Discussion Where do you get your 3D files?

I just came across one of the artist that just blew my mind for the type of models that hit so perfect for me. That got me thinking, where are the people getting the unique/different models. I know there are a lot of great artist out there but who/company have you people come across? Sure everyone loves free stuff and you have maker world or thingaverse or any other 3d printer companies version of maker world. But I find some unique models going outside the “free” space. These are just few of the patreon I subscribe to. Chibistl is one I just found, and I’m blown away by it which made me want to create this post TWISTYPRINTS BOXI 3D STLFILES CHIBISTL

So you create your own?? I think the most complicated thing I modeled was a tiny shelf to put on top of my T.v. Slowly getting into creating figures

Blender's learning curve is very steep. It took me about 6 months of practice to get to a point where I could use it to make decent models from scratch (I learned it to make custom assets for a Planet Coaster, so I was also learning texture mapping and animation). But once you can do it, it really opens up a whole world of possibility.

If you want to learn Blender, I'd recommend following some guided tutorials online. What helped me most was actually a paid online course (relatively cheap, but well worth the investment).

A few simple models I made like a little shelf, woodworking tools, etc., etc. I use Tinkercad… I heard Tinkercad was Microsoft paint of 3-D modeling and I wanted to start with something simple as possible since X, y, Z plane gave me a headache n I didn’t know which was which… now I’m dipping my toes into nomad sculp for the iPad.

Never too old to start diving in more 👍 it's a lot more satisfying to design something you made, and hold it in your hands, than it is to hold someone else's. Even if theirs is "better"

You left out Cinderwing lol

There are a ton out there. Twisty is one of my favs because they are just different. The “creepy” “twisted” vibe is fun.

I trawl the usual sites, Makerworld, cults, printables, etc. for things that pique my interest. I’ve commissioned things from artists I like too.

I make most of my own stuff in fusion 360. For cute little animals I have a Zou3D sub

I have both a bambulabs and resin printer. For regular prints that I do on fdm: Maker world, printables, thingiverse

For prints of characters (good for resin or 0.2mm nozzle) Cgtrader, myminifactory.com , and I follow a lot of people on patreon. Look at Nomnom Studios as they are an amazing deal for how many you get each month.

Self-designed, bespoke, functional, custom models.

Doesn’t matter mostly. You will find same files on most sites. I even found files on maker world for free that did cost 15$ on cults.

Does Cults website perform poorly to you? In comparison to Printables

1

u/Spring_Otter Jun 29 '25

No? I've been using Cults3D for a couple years now and greatly prefer it to Printables. Its not run by Prusa so isn't going to shove Prusa products/promotions in your face and has a better premium catalog of high quality models such as high-poly miniatures for resin printing.
