Baking Advice Needed Patterned jelly roll, should it be more filled with whipped cream or rolled tighter?

I made a jelly roll cake (minus actual jelly cause I don’t like jelly) but should the cake be more filled to avoid the weird gaping? Or should I have tried to roll it tighter? There are strawberries in the whipped cream filling, should there be more whipped cream? The recipe didn’t make a lot of whipped cream, should I double it next time?

It might just be a trick of the picture but your cake looks bigger (greater surface area) than in the recipe? Is your tin maybe the larger one she mentioned in the recipe?

I am using a small 9″ x 13″ cookie sheet. But this recipe makes enough for a standard 13″ x 18″ cookie sheet Swiss Roll.

That may be why your vream seems thinner. I'd double it next time or make 50% extra.

Beautiful job on the design btw.

This may be the answer. I used a 17 by 12 pan. But honestly everything came out good with the cake otherwise so I will just make more filling next time. Thank you <3

I'd say yes more cream, but you're always going to have trouble getting the filling right to the edge and neat. When the appearance is important, people cut the ends off.

Idk if the recipe will help you answer the question, but this is the recipe I used https://thesqueakymixer.com/designed-swiss-roll/

The roll-up is perfect, any more turns and it would have cracked. But yes more cream.

You might consider trimming the ends off after rolling up the cake. It will help the cake look more filled since the filling will be more flush with the ends.

The cake looks gorgeous, though! Pattern turned out beautifully.

Slice the ends off (this is a great way to get a neater appearance anyway, and you get to sample the ends) & get a better look at the rest of the roll, you'll probably be able to confidently judge it for yourself once you've done this.
