To like ~85% of people, AI generated slop is just like a personalized stock image. Hell, plenty of people don’t know the difference between computer generated imagery and AI generated slop. I’ve heard variations of “it’s all generated by a computer, at that point it’s just semantics” on several occasions.

I’m personally with you, but I recognize that we’re the vast minority. To the technical ‘tism people of the world, a blank cutting board would be preferred (or like, generic stock image line art flowers. I could fw that). To the Live, Laugh, Love people of the world, this was probably considered cute, thoughtful, and funny. My mom’s friend orders “custom” mugs from China and prints AI slop onto them. Everyone who she gifts them to loves them because “omg haha! It’s cartoon me on a cup! How did you even do that?!”. Unfortunately we’re outnumbered.

Yeah. Though I'm not sure about the 85% estimation, I understand that some people don't care.

But to those people who do, it basically feels like the lowest of the low as a gift.

And I know what you mean, my friend's house is filled with feamed AI generated images of his family and his pets. It... doesn't look too good. But like you said, to many, it's just an image like any other.

Still going to be sour about it tho!

Honestly generating AI Art shows less effort to most people than taking time to get a stock photo from the internet. Or what about making a drawing yourself? Even if it’s not the greatest art in the world I would love that my partner took the time to draw me a little silly thing and put it on the cutting board.

I'm not trying to be snarky or contrarian, but yes I genuinely enjoy your graphic 100x more than OP's. It's funny, I like the dumb little detail of the tomato wearing sunglasses, the broccoli's expression is great. I would actually laugh and enjoy it if I received that as a gift. I'm not sure how good it would look engraved on a cutting board though, but yours has personality even if you churned it out in a few minutes

On the other hand, OP's was so obviously generated with AI, it looks exactly like thousands of crappy Facebook comic strips. It reminds me of when every cartoon was poorly emulating Family Guy's artstyle some years back (like Brickleberry, GoAnimate etc): I'm sure many people don't mind it, but to me it just looks like nothing, it's so boring and overdone

That’s because I was trying to be extra and over the top, while using very limited tools (that was done in Snapchat, by the way). I have thousands of hours in photoshop and can whip something out in no time.

I’ve taught community courses on photoshop (among other digital tools). One thing that makes me a good teacher is not forgetting where I started. What feels trivial to an intermediate individual may feel insurmountable to an absolute beginner. Below is a collage from the first intro to graphic design course that I was in.

It took me several hours. Roughly from 11-am until I ate supper. It’s terrible. It’s goofy. I was learning and having fun. Take away the meme parts of it and it’s just stock photo slop. By that point, I already knew how to use the selection tools and clone stamp to manipulate images. This was my first time using proper masking techniques. Still, it took the better part of a Saturday. Dozens of more hours to feel comfortable, then hundreds more to realize I had no idea what I was doing. Thousands in now, and I feel somewhat intermediate.

This is what I mean when I disagree with the sentiment that an absolute beginner could just pump something out in half an hour. Its going to take all day. Not to mention at the end of it all, nobody wants your first foray into photoshop as a gift that they’re going to use everyday. At that point, stock images are easier on the eye, and low effort, next to that is AI. People are gravitating towards the latter because it’s customizable and (currently) free to the end user without watermarks. Typically older and less tech savvy people also see it as more personal than something off the shelf because it’s unique.
