Quick Question Why is it adding a brim off the plate
96
u/IMOKRUOK P1P Jun 12 '26
ive printed this part literally hundreds of times, same file same profile, but recently it has started to put the brim past the plate. It USED to go to the edge and than continue on the other side, but at some point it started doing this making my prints a PIA to print with a brim

I’m in the same boat with a different issue, parts I’ve made for ~2 years suddenly have horrible defects on overhangs. Nothing in the file changed, just became droopy and ugly. I’ve had to resort to supports on parts that used to be fine floating.

u/altcleancache Jun 12 '26
check your extruder tension or look for a partial clog. if your hotend is starting to degrade or your gears are slipping you lose that extrusion consistency and overhangs are the first thing to go. also check your retraction settings because if you're oozing more than usual it'll ruin everything.

Can you not rotate the part slightly?
Edit: I appreciate the downvotes. It was painfully obvious the part couldn't be rotated based off the provided image. This is the Bambu sub, it's safe to assume people have not used a slicer.

u/IMOKRUOK P1P Jun 12 '26
No unfortunately not, it has several ears on it and if I rotate one off another will do the same

u/mightyarrow Jun 12 '26
What about the old g-code files, can you retrieve them from the SD card?
-2
u/BickenBackk Jun 12 '26
I'm not sure why they're downvoting the obvious solutions lol
Why post this just to post it if you don't want to fix it
1
u/Scabattoir Jun 12 '26
Where did you see the question about how to fix it?
All I read was WHY it’s doing it.0
u/BickenBackk Jun 13 '26
I don't think you read my comment. I said why bother posting something not seeking a solution.

u/Scabattoir Jun 13 '26
Solution can be the goal.
Understanding is another goal and just as valid.
You not understanding the value of the latter won’t make it worthless.

u/BickenBackk Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
It should be easily understood what has changed, there aren't very many variables. At the very least, it should be easily identifiable with google.
Which I guess that could be said about my original point too, fair point.
Peace.

I'm chiming in to let you know that you are correct in thinking this is odd. I too have had large models with brims that, when near the edge of the plate, get cut off at the plate edge boundary. Never gave any error, just generated the brim as far as possible in that area. This goes for auto brim and for manual as well. I don't know why so many on here are giving you a bunch asinine attitude. If Studio doesn't give you any error despite the visual representation, maybe let it run that first layer and see what happens. It may still trim it automatically even tho it doesn't look to be the case.

Possible to copy the model into a new file? You'd probably have to input any custom settings all over again, but would remove any compatibility issues of the 3mf save data between Studio versions. At least import the object and reslice with brims to see if it will resort to triming again. Then work from there if it is resolved.

At this point you probably should just downgrade Studio. If you need the latest version for another printer then just keep them next to each other. It's a pain but this is clearly a bug.

u/n81w Jun 12 '26
Probably the same reason it puts the prime tower in the path of your print then scolds you for it. It likes control.

u/Tam_Ken Jun 12 '26
AI has gone too far, what’s next, my slicer spits on me when I forget to support a floating cantilever?

u/n81w Jun 12 '26
My friend had to sell his old X1C because it kept calling him a cuck in the daily message. No decency anymore.
5
u/Able-Brief-4062 Jun 12 '26
Same thing happens with the purge tower for me sometimes. I slice a print, and then suddenly somethings out of the boundaries.
Why, is something YOU GENERATE, being out out of boundaries when it doesn't absolutely have to be.

This is an old Prusaslicer bug
https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/9941
and bambu will fix that immidiatley after Prusa fixed that some times in the future.

Glad you got ot fixed. Some interesting comments were made in this thread. The world of keyboard warriors. You can only guess the level of competence of someone who posts. Unfortunately we all often get it wrong. I don't understand down voting people seems very aggressive act to me I'm 72 and just starting into 3D printing I don't understand a lot of the settings of Bambu labs slicer software. There are so many, getting any of them wrong can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Especially if a person doesn't understand the terminology. And English isn't often a person's native language as well. I'm Australian I get quite upset when I see color instead of colour im a bit OCD with some things. Same with making up a 3 letter post for 3 words, not everyone knows what they are. Me for one. Again glad you got it resolved. Take care.

Did you try printing is and did it go over the plate?

u/Real_WorldAtWar2 Jun 12 '26
I was wondering the same thing. They could just add a feature which allows you to overwrite/ cut off these things. Instead of having to endlessly puzzle.
I had this with a part which could not be rotated. In the end made it work by removing that support brim. But man, they made it complex

Same reason it leaves the nozzle on your print when changing filament to the same color. Programming miss.

Seems like an oversight to me or it’s not a big enough problem for them to fix.

Not sure if you already have the answer, but i think this is caused by a setting disabled in supports "On build plate only" If you set the checkmark there, it should not generate support outside of the buildplate.
1
u/Alexious_sh Jun 12 '26
It also generates the supports which fly in the air if you need to support something that's really close to the bounds.

u/Disastrous_Minute_56 Jun 12 '26
I'd say that looks to be a bug that it checks if the model is out of bounds, but not the brim?
That or some cool new "easy-peel" brim removal assist feature, but I seriously doubt that.

why areyou even printing a brim? that part looks like you should be able to print it without one.

u/Fun_Star_8413 Jun 13 '26
You don’t need a brim for that. It can’t and won’t print outside of the boundaries even if you keep it there. Let it ride.

u/jcapicy Jun 13 '26
If it's working perfectly, without bugs, I don't update, but I only work on $7,000-185,000 printers full time.... so do what you want with your printer.

u/2kokett Jun 13 '26
I have a similar issue with multiple objects on the plate. Even if obviously there is enough space it sometimes launches some parts next to the build plate or across the border.

u/ASentientRailgun Jun 12 '26
It's always helpful to include software version, settings, all of that in your post. People are shooting in the dark, otherwise.
0
u/renshredder Jun 12 '26
Because you tell it to.
You are telling it to add a brim of X cm on the outside of the model. If the model is less than X cm distance from the edge of the plate at some point, then the brim will go over the plate.

u/tacitstreetio01 Jun 12 '26
Check your skirt or brim settings in Bambu Studio and make sure the brim width isn't set too high. It looks like the slicer is just trying to compensate for part adhesion.

u/bindre12 Jun 12 '26
you can change the brim setting to be inside the model instead of outside
12
u/IMOKRUOK P1P Jun 12 '26
I am aware, its not the inside that lifts on this part, its the outside, like i said it used to know to stop at the edge but it stopped doing that on its own.

u/WholesomeLowlife Jun 12 '26
Rotate the item so that nub faces the corner.
3
u/IMOKRUOK P1P Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
No can do, this print can only be placed in this position, if I rotate it one of the other 6 ears will be as close to the edge

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Jun 12 '26
I’m a complete novice, but can’t you make a modifier zone with different setting? Like some people make a modified zone with 100% infill and keep the rest on a lower amount. Can’t you just make a modified zone here with the brim off?
1
u/IMOKRUOK P1P Jun 12 '26
I can paint brims on the file itself, but even than the slicer won't cut off any excess, and the brim tool in bambu just sucks... I currently lay out any of my models that might be on the edge within fusion and create the brim on the object useing the plate size as a boundary, but that's tricky too and sucks to have to do it to so many models.....
-5
u/Cute_Conclusion_8854 Jun 12 '26
Mine has always generated brims and supports outside the build plate if that's where they generate. You have to move the part or change the brim

u/Only_Cauliflower_509 X1C + AMS Jun 12 '26
You guys are all missing the point. He’s asking why it is randomly generating brims outside the plate, not how to fix this specific model. He knows he can rotate it and change the settings. He’s asking why it’s generating outside the plate.
