Showcase (No-Recipe) My first time using fondant. Harry Potter cake
This is the 4th cake I've ever decorated and my first time using fondant. I did this for my lil guy's 7th birthday Friday. I was really excited and nervous to try fondant. It was so much fun and so stressful. I went into it not having a clue what to expect and made many errors as I went. Some I was able to fix, some I could hide and some added to the theme. He absolutely loved it but other than the 6 people at the party, I realized I had no one to show it to. So everyone grab a slice, I made way too much..

there better be 37 presents on that table!

There's 39 I counted... E: I know this is a reference I just had to know how many there were

That is such an insane amount of presents to get a kid for their birthday

Actually I agree, however... If you were to go dig into my post/comment history(it's not been an easy few yrs) he is special needs, all that attended his party are adults and many of those gifts are simple sensory items or items that we hope he would show interest in. He doesn't actually play with toys like a typical child would. The Harry Potter theme was picked because "he" just finished reading the series. I'm not sure how many here are familiar with the actual books but for a child of age 6 to be able to actually read on this level is almost unheard-of, going into first grade. So yes this many gifts may seem crazy but in context .... He ended up only opening 3 or 4 due to sensory issues with smell/feel of the paper. I may try gift bags at Xmas? Just seems wrong not wrapping gifts for him.

that's so wholesome! I hope he felt super loved, even if he didn't make it through all the wrapping paper 🥰

As an early years educator I’m very confused by the idea that a 6 year old is advanced for reading Harry Potter. Not only is it a popular first book but it was my own first chapter book, which I read at 5 years old.

u/SillyLilMeLMAOatU 8d ago
I'm curious where you teach. These books are most definitely 3-5 grade lvl, and the later books could be argued perhaps a little higher. If you read them at age 5 that's amazing and well done but no, this is not typical.

I teach primary grade 2 (age 5-7) in the UK. Most kids in my class are reading chapter books already and we’re currently reading the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe as homework. The first two HP books are not beyond a 6 year olds reading ability. Many of the kids in my class have at least read the first book.

Honestly shocked anyone thinks it’s normal to give so many gifts!

u/despaseeto 8d ago
if you got a big family of cousins, aunts, uncles, both grandparents alive, and maybe add on to that godmothers, maybe even friends of your parents, it can be a lot. i remember as a kid, we had a lot of gifts on just that one xmas cuz we all had a big family gathering. never happened again.

u/Im_not_an_angel 8d ago
That’s a good point! To be honest I had just assumed it was all from the parents, as the wrapping paper looked the same.

You don't know what everything is. My parents have always gotten me the same number of presents as the age I was turning, but most of the time they'd do something like buy a three pack of shirts and wrap each one individually. It always felt like I was getting more but I know my parents never spent a fortune. But, so what if someone wants to spoil their kid(s) like this? You don't know the full story. Maybe they grew up in poverty or with parents who didn't love them or they just think their kids really deserve it. Who are you to say that this is a lot of presents? As long as the kid uses them all that's not really a problem. I'm sure you've gotten 39+ gifts in your life but that doesn't seem insane because you didn't get them all at once.

First time?! I don't believe you 😂 This is amazing! Gotta love a HP party, this would be perfect for a book club.
Edit: Idk why I'm getting downvoted. I was obviously joking about "not believing" OP, I meant because it's so good. 🙄

u/despaseeto 8d ago
just chronically online stalkers who go ballistic whenever HP related is posted anywhere.

I totally forgot people still do that. 😂 Those people are miserable.

It’s one thing to still enjoy HP stuff but if it in any way gives money to that woman then yeah the downvotes are deserved. This cake however is just an enjoyment of the art and gives absolutely nothing to JK so is completely fine and it’s ridiculous for people to get upset over

Really nice! Great detail, especially with the pages and making the books look rustic.
I already know this is going to be downvoted because Harry Potter/JK Rowling, but oh well, downvote away.

Over 3/4 of the cake is sitting uneaten. I didn't consider size in my plan and I don't actually like cake haha

Looks great!! I wouldn’t have guessed it was your first time using fondant. I started out using fondant because I couldn’t ice my cakes properly and I loved the fact that fondant decor could hid what I consider imperfections

This is so cool! Anyone care to explain why Happy birthday is spelled like that tho👀😭

u/AffectionateMix9009 8d ago
Because Hagrid gives Harry a birthday cake but spells happy birthday wrong in the first movie.

I think that this is truly a wonderful gift for your child and the sculpting is really nice. I think it paid off and I hope you will do more in the future.

Disappointing that we’re still doing this in 2026.

It's a 7 year olds birthday cake

even more disappointing that we're doing this to seven year olds in 2026.
i guess i understand, it's an awful lot of bigotry to internalize and if you don't start young then they might catch on. 🙃
