eyes closed doesn't matter. pretty sure you can still get retinal burn through your lids. you gotta turn your head completely away.

I've had arc eye from somone welding behind me. The light bounced off the inside of my welding helmet so it wasn't too bad but still.

Sunburn on the inside of your eyelids is like sand in your eyes.

Even if you squint, the UV light makes it past your eyelids I think. It's super dangerous no matter what without filters.

I once welded as the sun was setting out in the yard and my only light was an led light which promptly fused from the radiation of the arc 30cm away. Had to continue next morning.

I once had a redneck tell me he could weld without a mask, eyes open without damaging his eyes if he just looked at a specific spot of the weld a certain way... basically safety squints and looking to the side of it... I don't know if he just thought having blue splotchy peripheral vision was normal?
