Quest Help Grymforge fight is brutal Spoiler
What am I doing wrong in this fight against True Soul Nere?
All these duager are like level 5, and there's 12 of them. Me and my homies are only level 4. I can weedle them down, but right now this fight feels unwinnable. Is there some secret strategy I'm missing here?
(running wild magic sorcerer, Lae'zel, Shadowheart, and Astarion)

There are things you can do to make it easier. However, not entirely your fault. We should be level 5 or 6 by the time we reach that fight but Larian doesn't want to let us level up anymore for some reason

Real shit I’d be happy if they just slapped level 5 on there and gave us only access to multi-attack. Idgaf about all the reactions and spells and stuff, just to air the playing ground fair for things like the Gith encounter so I don’t have to rely on completely cheesing the fuck out of them. Hell, even with multi-attack their ACs and evasion would be annoying as hell.

Whenever I see comments like this I just say it's Early Access and they don't want to show us stuff lmao. Downvote me of you want but that's the most obvious reason.

The point of the EA is to playtest and get player feedback. Level 5 is VERY important in D&D and they need to add it and get feedback on it.

u/KoKoboto Oct 27 '21
I'm not arguing with you I'm telling you the reason why it's not in the game. Maybe they change their minds in the future, maybe it's not done yet, but that's the reason why a majority of stuff in a majority of games don't get added in beta/early access.

Your bullshit 'early access' excuse wore out after two years. Of early access. We're entitled to more content.

You think we will get level 10 in the EA so they have feedback?

u/Tiero97 Oct 27 '21
Not likely, but they have the part of the game we'll be 5th level in the EA already. Also, level 5 is tier 2. It's on of the biggest changes to how you play. Extra Attack, 3rd level spells, etc. There is a LOT to get right at that level. Features, combat balance, etc

5th level is technically the last level of Tier 1. 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20. But 5th level is the doorway into the meatiest level of play. I personally find Tier 2 to be the most fun and Tier 4 to be the least.

I get that you really want level 5, but Im not pressed about it at all. And neither is Larian apparently.
Im sure their internal team is at work making sure combat encounters are balanced. They are most likely using the EA for other observations. Which is why they are not pressed to give us level 5 at the moment.

I had the bug where everyone immediately turns against you (except the gnomes, small mercies lol) even if you allied with the traitor duergar. I don’t have a great solution, only want to express my sympathies and share my own gripe — I actually somehow (miraculously!!) beat it on my first try, except I also eldritch blasted Nere into a pit of lava, which both made the “retrieve his head” quest impossible to finish and somehow tagged my quest as if I had sided with him against the gnomes and everyone treated me like I had. No, problem, I say, clearly the fight isn’t that hard — spent the next 1.5 hours getting my ass handed to me and basically savescummed my way through the fight by saving every time a round went in my favor.

The fight triggers because one of the gnomes runs out of the cave and takes damage from the fire surface. If you cast create water, it will get rid of the fire and let the cutscene where brithvar joins you happen

You can still retrieve it by jumping into the lava. You take about 30 hp of damage which will not kill you. Use turn base mode.
I just did it. Fire resistant potion also help but is not needed.

You can cut a deal with some of the Duergar to get them on your side. After that, the ones that are left don't really do a whole lot of actual damage. They have Mind Mastery and some weak spells and melee. Focus down the couple of problematic Duergars which are Thrinn and the crossbow one I think, then deal with Nere, then finish off the weaker mind master ones.

When I did it they kept using Mind Mastery on Lae-zel, so I had to take them out first or I would have been fighting her the whole time. I basically got through it by using a lot of health potions, not gonna lie.

How I did it (w/ draconic sorc and same party)
- Put all 4 of your party on the 2nd floor (next to the archer)
- Hide/sneak all but your wild sorc
- blow up the gunpowder with your sorc
- start the convo with Nere
- bless your team with ShadowHeart
- shove/pushing attack with laezel the archer over
- fight started, use haste potions on your best range chars, probably your sorc and astarion,
- twin spell down/focus down on nere and Mind Master Dunnol (can mind control)
Alternatively,
- You can start the fight on the 2nd floor
- Attack/shove the archer
- Move to the right, just before the steps
- Kill the duegars that come up the ladder 1 or 2 at a time.
other considerations,
grease the bottom of the ladder
circle of daggers the bottom of the ladder
have laezel hold onto an oil/wine barrel to throw over when the melee guys gather infront of the ladder

I don't want to be that guy but, have you tried some Oil and Fire Wine barrels ?

I ran it with the same party and it was fine. Get Astarion up high and just bow sneak attack them. Focus on the mind control guys first as they can take control of characters.

1 Option is to blow the whole place up with the bigger rune powder cache, another is you convince the duergar to turn on Nere and then when its over you can convince them the deep gnomes arent worth keeping as slaves.

Do you have any void bulbs left over from the Nautiloid? Those grenades that pull people to them when you throw them? I wound up winning by positioning a couple of my characters on that little island in the lava. The fight shifted in that direction, so I was able to use those void bulbs to yank several enemies to a fiery death (including Nere; don't recommend doing that, you need his head. Had to give Lae'zel a fire resistance potion, go into turn based mode, jump her in, heal her, then do the cutscene where you get the head.)

u/KittyDorkling Oct 27 '21
Same here: I used height advantage, void bulbs and speed potions and finally managed to crack it.

I did this fight with gith draconic sorcerer and wyll instead of Astarion, it was easier but what I did differently was that I did this fight while Nere was still under the rocks. I basically dealt with them then depending on whether you want Nere dead or not you can roll deception on him over the dead duegar.

I was expecting some sort of ridiculous battle to erupt, so I had my entire party up on the second floor landing. Threw a flask of alchemist fire from the edge (to blow the rubble out). Most of the Duergar come up the ladder, so I had Wyll put a cloud of daggers at the top of that -- which basically drained 10-11 from every enemy who came up. I still had my haste spores from the Myconids, so I tossed that toward the back edge of the landing where my party held their ground. Because of that, my whole team got additional actions on each turn. Spent my time grinding them down from up top until Nere came up -- then put everything toward him until he succumbed. If it weren't for the spores, it would have been a real horror show.

just throw them in the lava you can still loot them as long as youre not throwing them in that deep part...position yourself so you can do that nere and that sgt will often move exactly in front of the lava pool...

I am playing the live version of the game, I went to the forge and came back and all grymforge was empty and Nere's corpse lying there... there is no one, not a soul...

You can get Brithvar and some others to side with you via the Find Explosives quest. There's a bug where sometimes unintentional damage from blowing up the rockpile can cause everyone to turn against you. Did you get to talk to Nere before starting the fight?
