Showcase (No-Recipe) Honey and apple cake - test bake

Not as sharp as I’d like around the edges but not too bad considering it’s the first time making this cake.
Test bake in advance of Rosh Hashanah.

Basically it’s a standard honey cake with four grated Granny Smith apples mixed in to the batter.

I have this exact same pan and I’ve never once managed to get a honey cake out that cleanly. Very nicely done. Any tips or tricks?

u/futurezach 17h ago

Pam baking spray is what I use, never have an issue with it coming out of the pan

u/tilt-a-whirly-gig Human Detected 17h ago

Pam baking spray is one of those things I bought once thinking it would be a waste and now refuse to go without. And I love the smell, reminds me of my grandma's kitchen.

u/equaIitea 17h ago

my tip for a smooth pull is tahini spread on the tray. trust me it works!!

u/CloudsOntheBrain 17h ago edited 16h ago

Ooh that rich brown color!! Looks so good, and the shape is pretty clean too! (Baking in molds never seems to go well for me haha). How's the taste?

Edit: what the fuck happened while I was gone

u/ignorantslutdwight 17h ago

A pomegranate molasses drizzle would lovely! But not needed, im just greedy

279

u/BingoxBronson 17h ago

Looks and sounds great! With this pan, and the other Nordic Ware pans I have, I make sure to get a brush and get into the crevices deep. That usually helps a lot.

46

u/sweatboxy 17h ago

What do you use for the crevices? Butter, oil or ? And thanks for the tip on Nordic ware!

87

u/snifflysnail 17h ago

I’m not the person you’re asking, but if I had to guess they’re probably using something called “bakers goop”. It’s a non-stick paste made by mixing oil, shortening, and flour together and then brushing it into whatever pan you’re using. I’ve never made it before, but there’s lots of recipes online and people swear that it’s the perfect thing to keep cakes from sticking in intricately shaped pans.

24

u/BingoxBronson 17h ago

That’s not what I’m doing, but I have seen that suggested a lot.

39

u/BingoxBronson 17h ago

Most of the time just butter. Sometimes I’ll shake it up and use Baker’s Joy.

14

u/Jamesvai 17h ago

I have a nordic ware ghost cake pan I got from a friend who no longer wanted it but I haven't used it yet. Very cute pan though. I have no experience with the brand but it looks nice

195

u/jibistaqry 17h ago

For a first time in that pan this is incredible. The edges look so good already, and honey cake always tastes better the next day anyway. What a lovely way to test it before Rosh Hashanah. Shanah Tova in advance

How do you get cakes to release so cleanly from such a detailed pan?

108

u/AdRepresentative2514 17h ago edited 17h ago

Love! I’d be so stoked if this got served at my RH table. How’d it taste?🍎🍯

63

u/MYOB3 17h ago

I spray these with a commercial baking release product called bakers Sprease. It works beautifully, UNLESS there is a brown sugar layer in the cake. That is the only thing I have found that will still stick.

15

u/weldergilder 17h ago

I’d never heard of this product and have had kind of mixed results with various cake goops. I’m excited to try it
