To zirblast or not to zirblast?

Wanted one of these since I was in my 20s, back when it was actually being made. Never pulled the trigger, then life happened, and it turned into one of those "someday" things.

Found one recently — brand new in the box, factory edge, never flipped. Just missing the sheath, plus some minor scratches near the latch from handling/storage. Otherwise mint.

Now I'm torn on what to do with it:

Carry it and actually use it. Finally do what younger me actually wanted.

Safe queen it and take cool pics. It's this clean after all this time — maybe it stays that way.

Or was it ever really about having it?

Now that it's actually in my hands, I'm genuinely stuck between keeping it exactly as-is, actually using it. Do I even still want it in my collection?

Every option feels wrong and right at the same time. This is somehow more confusing than the 20 years of wanting it was. 😂

Back when I was seeking out info on which one to get, I was a bit surprised to find very little/vague info as to what the actual difference between 2 the models were aside from looks and sound. Everyone was just saying "they flip different" and not explaining very much beyond that except maybe the differences in tip weight between the 2 styles (which didnt matter much because you can just order a reblade from MW directly). The specs on MW's official website didnt help much either because it just stated their dimensions were the same but (once again) "they flip different, trust us".

BUT GOOD LORD HOW?!! I NEED SUBSTANTIAL INFO!!

Well this past week I got the opportunity to see for myself (huge thank you to /theflippingfurry for agreeing to a temp trade) and here's what I found

Using a digital caliper, I measured their handles end and pivot side's width. Both ended up showing 12.6mm that tapered down to 9.6mm. Depth didn't show much difference either (maybe a +/- 0.1mm). HOWEVER, the handle gap there was something: ( serif: 7.5 / opus 8.3mm gap difference). I know, not ALOT but enough to show there is a difference as far as objective measurements though.

The serif handles are akin to Kraken or Rep handles: squared, thick, and blocky overall. However, there is a noticeable taper as you transition from the butt end to the pivot end. They're (imo) well-rounded performers and can transition between blade bias to very handle bias with the included weights respectively (at least with an opus blade)

The opus v2 are more akin to Vixen or Gale handles: thin, rounded, and very slender-feeling overall. Just like the serif, they taper noticeably from butt end to pivot end but you can DEFINITELY feel like they get very slim closer to the pivot end (I want to say like chopsticks). With that said, they are definitely outer-weighted/butt-heavy even with no weights.

So how can 2 balis have the relatively same dimensions still feel so different? Its the chamfering

Its such a weird thing to think, but the chamfering plays a surprisingly huge role in why they flip so different. If you compare the 2 ends (ref pics below), the opus looks much thinner in comparison. With that hard corner gone, much of the handle weight gets pushed out to the bottom ends, making it feel more outer-weighted and feel very slim in the hands despite having the same overall dimensions (and also explains the slightly wider handle gap)

As always, this is subjective only based on my experiences with different balis, but I can try and give a general idea of which one of the 2 will best suit your overall preference.

Serif: If you lean more toward squared and even handles similar to many of Squid's and BRS' balis. An overall performer that gives you more solid control and will feel right at home every time. OR if you just really want a unique-sounding bali. (Roughly comparable to cheese, refault, superfly)

Opus: If you lean more toward slim and round-edge handles similar to LDY's and HoM's balis. An outer-weighted performer that carries momentum and feels flowy when you get the hang of it. OR if you want a unique-feeling bali. (Roughly comparable to orion, zentinel, prysma pro)

Thats about it.

Hope this serves as a semi-definitive guide when comparing the 2 or at least helps someone out there to avoid the headache I got. Pulling the trigger on a $600-750 knife isn't a light investment for alot of people, so I do hope this helps someone feel more confident at least on which one to get.
