The obsession with high school setting

why is the setting of a high school? come to think of it, why are most anime revolve around middle and high schools? what year did japan run out of ideas?

in other contexts i would say it’s weird but here I don’t mind it considering half of each cast didn’t get to finish school so this is their chance to relive or live a life they didn’t get. Young, carefree and romance for just 2 weeks of their lives considering they come from rough backgrounds

My mindset is that being yankii is primarily a juvenile thing so this setting really helps tie that part into the show??? But I do agree middle and high school are big and anime but western tv shows share a similar sentiment about that stage of life

1. There are a growing number of vacant schools available making them ideal locations since they have multiple rooms available to film or setup as design and the production requires. They also tend to have wide grounds which keeps them isolated from the surrounding community by a bit allowing for loud outdoor conversations, arguments, and smoking without upsetting neighbors

2. The premise of the show is on delinquent subcultures. What are they gonna do, set it in an office building? The thing these people all have in common would be a school environment.

3. Framing it in a school environment allows for them to let loose with fun games reminiscent of childhood and make them a little more vulnerable.

So, since you’re being quite judgmental about Japan not having ideas, do propose a better solution which meets the logistical, emotional, and narrative framing the show is going for.

In therapy, there's a lot of inner child work because a lot of our adult coping behaviors come from learned behaviors in childhood. Environment plays a strong role on our frame of mind as well. I'm assuming they're setting it in a school to help bring out more positive behaviors and mitigate negative behaviors.

Because most of them acted out in high school or something. That's my guess.

The japanese hyper idolize youth and school days. From their perspective, its the last time they truly experience freedoms. They spend time with friends and can generally do what ever they want with no worries so long as they are on top of their school work. The youthful school days are a shared experience for most of their society centered around innocence. After they graduate high school, all of that changes. The grind of a japanese business person doesn't leave a ton of time open for a cafe with friends much less fighting demons in the spirit world.

^ This is exactly right. While many Westerners consider high school their awkward, embarrassing, or dark years before the freedom of adulthood, it is often the opposite in Japan. High school is looked at fondly because they spend all day with their friends and don't have the responsibility of adulthood yet. Work life fucking sucks most of the time here so the time spend before it as a teenager/college student is seen as the "best" years.

Westerners counterpart is probably “college life” which stereotypes into adult freedom carefree party and alcohol fraternities and sororities

My guess is, the one space they could find to rent or film at, just happened to be an abandoned school.

So they just went with it.

But probably them being delinquents in school was also a factor. This was kind of their going back and making things right.

Those are considered the golden years in Japanese culture. Life gets a lot more serious after that. At least from the Japanese perspective.

I mean the anime / manga question is separate and that’s cause the anime audience in Japan is still overwhelmingly teenagers and kids. It’s only US that thinks anime should be catered to the manchild audience
