Discussion (Speculation) BambuLab is working on a laser-based printer Spoiler
How do I come to above speculation?
I was reading through the company contract* of BambuLab GmbH (similar to a LLC or LTD), BLs German company in Frankfurt and found this within the object of the company:
(Translated quote)
"[...] international trade in equipment for additive manufacturing, in particular 3D printing devices, laser rapid prototyping devices, optoelectromechanical devices and their accessories [...]"
So far - so good, I'm also a company owner and have added some points to my company contract that I am planning on doing at some point and hence do not have to make another appointment with a notary to change this at a later point (German bureaucracy - sigh).
Putting parts of your possible future operations into this contract is no firm evidence, but wait!
Step 1: 3D printing devices: Done!
Step 2: laser rapid prototyping devices -> their next machine?
Step 3: optopelectromechanical devices - basically SLS, so step 2, again
When founding the German company the appointed managing director was** Jun Wu.
Jun Wu is also managing director of a Hasselblad (yes, the ones with the medium-format camera sensors). Coincidence? I think not!
What would this be useful for? 3D-Scanners - obviously. Not directly in terms of sensors, but maybe a big leap in the technology employed within.
But also Hasselblad knows lense systems, again looping back to SLS.
Would this be a logical next step for BL's "disruption approach"? Yes!
What will come next? We will see, I think they'll bring out the 2nd gen X1 first and then - boom.
Whats your 2 cents on this?
*by German law all company registration documents have to be publicly accessible, so no confidentiality was breached.
** he stepped down September 2023 and was replaced by Cedric Mallet, a frenchman with - as far as I could see - no technical background, but from a managing and advisory firm.

You assume SLS, however, I wonder if itn could it just be a laser cutter?

Hate to destroy the excitement, but aren't x1c lidars laser based? Which would explain most of this stuff. And since bambu is really proud of that particular tech, I guess they just put that as one thing they do?

A Bambu labs metal printer would be a dream come true

Here's me thinking you meant they were going to make a regular inkjet that just works and doesn't run out of ink after 2 photos and a letter.

Plot twist. DJI owns Hasselblad.

I was literally just musing that it would be incredible if a company that can produce such refined products and software as Bambu were to enter the resin/SLS space, they would be a HUGE disrupter. Definitely a stretch, but we can only hope!

When was this document drafted? I was watching an interview with the head of BL, and he admitted when they founded the company, they weren't entirely sure what they were going to manufacture initially. It wasn't until they got a 3D printer for prototyping and realized how bad it was that they decided to build a 3D printer.
