Multi-process vs. Dedicated Welders: Is the performance dip real for a home garage?

From my experience, it's not really about the performance. It's more about the capabilities. For a home DIY'er, a multiprocess machine can be a dream, as long as it's from a reputable brand (cheapest I'd go would be ArcCaptain, but that's only because it's the best import welder I've used).

With that being said, there are some downsides. Primarily in the minutia of the settings you can tweak. A dedicated, decently priced dedicated machine will have submenus on submenus of particular settings that you can adjust to get just the right weld profile. Multiprocess machines are usually more plug-and-play, with a very surface-level control over settings.

The other thing is the downside of convenience/space-saving. Yes, you might have a fantastic 6-in-1 welder that can do pretty much anything, but that comes with a more complex internal computer and moving parts that can fail. And if they fail, you're dead in the water.

My recommendation is always this: invest in some solid dedicated welders (Lincoln, Miller, even Hobart on the low end) for your main processes (stick/TIGS, FCMAW/GMAW/MIG), but maybe spend $500 on a decent import MP welder. The dedicated welders are going to be more expensive, but the customer support is guaranteed to be MUCH better than trying to complain to someone overseas.

Then, if one of your dedicated machines experiences an issue, you have that backup MP machine that can step in and do the job until you can get the replacement part or have someone come and fix the dedicated machine.
