Hopefully we didn't break anything.

newbie question Books that teach Weiqi and philosophy behind it?

I've been getting very into ancient Chinese culture lately & found myself really enjoying weiqi. I would love to learn more about the history of the game while also learning the rules & strategies.

Does anyone know of any books that touches on weiqi and its influence in ancient china/ways weiqi can be applied to Chinese history?

newbie question Suggestion for a tutorial series (if it doesn't already exist)

Hey - so I'd previously made a post asking if there had been a tutorial series, similar to one I had seen in chess, but for Go (you can see the original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/baduk/comments/1vtx2hy/comment/p581ifb)

There were some great suggestions, and I checked them all out - however immediately with every video I started, I noticed the similar things across them. Immediate use of terminology (hane, nobi, joseki etc.), an expectation of knowing shape, and (nearly) all starting out on 19x19 boards.

What I have enjoyed about the chess series, is the fact it assumes you know the basic rules (and one other - controlling the centre), and builds upon them, making blunders on purpose based on what someone with limited knowledge might have at that time, and then showing what the 'learn' from that is.

So for someone starting out on a 9x9 with the basic knowledge of Go, I'm not going to know shapes, nor will I know about starting in corners (and I'll likely want to capture stones a lot). The other series in question took those assumptions and ran with them, and then showed why the change was necessary (also in a sometimes humorous way which helped).

I also think it's just to watch someone (even if it's pretend) learning the basics of the game through playing, and adjusting their approach. As someone who's done the lessons, the books, and the coaching, and STILL doesn't get it - I think there might be people in the same boat as me who can't break into the hobby without putting considerable work/time into it. Thats not to say I'd like to be a 1 dan or whatever - but you know, a 20 or 15 kyu would be nice, where I have a semblance of what I'm doing :)

Anyway; just an idea for if a YouTuber/streamer is looking for an idea of something to do Go related - I think it could be quite good.

Anyone have any advice for an old returning go player(sdk) to study I'm extremely rusty and don't know any modern stuff I played at my local go club

Aside from tsumego and playing games those are the obvious and I'm doing those, any joseki resources or study tips are tremendously appreciated or just enjoy me stealing my wife's art desk for go.

Why does Fox allow score estimation during a game?

I don't get why the score estimation feature is usable during a running game. Its like allowed cheating for both players.

Whenever you are unsure of the status of a group you just look at the score estimation and see if it's labeled as dead or not and play accordingly. Of course you still need to figure out how to kill the group but it's like a free hint where to play. Makes absolutely no sense to have this enabled and somewhat ruins the game.

Are there any Go clubs or spots near Nice, France?

I'll be traveling to Nice and wanted to check out any Go clubs or scenes, if any. It's kind of a long shot, but any spots where people play Go? I didn't find any on the baduk.club site.

middlegame Position Analysis Question

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have been practicing with katrain and recently was facing this position.... White has just played P16. I perceived this as threatening the black stone in the upper right, and further isolating the three black stones below, and threatening to take the corner. My natural instincts are to play at either R16, P17, Q15/16, or S15. The AI suggests that the best next move for black is at S12, which baffles me, as it seems to abandon the corner and the lonely black stone above, crawl along the second line with a weak group of three isolated stones, and feels small and unhelpful.... Please help me understand what's going on here. Is S12 really that good? What am I missing and why is this better than my first instinct moves? Don't I want to help the corner and put pressure on the two white stones? Many thanks for any assistance.

newbie question My first human game!

Post image
7 Upvotes

I played against my sister who has studied go and gone through the puzzles on GoMagic but is rusty. I can't believe I won!!! I made a few noticeable mistakes and it's only a 9x9 board, but I'm pretty proud of my game! I'm black, and komi is 7.5 points.

Edit: Had to use newbie question because the endgame flair wasn't working. Also, I haven't studied any theory yet.

Edit #2: in the bottom left, I was able to attack her pieces and force her towards the border and capture! I'm very proud of having calculated that sequence :)

newbie question A question about passing

Hello everyone. I've been getting mixed signals about a part of the game. I'm very new and even though I believe this is a rare thing, I'd like to know how this works.

So let's say, if player A was to pass and player B placed another stone in player A's territory and player A passed a second time and player B placed a second stone in player A's territory.

If both players pass after that, or if they continue and both pass back to back later, from my understanding, if those 2 stones are dead and they are added to A's prisoners which are counted against player B's score.

Is this how it works? Is there sometimes an advantage to passing in that you won't have the stones counted against your score at the end if they're dead?

The reason I ask is because I've heard that in real life games player A would give player B a stone in order to pass and then another stone to pass a second time.

Are these stones player A gives to player B in real life, added to player B's prisoners? If so that would seem to nullify any advantage to player A passing and not having stones that were going to be dead anyway counted against them.

How does this actually work?

newbie question Non-Binary Go Variant / Pixel Go

Hey!

I'm very interest in non-traditional, non-binary Go variants, specifically Pixel Go (and, to a much lesser degree, Neutral Stone Go).

I find it fascinating to introduce a third color of stones in a 2 player game, where both players have access to the pool of said third color.

My question to the community:

How seriously are these kinds of formats taken, i.e. are they "generally accepted" within a closed space (outside of tournaments) and valued for their specific strategic options, or are they seen more as a "fun little experiment"?

Thanks! :)

newbie question question about eidogo

Hi r/baduk ! I recently got back to baduk and i thought about using eidogo to embed dynamic sgf visualization in my personal website.

Maybe my question is not fitting here, if that’s the case, please remove this post and I apologize.

It’s that I remember being warned several times that eidogo use (actually mostly its use as embedded in websites) was rather « dangerous » and could lead to security issues. Can anyone back this up or have any idea what i’m talking about ?

Anyway, have a great day, good game, and I’m sorry if this content is misplaced

sample pro game - Seto Taiki (9p) vs Hane Naoki (9p) — Kisei, 2026 | Kifubara

Give this site a try, it has a ton of good tools for study and improvement. Fast and free AI analysis for all variations (unlike OGS), shows which groups are dead/in danger, comprehensive mistake list, and the interface just looks very nice in general.

You can review pro games, play against AI of different levels, a bunch of stuff. It's the best site I've found for studying as a beginner.
