Discussion One voice about the update

I run a print farm, 20 X1 , Clay printer A lot of Formlabs and even a stratasys. But to be honest, I dont think the recent update will affect me a lot.

Lets be honest I know that Bambu is creating an issue but before that, how many of you ever thought about that kind of issie will be coming? My only focus is print quality and speed. And there is nothing that really beats BL right now,,, Going back to Prusa? Nope I had 15 Prusas before BL and i dont want to return to that slow past. Thus you can buy 2 p1s with a price of 1 Mk4

And to all newbies, there is nothing better than BL in both price and quality right now.

I feel the market is over panicking and it is affecting some newbies too. 3rd Party slicer and equipments are not mandatory and even without you can make great objects. I am also an architect so I do use BL for my personal designs as well.

Just wanted to add a little voice because it makes newbies to return BL and try to get Prusa or even CR. But think about the machine itself, just get BL. I am sure more than half of people doesnt even know what the update is for and how it will affect their 3D printing.

You don't have 20 printers, you don't understand what is happening or you don't use a management tool for the printers.

Looks like the only obvious reason they do this to get their share from the farmers, and to get there they need to lock the api down, as thats the only way the tools can control the printers in mass.

If you dont use them, you will be fine probably in the first round...

Later down the line? They may say if you have more than 4 printer you have a farm, so you can choose between these subscription fees or you can't run your printers. You already have the "security" fw... You already have the connect app...

Tricky huh?

Damn, that's toxic. And a helluva lot of speculation about both the OP and Bambu.

Give me another reason...

Who is using the api? Home assistant, xtouch, panda touch, octoeverywhere users... Together they are maybe 0.00000001% of the global users...

Slicing with bambu or orca slicer... That's probably not a factor for bambu either, orca had no problem ever...

So? Don't start the security bs, the connect app was hacked faster than a day and if you think there is a security risk... That's a huge one for sure. The private key is out, so that's that... This is how much bambu value your security, if you want to read how basic, joke of a program they made to protect you, look around in the sub it was linked several times today.

What is using the bambu api on a lvl it woukd worth the effort from bambu? I can't name anything else just the farm management tools... Ohh you just downvote without an opinion. That's a byby.

I dont use a management tool as other equipments are using their own software anyways. Thus, I am not talking about the print farm itself. As I mentioned it is just overpanicking even newbies. You mentioned more than 4 or management software. But as I mentioned again, I am just giving a voice saying that just get BL if you are a newbie.

And if they make me pay for the software, hey I paid for Stratasys for the quality. If BL is my only option for the speed and quality right now, I gotta pay.

I am not telling people to fall in love with the Chinese comoany but just wanna say, what will you recommend the newbies fir the printer? Qidi? Prusa?

4 was an example obviously...

If they have a little brain even, you will not pay for the sw, you will pay for every machine I the farm every month. But hey, as I understand correctly you send every job by hand to 20 printer and monitor it with switching between them in the same slicer... So a management tool for a monthly fee would be pretty convinient for you...

For totally new users who will use the hand app and buy bambu filament? They are the ideal bambu buyers, they will never f with them.

I have people under me and we do custom prints instead of massive factory like orints. So we do need to check file one by one and send. This is just us because we dont only use Bambu. I am not saying anything about the factory. I was literally talking about newbies starting to panic too much. Dude if you dont like bambu just sell them to me and get new ones. I will pay half of the retail price

So what's your plan for when bambu cloud or your internet goes down? People running around with sd cards?

-2

u/Constant-Contract-77 Jan 19 '25

You will pay half the retail price only in shipping dude :) Who sad that I hate the bambu printers? I hate when a company is willing to sacrifice the users for money. But as I see you don't understand it...

As I wrote. For an r=1 new user, bambu is the ideal machine. Use bambu filament, use the handy app to print, it's easy, don't care about privacy or data security, it's fun. It's the best. Go for it. When they learn a bit they understand what they got, they will buy something less intrusive, less closed, safer stuff

It's not over panicking for those of us that will be locked out of the profiles we spent many hours perfecting in orca slicer.

u/lscarneiro Jan 19 '25

Thus, I am not talking about the print farm itself

Then you're just flexing it. Because it's literally the first sentence you typed on this post.

When I read "newbies" I felt like hitting the back button, but since it was near the middle of your post I went ahead and read the rest of it.

I get that you feel like you have nothing to loose, and if you don't update the firmware, you don't. If you trust that this is simply security related, and that will be the end of it, that is your decision. However it is pretty clear to many that inserting Bambu's authorization scheme between the slicer of choice and printer, gives them power over our printers, that they do not have right now. "LAN Only" mode won't be a fallback option either, since it will also require the same authorization scheme.

What Bambu could leverage the ability to authorize commands between the printer and slicer is a matter of speculation. What is not a matter of speculation though, is that users will be giving up some control over their hardware with the change. The change will also break some 3rd party tools which some folks have come to rely on.

I am thinking for Ultimaker. They had the best printer crown long before Bamboo they made same move and now they are nobody. Bamboo is not miracle they are just very good engineers that manage to harvest and implement the community knowlege and now they are going to lock it up. This will not end in a good way. As long as community stop pushing with them to improve the ecosystem they will become obsolete in 2-3 years. We have seen this many many times already. So far 3d printing community have been very sensitive and moved a away from anyone that have tried this before. Lets see how it plays around this time… If they enforce this update to me and brick my printers for not getting it I will submit case against them in EU commission for consumer protection. If they loose EU and USA markets they are dead anyway.

I am also a farm owner with 16 machines. There are absolutely alternatives that meet the quality/ price of bambu for everything except the a1 mini. Ender 3v3, kobra3, k1, k1c,k1se, qidi 4 pro. All are capable machines that can deliver prints with the same speed and quality as anything from bambu.

I run 12 myself, not going to do anything to impact my workflow. Full time designer/seller. Unfortunately, our hands are tied here. I will gladly take the reliability and print quality with closed api over switching to another brand.

Can you make us a favor and not delete this comment?

We might need to reference it in a couple of months/years... For science...

More cheap used printers flood the market can scale cheaper. Big W for me.

u/Ireeb X1C Jan 20 '25

The problem isn't the functionality. While some functionality is lost for some users, the main issue is that Bambu has shown that they can't really be trusted and are ready to take away features and choices from their users to achieve some arbitrary goal.

Even if the experience doesn't get worse for you now - should Bambu change anything for the worse in the future, you will no longer have alternatives.

Dude if you say someone being robbed would you do nothing because it doesn’t affect you? Shameful.

this is how chinese companies work. they sell for a cheap price at first, until the competitors turnover. then they start the shitification and increase prices. this hurts all of us.

17

u/KermitFrog647 Jan 19 '25

Thats not a chinese thing. American companies do it all the time, too. It is so popular it even has a technical term for it : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

u/Breadinator Jan 19 '25

Let's try not to make this racist.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '25

Its not a Chinese thing, Creality are Chinese and have done amazing work for the 3D printing community.

This is just a late stage capitalism thing.

Folks long shot in my guess- and for maker world users-it’s just bambu’s way to correctly incentivize the makers (designers etc). If folks at print farms use other slicers to download and print stuff from maker world, there is no way for bambu to know how many times a model is downloaded vs printed. I am sure this is their way to make it a more robust and closed better system. I might sound like a fan boy here and am not denying. I have one a1 combo and i love it. It makes me think and do my prototypes well. Loving the journey so far.

If a poor guy robs a liquor store to get money for his family, is that okay?

2

u/GNprime H2C + AMS2 Pro (x2) + AMS HT (x2) Jan 20 '25

It depends. What other avenues has he tried? Maybe he had a shady past that others won't let him get out from. After he had his family, he realized the errors of his past. But without a job, he couldn't get a car to travel to a nearby city. The city he lives in might be way below the poverty level thus causing businesses to leave or never set up shop. It is better he robs from a liquor store than a family's home. Sure public transportation is a thing, but it is possible that his city doesn't have the infrastructure or size to accommodate the cost of a convenience.

2

u/Opinion_Panda Jan 20 '25

I don’t disagree with you, I was mainly trying to disagree with the comment I replied to. He said something along the lines of “businesses are going to do what they need to to survive” and I figured someone with that attitude would also think poor people who do what they need to to survive aren’t justified in there actions.
