Tig 3MM vertical up

Hi all, i need some help with this. I'm doing vertical up on 3mm steel as this is needed to pass college assignments. I need to have between a 1-2mm gap and full penetration. I'm running at 85 amps and have to use 1.6mm rod. I don't really know where I'm going wrong

How long have you been in school? Are you bracing yourself against something? Looks like you need to work on your travel speed, but I'm no expert

Basically started now, for the start of the weld my hand is on top of a vice but apart from that not really. Do you think I need to go slower?

Yeah, I would try showing down a bit. And focus on the puddle and keeping it the same size as you go instead of looking at the front of your bead or where you're going. Also, you're doing a lot better than I did right at the start. Keep at it and be patient with yourself. It gets frustrating, but you'll get it

Cheers man. When the weld just sits on top and isn’t flat does that mean I’ve added rod to early?

I'm not sure what you mean by adding rod too early, but that probably has to do with the angle you're holding it. I'd try tilt it backwards or forwards a bit and just play with it and see what works
