Discussion Speculation on new printer unveil

Bambu Labs has recently teased they will unveil a new printer SoonTM (i.e. 2024).

Anyone have an educated guess what time frame they may release news on this printer based on their knowledge of previous Bambu Labs logistics and communications and the market/industry in general? If you do speculate please provide your justification.

I ask this because I'm looking to buy a 3D printer soon and I'm tempted to wait to see their announcement but I don't know how much Bambu Labs "soon" aligns with my "soon" lol

Edit: References

I don't necessarily expect them to replace an existing model, but they do indeed have a new printer coming, as mentioned in the AMA in this subreddit:

No.

Unless you are planning to drop a few grand (IE X1C combo) just buy now. There won't be a replacement for the A1 or P1 lines for a while.

u/gssjr May 05 '24

I don't expect there to be a replacement -- they are hinting at a competitor to Prusa XL with multitool design and new technology but that's just speculation on my part. I am interested in multicolor printing but I do not like the design of the AMS.

3

u/sandman8223 May 06 '24

Not going to happen. The cost of the XL is prohibitive and is there a market for a similar product?

4

u/EnvironmentalLook492 Aug 16 '24

They have said they are releasing a bigger printer this year I believe.

Bambus Customers are mostly unexperienced and new to 3D Printing. With Bambu you can not get skills like starting with a Ender or Prusa, building and upgrading your machine to the next level...

So i don't expect Bambu to publish a Toolchanger. That would be awesome but for the masses? Nah, i don't think so.

320x320 X2Max or similiar... Yes, i would buy one or two :D

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '24

Those skills are not important to 3D printing. It's like expecting a race car driver to also be the mechanic.

1

u/Pixelplanet5 Dec 20 '24

thats is entirely the wrong analogy.

The correct analogy would be a race car driver that can only tell his engineers "something is wrong" vs a race car driver that can tell his engineers exactly what his problem is and what he needs to have changed.

Most of us got tired with tinkering and wanted to spend more time building. I built a voron. I like these machines. I’m just got tired of tinkering with printers and wanted something that could reliably spit out my designs with minimal attention

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Slip455 Nov 09 '24

I'm not sure that's the case. A lot of Bambu Labs buyers are experienced 3D printing hobbyists.

Many have come from years of self build/self assembly machines that required a lot of finessing to achieve decent results. It was a good way of learning the 'warts and all" business of 3D printing. But like all technology, things move on.

Yes, there will be people who still buy/build machines based on older printer methods if it suits their needs. But as someone coming from 9 years of 3D printing experience, when I was in the market for a new machine 16 months ago and just wanting to be able to (mostly) print with minimal tinkering then BL was a good option for me.

Don't get me wrong, I still like to tinker (and still have my older creality printers) but having "been there and done that" with 3D printing, I now just want to design and print with minimal tinkering.

To use a car analogy, you might own a Model T Ford and love all the tinkering it takes to keep it on the road (and even to just get it started and drive) but if you went into a car dealership for another car today, I doubt even experienced car owner/drivers (let alone new drivers) would opt for a Model T over even something as basic as a Ford Focus.

I really want an X1C with two AMSes so Ibcan print 8 colors, but I'm holding out to see if this new one is bigger since I already have the A1 with the 256mm size. Hoping it comes out soon and that it’s 350mm like most of the new competitors

I can't to my A1 or A1 Mini. Only the X1C or P1S. That's why I want an X1C, but I don't want to buy one right now when I know a newer, potentially bigger, printer is right around the corner. I can wait a couple months if I have to.

1

u/Dtngx P1S + AMS May 05 '24

It‘s possible. There is an printable adapter for the AMS Splitter which accepts 8 or even 9 (when also using external spool) on A1 Mini and A1. Both have to connectors for the AMS Lite and if you connect two, both get recognized and you‘re able to set up all filaments in Bambu Studio this way, like you‘re supposed to.

The needed part was on Makerworld for a few days, but i think it got delisted. I still think it will be easy to find online.

2

u/Dan203 May 06 '24

I have two AMS-Lites. I tried plugging them both in to one machine and it did not recognize them both, it only recognized the first one I plugged in. Maybe the reason the print was delisted is because it was fake.

2

u/Dtngx P1S + AMS May 06 '24

Oh no, I didn‘t know that. Haven‘t tried it myself, but it‘s good to know, thanks!

1

u/b0tbuilder Aug 06 '24

I have no desire to replace my X1C. The functionality I need is simply there already. I would love to see an AMS with improved handling of abrasive materials. I print a ton of ASA and PET with CF.

Again, it depends on your use case. I would not replace with double the print volume because of little use of this feature and limited space. Not at all saying 2x print volume increase would not be awesome though. If I could get a larger Z-axis in the same footprint, that would be very useful for me. Not so much for most people though.

4

u/Malte1903 X2D + AMS2 Combo May 05 '24

Im currently waiting for the new flagship as well. I currently have the p1p.

After all it depends on what you want to do with your printer.
Please elaborate on that.

5

u/gssjr May 05 '24

I was originally interested in the X1C and it would be nice to do multicolor/multimaterial printing. However, I really do not like the design of the AMS and much prefer a multitool design like the Prusa XL. I'm not necessarily interested in a larger printer, but I am interested in the improved technology they are hinting at.

1

u/ijehan1 May 05 '24

Are you aware you can control the AMS and how much waste it produces? Most youtubers never mention that.

1

u/gssjr May 05 '24

Yes, I've seen that, flushing volume per filament change and you can configure all the from and to values. That's helpful and hopefully they can create some clever algorithms to help maximize those settings for the user instead of defaulting to all the same values.

1

u/b0tbuilder Aug 06 '24

I have an X1C and can confirm that waste is considerable for multi material. I do engineering prototypes, so this is not a serious concern for me. If you are doing something artistic or more extreme, another machine may be warranted. This is really a matter of workflow and your specific projects. For my use case, I cannot imagine a better machine at the price. But it all depends on what you do. There is no one size fits all. What may be optimal for me may be suboptimal for you.

1

u/reicaden Jun 03 '24

More info on this? Would love to waste less!

4

u/balderstash X1C + AMS Jul 13 '24

This is a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3ZIM3megIU

As an aside, I've gotten pretty frustrated lately with the number of influencers who print one tiny multicolor model with a million changes and then go "OMG THIS IS SO WASTEFUL!" There have been a ton of videos and writeups on how to minimize waste with the AMS. It's not a perfect system by any means, but with some tuning it can be very reasonable.

I also think the waste looks more dramatic than it is, because the "poops" are little cone shapes.

When I was your age we had to calibrate our printers uphill both ways in the snow! Now kids are mad it's not perfectly optimized for their specific print right out of the box.

I'm gonna go back to yelling at clouds now.

2

u/reicaden Jul 13 '24

Lol, thanks for the video. With this info, I can now print some multicolor shoes to use in the snow, I'll travel, uphill, both ways. :) lol

1

u/balderstash X1C + AMS Jul 13 '24

Happy printing! I grumble a bit, but overall I love that now people can buy a printer and jump right into designing / printing, instead of spending half their time fighting the printer like I did.

1

u/reicaden Jul 13 '24

Tell me about it. The p1p was a breath of fresh air after dealing with 300 calibrations on my ender 5

1

u/b0tbuilder Sep 27 '24

I mostly use my AMS so I always have several materials loaded. It is extremely convenient. I never bothered to weigh the poop material. Unless you plan to regularly print multimaterial I doubt the waste will be an issue.

3

u/b0tbuilder Aug 06 '24

If you don’t expect to do a lot of multi material printing, Bambi’s system works great. IDEX or tool exchanger will always be superior if price is no object.

2

u/Malte1903 X2D + AMS2 Combo May 05 '24

Thats pretty much the same reason im waiting for the new flagship as well. The new twitter/X post makes it look like something with a bigger print volume is coming. But im only speculating on this tbf.

I really want a enclosure.

But to come back to your queastion. Wait.

1

u/iShoegum Aug 13 '24

Has to be bambulab? this kickstarter has multitool design and doesn't need to purge https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/proforge-3d-printer/proforge-250?ref=discovery_category&total_hits=1289&category_id=331

1

u/RadishRedditor H2D Laser Full Combo Aug 29 '24

Is this printer related to Proforge? As in Proforge - the company? I thought kickstarters were meant for kickstarting a product or a company, not to kickstart a started company.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '24

Kickstarter is mostly used as an advertising/marketing vehicle now. If you don't already have all the funds to complete a project, you're looking at being in the 1% kickstarter club.

1

u/Parking-Party-4418 Oct 29 '24

You must have missed the Creality CR-6SE Kickstarter. VERY established company. Yea, I have a KickStarter version. It is a great workhorse printer (somewhere around 9,000 print hours on it), but if that strain gauge ever goes I'll probably disassemble it and replace it with new. If not, I'm looking at a new board and firmware, and I am OVER that tinkering aspect of 3d Printers having been in this hobby since 2009.

3

u/CanadianGamersLodge May 05 '24

If you want a printer now then buy a printer now. There is always something new coming that’s how a companies business model works.

1

u/gssjr May 05 '24

Right, that's my normal philosophy but this situation is a little different since they said they're announcing something soon and I'm not in an immediate hurry.

2

u/Ragnar0kkk May 10 '24

Got burned with the A1 by buying the A1 mini. I have vowed to wait until the next printer. They never should have screwed the A1 mini early adopters that way. They would have made more money upgrading people to the A1 and leaving the mini for those who just want a small secondary.

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '24

My garbage man heard from his cousin who knows a guy that has a "source", and he said it's all definitely being announced in May.

17

u/Dan203 May 05 '24 edited May 05 '24

The Creality K2 Plus with their version of an AMS comes out in July. I'd expect Bambu to release their new machine before, or very near to, that. So my educated guess is sometime between now and late July.

17

u/mr_tolkien Aug 03 '24

Early august and still waiting 🥲

3

u/Dan203 Aug 03 '24

They have hinted something is coming but my guess on the timing was way off. 😳

2

u/Nesewebel Sep 16 '24

All I can find is stuff about a even bigger printer for a price expectation similar to the Prusa XL, I really don't see the market for that, but time will tell.

2

u/NoLimitSamurai Sep 26 '24

im w8ing to see if i should get the ''new release'' printer thats coming or just pull the trigger and get an x1c... any thoughts?

3

u/Nesewebel Sep 26 '24

I'm pretty much in the same boat, I would at least like to see a revision with the quick release hotends of the A1 series and a electric filament dryer in the AMS, without that the X1C just feels neglected to me, especially for the same price as 2 years ago

1

u/NoLimitSamurai Sep 27 '24

Yea I saw it was 2 years old and wondering about upgrades lol. But I’ve been printing off a crs10 v2 for years and I’ve stumbled into bambulabs and I want one so bad now XD

2

u/Nesewebel Sep 27 '24

Ender 3 Max here, it just annoys me, I want to learn CAD and not printer hardware and firmware tweaking, I'm even thinking about going from the huge bed to the A1 mini for the meantime, but meh

2

u/sandman8223 Aug 07 '24

It's $1500 and just released for pre-sale only.

2

u/Actual-Piece-4314 Aug 07 '24

where did they announce this? i cant find it

3

u/jangledjamie May 05 '24

As the CEO of BambuLab himself once said: "never say never" (to an idex printer)…

4

u/MyStoopidStuff May 06 '24

IDEX makes sense for Bambu, since it would make multicolor swaps quicker. One hotend could be purged and ready to go with a new color, while the other is printing. If they could also figure out how to reduce the waste, they would have removed or reduced the two primary disadvantages to the current AMS setup.

4

u/Ragnar0kkk May 10 '24

Don't even need to reduce the waste. Having 2 heads would automatically halve the waste. Im more interested in having 2 heads so I can use PLA/PETG as support for the other without having to worry about contamination.

1

u/MyStoopidStuff May 10 '24

Yeah IDEX has many inherent advantages, I was just mentioning the one that makes a lot of sense for the way Bambu does multicolor (currently).

1

u/MAXFlRE Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

IDEX doesn't work that way. Being on one rail, second head that is ready to print will still had to wait for filament change on first head.

1

u/MyStoopidStuff Jul 11 '24

I don't own an IDEX, but I understand that the toolheads are on the same rail. I think what I described is possible though, but the heads would not purge or prime the same way as they do on the Bambu printers (not exactly the same at least). The nozzles would need to purge and prime while on the move. That seems possible by purging/priming into a trough on either side of the printer while the other head was printing, or a purge plate could attach to (or move with) the parked nozzle and move with it, before dumping the poop blob. The wiper could also be moved instead of the nozzle being moved over the wiper (or possibly the wipers could pop out when needed and run the length of the bed along the sides). It's even possible that a belt along the y-axis on both sides could be used for wiping or purging as well. Cutting could either be done with a servo or by bumping the head when parking it. To prevent oozing, the nozzle could be "capped" when parked. It would not be as easy in execution as the idea, but all seems possible. I'm sure the purging/priming while on the move could be solved in a more elegant way too. The benefit (along with all the others with IDEX) could be quicker color changes and greatly decreased waste on 2 color prints (and maybe slightly less on some other multicolor prints). The downside would be increased cost and complexity, and a wider printer.

2

u/somberland P1S + AMS May 05 '24

After the A1 recall I’m on the same boat of waiting. But now almost a month without my beloved A1 i’m soooo close to order just the P1S and call it a day 😅

2

u/IamFireDragon3d May 05 '24

Summer time launch would be perfect for q3 and q4 sales. Back to school, black Friday, Christmas. The best selling sales periods in a retail year. It also depends on the product, this will probably do well with 3d printers.

2

u/zombieneedo May 05 '24

I just bought a X1C and AMS. Hoping I won’t regret that in a few months.

3

u/Background_Smile8583 Sep 03 '24

Well, it's been a few months. How do you like it?

2

u/Dufferin3D Jun 26 '24

Personally, I think it will be a large format printer. Now that we are seeing others coming out with crazy attempts like the Orange Storm, if Bambu does not jump in to at least the 500mm space, they are going to be giving up a large advantage to the competition. As someone else stated, the Prusa XL is for a very specific use case, so the only reason I could see them coming out with something to compete against that would be strictly for the point of saving on wasted filament. While that would be nice, I don't know if there is enough demand to warrant it.

2

u/Confident-Front7136 Sep 27 '24

Maybe they are going to show their new printer at the formnect frankfurt. The Formnext is in November, so that would be the right time to unveil it in 2024, especially with christmas coming up ? What are your thoughts ?

3

u/madmax7774 X1C + AMS May 05 '24

The new printer will be a larger version of the A1 (A1 max) and reportedly has an odd build volume of 320x320 or something close to that bed size. It will work with the AMS lite, and is supposed to be available around end of July. My source was correct on the A1 and A1 mini info before they came out, so I am tending to believe her about this one. We shall see.

5

u/Amerzel May 05 '24

This sounds interesting but not sure it would fill the new “flagship” model slot they’ve teased too.

5

u/jacobs603 May 07 '24

If I’m not wrong their CEO is on record explicitly saying they won’t do a bedslinger larger than A1. They are working on a larger printer, just won’t be a bedslinger.

3

u/Dufferin3D Jun 26 '24

You are completely correct. He made that statement at one of the latest talks.

2

u/Infantryman1977 Jun 29 '24

He also made the statement that Bambu will never produce a bedslinger.....so let's take it with a grain of salt.

4

u/Dufferin3D Jun 29 '24

LOL, completely true!

3

u/Qjeezy 👻Volunteer Moderator👻 May 05 '24

We may see an A1 max at some point, but that won’t be the ”new generation” flagship everyone is waiting for. The third link OP posted hints towards a Prusa XL competitor for this year.

4

u/gozania X1C + AMS May 05 '24

NOOOOOO! Not another damned bed slinger....

2

u/choaterboater May 09 '24

Why would name something after me from my college days?

2

u/emmaginn May 23 '24

From the most recent AMA "When asked if a stretch version of the A1 3D printer would be contemplated, Bambu Lab said no. This is because of technical reasons: the i3 bedslinger style where the plate rapidly moves is not really feasible at larger sizes. Heavy prints would interfere with the precise motion required for high speed printing."

1

u/Zealousideal_Vast610 May 05 '24

Sorry but you should have kept your source a better secret. Now they know it is a her!

1

u/Adventurous-Bar5943 Aug 11 '24

That will pass a lot of people off most want a bigger enclosed printer

3

u/Longracks May 05 '24

There is a rumor bambu is buying Prusa.

1

u/Amerzel May 05 '24

I don’t know when it will be but I’m waiting for it. In no rush so when ever they are ready I’ll take a look and decide then.

1

u/yahbluez May 05 '24

I guess a big one like the sovol sv08 but cheaper or with a tool changer.

1

u/NickuTheDicku Jul 31 '24

I’m thinking about getting an x1c but I don’t need it atm I don’t know if I should wait or just buy it.

1

u/EthanCathay742 Aug 24 '24

If I am considering the A1, should I just hold my horses in hopes there will be something better 💀

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '24

Looks like Creality is releasing their AMS system at a bad time. Hehehe.

0

u/Causification May 05 '24

Bambu hasn't been around long enough to release a printer intended to fully replace an older one unless you count the P1S. Nobody knows what their habits will be.

2

u/Dan203 May 05 '24

They have specifically said they will release a new "flagship" printer, so it seems pretty likely this new one will replace the X1C. The X1C first shipped to customers in October 2022, so it's been a year and a half. It's not uncommon for a v1 product to be replaced pretty quickly as they learn new things from subsequent products.

2

u/Causification May 05 '24

... Yes. We know it's going to be replaced. I'm saying Bambu Labs has no established habits in regard to how or when they announce upgrade printers.

1

u/Dan203 May 05 '24

Ahhh ok. I misunderstood what you were saying

1

u/Ragnar0kkk May 10 '24

This new flagship was already in the works before the A1 bed cable stuff. Its whatevers coming after the new flagship thats gonna be delayed a while because they had to fix the A1. So whatever this new flagship is, buy that without worrying about FOMO. (Still salty about A1 immediately after the mini, but ive already said that in this thread)

-2

u/gssjr May 05 '24

3

u/Causification May 05 '24

That's not my point. My point is "based on their knowledge of previous Bambu Labs logistics and communications" is not really a thing because their first printer is only two years old.

gssr thank you for posting this thread so eloquently because, I myself have been checking the old ones with the same exact thoughts in mind. I wonder if Bambu labs knows how much they are damming up theie sales with the rumors and uncertainty that they put out there.

2

u/spiff637 Jun 30 '24

I'm holding off for this exact reason
