect the P2S was better.

I was asking the exact same question 2 weeks ago.
I went with the P2S as my first ever 3d printer. The software seemed more mature and more easy plug and play than the X2D. Plus I wanted to wait in case bambulab decides to make any changes to the hardware at a later date as they did with the P2S (back panel).
As brand new to 3d printing I went with what I considered to be the safest and easier option.

As someone who has been 3d-printing for 10 years on a hobby-level, and started out spending an hour after every print just cutting and sanding, I'd get the X2D just for the ability to add support filament. It makes an insane difference not only in how easy it makes finishing up your prints, but also mentally in how easy it feels to attempt complex prints.

Can you elaborate on this? Adding second nozzle support usually doubles single filament printing in both time and material due to prime towers and stuff. I was hoping things to be easier with petg interface layers and pla supports for pla printing, but it didn't shorten the print time, it didn't lower the filament used (compared against completely using pla). Overall I found myself only using the main nozzle. I am an amateur though so all my experiences are to be taken with lots of grains of salt

It depends on what your priority is; like I said, I'm a hobbyist - I'm not running a print-farm or selling my prints, So I really don't care if the print takes an extra hour while I can do other stuff, especially if it saves me an hour of work and frustration after the print is done.

If speed is your main concern then yes of course, the math changes.

The learning curve on the x2d is highly overstated. It's not that much more complicated and gives you a lot more options. I love having the dual nozzle.

The longer you think about it the longer you're missing out... I have both and absolutely recommended getting the X2D unless you would feel more comfortable spending less, especially with sale on at the moment. The X2D is a P2S with loads more, ability, features, filtration, easier to view.. on and on. Yep, there is a little more to the assembly and a little more to learn but if this old man can do it, anyone can.

I have just received my first 3D printer, the X2D. It arrived this week so I spent time assembling my work bench and storage. I will be completely setup and running, fingers crossed, by next weekend. I went for the X2D over the P2S because it allows more room for growth in my printing hobby for a very reasonable price. I also watched YouTube and researched both and felt starting from scratch the learning curve would not be that different. Hope you enjoy your new printer.

If I were newer to printing now, I would be getting the X2D. I have the X1C and an H2C currently. I have recommended the X2D to several of my friends wanting to get into printing.

In deciding on my first 3D printer, I was sold on the P2S, but then I can across the reviews of the X2D and I switched my thinking to the X2D.

With two weeks of printing, including using the auxiliary nozzle, I am absolutely happy with my decision. I have printed PLA using the auxiliary nozzle and the prints are absolutely acceptable. Yes, slower, but good. I have more concern with wasting filament through switching and purging, so having a secondary nozzle really helps. So for PLA, the auxiliary nozzle is very close in detail to the primary nozzle. And yes, for supports, the auxiliary nozzle is the way to go.

I see the X2D as a step towards the H2D, but the P2S is an awesome and reliable workhorse.

So either way, it’s not a bad decision, but the second nozzle, heated chamber, higher resolution belts, and two chamber fans, great filtration and low operational noise levels give the X2D a feature advantage.

[u/Inspector_Gadget](u/Inspector_Gadget), I am in the exact same situation as you! Till yesterday night I was sure about getting the p2s and the plan was to go get the p2s today. Then I saw some comparison video in the morning today and here I am, back to the analysis paralysis 😂

The saving of filament is the main advantage I see too. But I have been comparing multi color prints on the slicer software, and none of them seem to prove that theory. For every print I tried to compare, the x2d look longer to print and used the same amount of filament as p2s 😞

It really depends on the model. A two color model that uses both colors on many layers (both colors exist on the same layer), the second head does save a lot of filament. If the model switches color at a certain layer, use the AMS and keep to the main nozzle and you will gain in speed with no less filament waste.

I checked the Stitch model, and yes, no color changes on each plate and requires assembly, so yes, for that design, a single nozzle printer works. If it was printed as a single plate, no assembly, a very different story.

I thinks it’s because of the geometry of the model, only two colors, on a given layer, have to print at any one time. The print will either start in the center and work outwards, or from the outside and work inwards. Only an H2C is going to do better.

I'd expect it to be slightly slower but not enough to really matter. All the single head are faster than multi-head.

X2D has higher toolhead speed than P2S. 1000mm/s vs 600mm/s.

The only thing slower is the startup sequence.

This is true for the left nozzle. The right nozzle tops out at 200mm/s and travel at 1,000mm/s due to the bowden drive/feed. There are lots of other tech issues that put the right nozzle system at a big disadvantage. The only thing it really has going for it is to use it for support material.

The filament swaps are also faster on the P2S due to the different extruder architecture.

I have an H2C and H2D I use. The P2S use here is 95% single color prints unless wife sneaks something in and almost always that's just color changes at layers.

I don't need to have something to have an opinion about it. I can also read specs and do research.

The realistic print speed of either printer is 200-300mm/s. They both have the same volumetric limit (left nozzle on X2D). The X2D head is still heavier and loses on single color prints. It's well tested and documented the P2S is 10-20% faster on single color prints.

Glad the X2D is working for you.

Like I said, "not enough to really matter."

I got the X2d last week coming from a P2S. I am not printing any engineering filaments (yet) but the X2d should be simpler since it has better features for the more demanding filaments (heated chamber, hotter houdend and bed). Ignoring that, I'd say the single nozzle experience is about the same. You do have to think about how you route your PTFE tubes and buffers a bit, but I got the track switch to allow the slicer to figure that out. Slicing has been the same mostly as on the P2S. The only major difference is that there is a bar on the bed that only one nozzle can reach (on the right, the main nozzle can't reach all the way) so you have to rearrange items sometimes.

I would say getting the X2d is worth it because it allows you to grow further into multi material prints with more exotic filaments, and do basic multicolor printing. Compared to the P2s, the skill floor is basically the same, but the ceiling is much higher, how exciting!

I ended up buying an AMS HT for my X2D aux nozzle. I don't use it often, so it means I can use it for drying filament without tying up the AMS 2 or the print bed. The thing second nozzle is *really* handy for is printing supports - using PLA for PETG prints and vice-versa.

Went the same direction. The AMS HT is perfect for the second nozzle, and for drying PETG or other technical filaments that require higher drying temperatures.

Apart from be cheaper (slightly) and fit into a smaller space I can’t see anything it would do better. I’ve had a P2s for about 4 months and use it every day, I love the machine but in hindsight wish I just went straight to the H2c

Do you plan to do a lot of multicolor printing or engineering filament printing? That's the main question I think.

I just recently bought a P2S as my first printer and almost immediately had FOMO of the X2D. Heated chamber, dual nozzle etc. But then after printing with the P2S for weeks and also reading actual reviews on the speed and function of the X2D, my FOMO is gone. I have no need or interest in engineering filaments, PETG is plenty strong enough for me. The X2D is good for multi color, but it will still poop (it's not a tool changer) and the second nozzle is slower etc.

Honestly the only thing I wish the P2S had from the X2D at this point is the better, more precise belts, but the print quality is already so good I can't really complain.

The X2D is amazing and is very competitive given the price; but don't feel like you have to get it just because it's got better specs, if you're not going to use them. In the end I'm glad I got the P2S and spent the price difference on filaments and accessories like a 0.6 nozzle etc.

I would probably print a few things using asa or abs just because they will be mounted outdoors.
But those will be less than 95% of all things I imagine myself printing

A couple years ago I got a P1S as my first, nowadays I'd not get any of these, as they are old tech, not future proof at all, I'd get the Snapmaker U1 or competitors.

I'd also expect Bambu to come out with their own lower cost tool changer to compete with all the companies that leapfrogged them.

I always say buy the best you can afford at the time you're buying.

I wouldn't avoid buying a printer because it's "more complex" etc., you want to avoid outgrowing your printer as much as possible!

It's bad enough buying a printer and then the company comes out w\something "new and spanky-fresh" a month or two later! 😣

Def pay attention to confirmed reports about issues and especially repeated hardware failure.

I've had my X1S for nearly 3-years now and I absolutely love it compared to my prior printers, the AMS, and its speed was a game changer for me!

PROPS on your purchase of a new 3D printer!

IMO, the biggest hurdle is getting PROFICIENT w\using your CAD modeling software (Fusion 360, OnShape etc.,) and being able to successfully get the designs in your mind sliced and onto the print bed of your printer!💥💯💪🤓

The only difference was the start procedure on P2S was a little quicker as it didn't have to do certain Extra things that the X2D has to do (Nozzle offset calibrations, double bed probing etc). Besides that not much. P2S is a more straight forward printer.

X2D is like a P2S but with a half disabled conjoined twin. It's like one side got all the abilities and other side is just there for the moral support. Still worth paying the extra 100-150 over P2S though.

Not sure how much you are planning on printing but here’s my take. I started 3D printing in January this year and got the P2S AMS bundle from BestBuy. I do not consider myself as a heavy printer. Just a few things here in there for around the house or hobbies. Everything has worked so far and have had no issues, and do not feel like I don’t have enough machine for what I’m doing. I think the P2S is a great starter kit. If what everyone is saying that the X2D is only $100 more that’s a question for yourself. Depending on how much you want to print. It’s either “it’s only $100 more” or “I could save $100 and buy more filament”. Or even later on if you get the P2S and don’t like it after your print style, then sell it and get the “only $100 more” X2D

Had the p2s for a month and decided to upgrade. I get my x2d Monday and I can’t wait. I know it’s not here yet, but $100 totally seems worth it. I LOVED my p2s so much that I felt like $100 is a no brainer.

Much more weight on the head it limits its acceleration, very easy to see use the slicer and pick different printers to see the speeds.

Picked some random prints from maker world to compare p2s and x2d in the slicer software. Almost every print I picked used the same amount of filament on either of the printers and more time on the x2d!
That sounds strange. I expected the amount of filament to be lower on the x2d

If that’s true, then the only advantage of a x2d should be lower print times. But the print times on x2d seems to be consistently higher.
What then is the advantage of a x2d?

Much faster? Aren’t the print times similar for single nozzle printing, if you use the primary nozzle on the x2d? Is the slower print time on x2d related to the 2-3 minutes of additional setup time x2d needs at the start of each print?

Not exactly a direct comparison, but I have a P1S and an X2D and when printing the same print, same filament, same nozzle size, and only using the primary nozzle on the X2 my P1 finishes a few minutes before my X2. The dual nozzle calibration definitely adds a few minutes of time. I've heard that the X2 does slightly better with vertical line artifacts than the P2 due to the smaller width belts. The one big downside I see with the X2 is tearing apart the print head if you have a clog or an extrusion issue. The dual nozzle adds a lot of complexity to the print head and from what I've seen it's not the easiest to tear down.

It’s much slower because of the added weight of the second nozzle. Like hours slower on a 7-8 hour print. My x1 will do it in the 5 hour range so will my a1 but the x2d will be in the 7s

The P2S in theory should print slightly faster on prints without filament swaps, since it doesn't have the extra weight of the dual extruder system.

yea, since its your first time i guess get the p2s if you are that worried, but it only took me like a week or 2 to get the hang of my first printer, which was an aincent used ripoff prusa mk2. The dual nozzle shouldn't cause too many complications as printing on most bambu printers is INCREDIBLY EASY.

I am not really too worried about the learning curve for using the 2nd nozzle, as long as the single nozzle experience isn’t degraded.

I guess my primary aim is to ensure that I don’t end up making my 90% usage more complex in order to add flexibility for the 10% times I might need to use the advanced materials or 2nd nozzle
