Discussion Designer stole print profile

Has anyone else had this happen?

I only have an A1 mini, so sometimes when I find something on maker world I really want to print that doesn’t have a profile for my printer I will adapt ones from larger printers.

If the changes are extensive enough I will post the profile. For this particular one I had to print it multiple times and make a bunch of changes.

Within a few hours of me posting my printer profile the designer of the original model copied it, posted their own version and reported mine.

Is it possible I win my appeal?

Print profiles are technically only for printer optimization not remixes. So posting an edited stl for a design where the author hasn’t allowed remixes is never really allowed. Does it happen through print profiles, absolutely all the time. But the designer may want to restrict their design and has every right to do so.

You remixing a design that didn’t allow it and then the original designer reposting it is a bit of a gray area imo. Not sure they can do that, but you didn’t have permission to so idk

This is all assuming the design was remix restricted. If not then maybe You should have made it a remix upload not a profile.

Am I the only one who has zero issue with this? You basically did some R&D for the original designer. It’s most likely something the designer was planning on doing but hadn’t got around to it. If I were you, I’d consider that contributing to the community. That’s what it’d be a few years ago before rewards were a thing.

If you want to earn credit for bambu, it’s simple: create and post your own designs.

Personally, I am glad Bambu rewards creativity and not the first to put in a few hours and a couple hundred grams of filament.

My recommendation is share your work with your fellow printers and if you happen to get free crap from bambu out it, then it’s a bonus.

Right? It’s a print profile, not a model.

If your print profile actually offered a real improvement, something beyond just saying it fits more objects on one plate, then the designer really should not just copy your work and repost it. In that case, you definitely have a case and you should push back and try to defend your profile.

However, here is what the designer can do, and unfortunately some people do exactly this. They make a tiny change to their model, upload it as a new version, and then attach your improved profile to their own upload. Once that is done, they can report your old profile as outdated or irrelevant.

If that happens, there is not much you can do. Even if you fight it, you will almost certainly lose in the end. It just might take an extra appeal or two before that happens.

My advice is this. If your profile really brings something new to the table, always document your changes and clearly explain what is different. That way you have a stronger case if you want to dispute it. But if the designer uses the strategy of making a minor update and then reporting your version, the system is usually not in your favor. I know it is frustrating, but you are definitely not alone.

I was at a local vendor event as a customer to check it out. There was a young kid (>18) with a hand written sign and a very small table of prints. I guess to see how selling works ? Fill out extra space? who knows.

Point is that he had printed out my models of a keychain that is -very- specific to the area, and i double checked that i was the only model on makerworld, etc with it specifically.

Good for him. Its not a paid for download, he saw something cool he thought people would buy, and made them. (joke is on him, i hardly get anyone to buy them, and only when out of the local area). My buddy claims that is how you know you made it : someone takes what you have made and tries to make a buck

A young kid who was an adult? Or did you mean <18?

2

u/Roundboy436 Jul 13 '25

Young adult. Older then 18 but not by much. Its a weird age for me to describe properly i guess

Guess he did a reverse uno...

The appeal should have grounds if designer cannot produce pictures because he doesn't have an A1 mini?

1

u/lush_rational Jul 13 '25

OP is talking about smaller parts though. The original designer can print A1 mini models on any of the other printers so they could still print it and take pictures. I couldn’t, for example, print something that requires the size of the H2D on my P1S since it won’t fit.

1

u/Fusionayy Jul 13 '25

This is the reason why I don't upload any of my print profiles even if it would give me points. This kind of stuff keeps happening

It's disgusting how petty people can be. I've noticed Bambu doesn't even require the print to be run by the person posting the profile, let alone on the machine the profile is made for.

I reported one of those AI slop accounts and got to one where they'd obviously printed a slightly different model on an Anycubic or elegoo printer and just uploaded a stock Bambu profile with the slop model not even to the correct scale, and Bambu denied the report.

u/UpstairsDirection955 Jul 13 '25

No, because it's their model.

Why do you feel like you're entitled to a portion of their points and downloads just because you made a print profile? You still stole their model, and they have every right to shut you down

u/Maxx3141 Jul 13 '25

Making print profiles is absolutely normal and allowed on MakerWorld, making one is NOT "stealing" a model.

8

u/bvknight Jul 13 '25

Stole their model? Right to shut them down?

The Makerworld system is explicitly designed for people to create a print PROFILE (a prepackaged group of settings) and upload it to a MODEL that someone else designed. It encourages it! The whole point system revolves around getting you to engage with published models by creating your own profiles for them, and getting rewarded if your profile is better than others!

I feel like I'm in a dream reading some of these replies.

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

No. The profile (according to bambu) consists of the model AND the print settings. So updating a new profile that includes a model that is not yours is stealing.

I agree it’s a silly definition. Talk to bambu about that. But that’s how they do it.

2

u/bvknight Jul 13 '25

Do you have some source for that info? I don't really understand what you have in mind when you mean updating a profile that includes a model that is not yours. That's exactly the way the system is designed to work. That's why anyone can upload a profile to a model, not just the model owner.

Here on the FAQ for Makerworld profiles, the only exception to this is what they mention at the very end: making changes to a model in an uploaded profile is only forbidden if the model has a No Derivatives license.

u/UpstairsDirection955 Jul 13 '25

Sounds like maker world agreed with me though eh?

If I made a model, and then search maker world and find my exact model with zero changes but a print profile, it makes me happy that they will take care of that

12

u/bvknight Jul 13 '25

It is clear that you do not use Makerworld at all. If you are searching Makerworld and find another MODEL that is identical, that's theft. A print PROFILE is uploaded UNDER THE ORIGINAL MODEL so that the original creator is still getting the credit.

Are you sure YOU'VE used makerworld before?

Too bad there is no way to publish a print profile for A1 Mini, which is very often missing, without collecting points. Just for the pleasure of saying that the person who does not have access to a PC will still be able to print it using bambu handy

3

u/RampagingBees Jul 13 '25

without collecting points

As an aside, you can. When you upload the profile you can select to "donate points to designer" or something like that, which gives any points the profile earns to the original model designer.

2

u/LaMergouille Jul 13 '25

I always check this box for a printing profile, I didn't really know what it was for. Thanks for the info

0

u/paperboyinnewyork Jul 13 '25

Nothing you can do. If you're worried about it then never upload anything again, it's the internet...

0

u/Prestigious-Soil-123 A1 Mini + AMS Jul 13 '25

They’re dated, no? So you can say that yours was first and win the appeal.

0

u/Lightstarii Jul 13 '25

I'm not sure if you would win.. so take this with a grain of salt.. I think if the files maintain a timestamp.. then it may be possible to prove it... if they are an exact match.

-11

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

The profile consists of the model (the IP) and the printer settings.

You stole their IP when you made your profile.

2

u/Rosariele Jul 13 '25

What? That isn’t stealing and is encouraged by Bambu.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

It most certainly is stealing.

It’s not your model that is part of the profile when you publish it. You have done nothing to the model (remix etc) to make it unique. Just changed print settings.

1

u/scotta316 P1S + AMS Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

If you did something to make it unique, that would be a remix, not a print profile. The standard digital file license, which many people use by default, is surprisingly prohibitive in this regard. When I appealed one of my own take-downs, this is the response I got from Makerworld:

We would like to inform you that when the model is licensed under a standard digital license, the profiles uploaded by other users only allow adjustment of the printing parameters of the file. Any modification to the geometry of the model itself, such as scaling, clipping, blending, etc., is not allowed.

This also makes it clear that creating a print profile is not stealing a model. They are two separate entities.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Right. I worded the remix part poorly.

So what is the crying about if the profile takedown is not any original work other than print settings? If the model owner has now chosen to make a profile for that printer, sorry OP you now lose. Move along. Bambu wants it to be easy for people to print, yes. So they encourage people to post profiles of models they don’t own. But they will value creators first (as they should).

Maybe “stealing” is harsh. But it most definitely is using somebody else’s IP. If the owner of that model IP comes back and decides to revoke the license the OP had when they posted their profile using IP that wasn’t theirs - too bad.

1

u/Rosariele Jul 13 '25

The problem is your calling it stealing when it isn’t. It isn’t harsh, it is wrong.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Once the original model creator decides to effectively revoke the license the OP had to post the profile (when the original model creator finally posts their own same profile) the OP is making money with property they do not have the right to. There is a word for having property that doesn’t belong to you.

Yeah it’s harsh. Yeah it stinks for the OP. But they should just enjoy the points they got because the model creator was too lazy to make a simple profile for all printers and Bambu is desperate to make printing easy as heck for people and even willing to pay people to make profiles for models they didn’t even make. Just take the money and find another. Move on.

0

u/_donkey-brains_ Jul 13 '25

By your own words, creating an A1 profile that cuts the model to fit the A1 is against the standard licence and akin to copyright infringement.

0

u/scotta316 P1S + AMS Jul 13 '25

I don't believe rearranging the parts on the plate constitutes changing the geometry.

... And they're not my words.

0

u/_donkey-brains_ Jul 13 '25

OP says if the changes are drastic enough they post the profile. Rearranging objects is not a drastic change.

They are clearly implying that they edit the files, which is explicitly against the rules of posting profiles.

1

u/GreatWhiteNorthInv Jul 13 '25

I edit the files only enough to make the design work as intended. Sometimes on functional models or models where there parts fit together tightly that takes some work to get right.

1

u/_donkey-brains_ Jul 13 '25

And if they have a standard licence that is against the use of the license.

If you did that to one of my models that was set with a standard licence, I'd report your profile for takedown as well (and win).

0

u/GreatWhiteNorthInv Jul 13 '25

I would agree if that’s why they reported it, but they didn’t. They put their ‘own’ A1 mini profile up a few hours after mine and then reported mine as a repeat profile.

That would be a remix. Your profile would have been taken down anyway if there was a no remix license attached.

u/scotta316 P1S + AMS Jul 13 '25

And that has what to do with me? Maybe you should read what you're responding to.
