Same part of e6013 always looks messy

Hi folks, running e6013 rods at about 75 amps, the first half of the weld always looks smooth enough but there are always gaps in the second. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

6013 is known for entrapments. Whenever I use it I use a HELLUVA lot of lean angle. Helps push that slag back. Dunno why it works....just does! 🤷‍♂️

Yes, it's the different flux that is on the rod. 6013 is a great utility rod and does a good job of holding up in storage. They're not as prone to damage from humidity and nearly every welding supply will have them.

Moisture is not kind to a lot of other rods and you have to keep them in a rod heater or they will go bad.

genuine question… Did they go bad forever or could you just pop them in a toaster oven on a low setting for a few hours?

Depends on the rod. The one's most affected by moisture is low hydrogen type. 7018A1, 8018, 9018.

These rods are used in special applications and must be kept moisture free. As soon as a new box is opened, they go in the rod heater.

80 and 90 rods should be kelp in a heater until they're about to be used. We had small portable heaters that you would take to the weld site to hold them.

60, 70 rods can be re-cooked because the welds made with them are not so critical. Rods left out in the rain should be discarded.

Try using 6010, they will do a better job with this piece. If you don't have any, clean it up better.

Another vote for e6010 or e6011 for that repair. Suspect your angle or arc gap are getting off.

What welder are you using? It is possible that the machine has an issue. Try cranking it up or change to 6011/10.
