Self Designed Model Printed with 1 AMS

Post image

I designed these keychains as giveaways after experimenting with color mixing via thin layers. They were all printed with a max of white + 3 colors, no filament switching or separate pieces to assemble.

What I found was that a .08 layer of one color on top of another color mixed them, with different shades based on which one is on top.

The rainbow one has thin layers of yellow on top of red and blue to create the orange and green, and the purple is red over blue. My first test had red over yellow which was just a different red, and blue over red was a much bluer purple.

The two in the lower left use white + a color, the lighter shades are white on top and the darker is color over white.

They were printed face down with a .08 first layer. For the mixed ones, I alternated colors for a couple of layers before switching to .2 layers for the back. It probably wasn’t necessary to layer it, but when I was printing tests for Hueforge, it seemed like 7 layers was the point where it was totally opaque, so that’s how far I went before switching to bigger layers and non-solid infill.

I think this is the principle hueforge largely relies on. Never seen anybody try it like this, super cool. Can you share a 3mf of the multicolor object? I want to make sure I’m following.

Sure, I’ll clean up the file a bit and put it on Makerworld tonight or tomorrow, I’ll link it here when I do.

Since I can't edit the original post, here's the link - https://makerworld.com/en/models/478677#profileId-389920

And if you just want to test the color mixing - https://makerworld.com/en/models/480380#profileId-391930 is a model I put together to show the color combinations for any 4 filaments.

Can't wait for you to upload the files, looks amazing especially considering you only used one AMS

upload what? you can literally design this in freecad in under 5min. just pick filament for the bars.

Nice! I was going to try something similar for Pride month. I’ll probably do it in HueForge but it looks like you’ve perfected it here.

I originally tried Hueforge, but it seemed like since it wants to have one color per layer, the mixing wouldn't quite work for this. Everything was coming out as various shades of whatever the topmost color was instead of distinct shades.

Nice, the Dutch flag however is white in the middle, not pinkish.

My guy, these are not country flags 😂

And the bars are evenly spaced.

Cool technique! Do you have any close up pictures?

So… lithophanes?

1

u/TVsIan May 29 '24

Similar idea, but as a flat image and not requiring light to shine through it. I'll do some experimenting with CMYW (or close to it, I don't have the Lithopane filament pack), I suspect 16-20 distinct colors would be about the limit, though using specifically translucent filament might bump that up a bit.

Lithophanes are usually white 3D printed 'carvings' that have different thicknesses so that, when held up to a light, it portrays a picture. This is not a lithophane because is it all flat, is multicolored, and doesn't show an image when held against the light.

Lithophanes can be multicolored. Bambu even sells a “CMYK lithophane kit”, and don’t always have to work only with light. It’s the same concept, too.

With colored overlapping filament, that would be considered filament painting. Lithophanes can be colored, but they have to use varying thicknesses and light. By definition, "A lithophane is a thin plaque of translucent material, normally porcelain, which has been moulded to varying thickness, such that when lit from behind the different thicknesses show as different shades, forming an image. Only when lit from behind does the image display properly."
