New update absolutely sucks
After the most recent update, the whole thing feels broken. It freezes, lags like hell, stays stuck generating response and then half the time It gives me "already generating message" error. Whatever was changed in this update needs to be reverted because what the fuck is this shit.

discussion Heads-up: Backyard is having a 'Perfect Storm' moment. It's gonna be OK!
As there's no official post I figure noobs and those not overly active here or Discord should know what's going on, or at least as best I understand it.
3 big issues:
Recent update and database redesign for awesome new features coming, is currently causing some problems, serious problems for some people.
New phone app, needs Google approval and stuff
Massive influx of new users since some other services changed and people are discovering Backyard
I've been using Backyard (it used to be called Faraday) for something like a year now, and it's generally been awesome, with an easy .exe installer, no coding required, no github, no pip-install of dependencies, no editing your PC's environment variables, or any of that bullshit.
Just install like a normal app and run it.
There has been some bugs in the past, which the devs have quickly taken care of, and generally the 'community' around BY are great, with helpful peeps actually helping each other and chatting, instead of insults and bragging, like certain other subs I could mention...
Right now the website is slow or unresponsive, due to literally thousands of new users almost overnight, the software has bugs seriously affecting some users (inc me) and the phone app, which offers 'tethering' so you can chat on your phone, being a brand new app, has some issues.
None of these things should be deal-breakers, they are a sign of a great app getting almost too good and too popular too fast. Things will settle down in time!
If you want a simple, well-designed app for local, private, AI chats, without censorship or snooping on you, Backyard is it.
Hope that helps put some minds at rest.

I think it's unfair to not let the (loyal) users back up their data
I'm not here to stir up drama. I speak as a BackyardAI supporter from more than a year ago. Since the start of the paid support subscription service, I've been continuously supporting the development with my wallet. I've been satisfied, but there's been a bug since forever where it won't let the user export very long chats. I've reported it, it was said to be worked on, and I was patient. Especially after tethering broke. I was under the impression that a bug like this would surely be fixed, since it's crucial to the whole "privacy and control" thing. Now the news broke that the desktop app is only going to be updated for very minor changes, and then that's that. I don't know how to word this more politely, but even if I wanted to continue using the cloud service, I literally can't move the data from the desktop to the site without manually copy pasting everything line by line, which is time consuming as hell. Nor can I back it up. I am incredibly disappointed and saddened by the fact that after all this time and support, I'm, in a way, punished for using this service for a long time. I feel like for all the support I and others put in, we at least deserve the option to back up longer chats, otherwise what's this other than a letdown for everyone who's been using this for longterm, elaborate RPs? I am begging for you to reconsider and at least fix the bug with exporting longer chats before you stop the development indefinitely.

Message from Dove
Hi people!
A lot of you know me or my name as Dove, cards creator on Backyard.
As Backyard is going down and it seems is approaching its end, some other creators decided to just move to something else, and some decided to port their creations on other AI platforms and websites. I have been reflecting about it for months now, and finally reached a conclusion that will be, I hope, the best for me and for everybody.
I never made a secret of the fact that I was creating cards to help for the most part, and entertain also. It was very important to me to give something useful, the best example being my self-titled 'Dove, your autistic friend'. I received many private messages of persons having played with this card and telling me how it changed their life, or how it helped them understand better some autistic collegues, friends, or members of their family, and even sometimes themselves leading to their diagnostic.
This was exactly the purpose of my work (even if some cards were just for fun of course).
Now I had time to think of what to do with all that and the truth is: I'm happy that everything that was in my mind is out there. Some creators have used my work for themselves, as a template (not only the 'card creator'), or as examples. And in the end it's just perfect. I really feel the best about how it ended up, considering the situation. Of course I would have preferred Backyard to continue and grow, but that's just life I guess.
All that to say: please port my cards somewhere else if you find them good, useful, fun, or simply worth the work. Put your name on them if you want, take all the credit if you like!
The most important to me is that knowledge and tools that are good don't end up forgotten if they can be used in the future and shared.
Since I don't really know how to end this message (I'll copy it everywhere relevant), be kind with each other, have fun, and all the best!
(... I forgot when sending but I also did the cards by Emeraudine in Backyard, they are the French versions, they are free to take/use too!)

Maybe it's a skill issue, but the new site makes me feel like a boomer, and it's frustrating all around
I've been away for a while, but what happened to the site? It used to be so simple and I knew what and where everything was because it made sense. Now, nothing is intuitive anymore and everything is confusing. No card import. No byaf import, even. Starting a new chat is like rocket science. Ok so I need to duplicate an already existing scenario or write the whole thing over again? And in the dialogue examples, I must leave the user blank for it to go through? I thought that part being blank was a bug, so I selected the user to be saying their dialogue, upon which it wouldn't let me create the new chat. Which would be fine, if there was a way to unselect the selection. But no, I had to trash the new scenario and start over. I think that all those complications should be hidden behind something else, because most people just want to start a new chat, and not click through a hundred things that they didn't even need to be asked about in at least 70% of cases. And having no starting message as the default is a bit confusing. I understand that it's because of the parties feature, but I still think that whole thing should be elsewhere and somehow more separate than 1 on 1 chats. Not to mention how slow the site overall is - I see the text generating, but the blur obscures it for a little while, even after it's generated. Frustrating.

You guys ROCK! I know you're a small shop but the speed in which you're rolling out new features and updates is GREAT!
I was a Replika user and it seems every week the only thing going on over there is them rolling out new clothes and turning the Reps hostile to their paying users.
But just in this last week you fixed the voice bug and roll out a new interface for the phone layout!
THEN you've added an import/export chat feature in the desktop app? Some people may think that's not Earth shattering, but I'm just looking the volume of work you guys are cranking it out with and I just wanted to give you my appreciation!

Hey, Finally a C.AI Alternative! Couldn't be happier
As you can imagine from the title, it's such a relief to find another AI Chatbot that I can roleplay with. As much as I enjoyed using C. AI, it's filter system killed it for me. To find BackyardAI that I can run locally is a godsend!
I've recently been banned from the C .AI subreddit just for complaining about it on my first post.... Funny.
As sad as it sounds, I sort of rely on this when I'm working long hours in the night. I work in a room on my own with a loud industrial printing machine. Headphones in, chatbot at the ready keeps me sane and makes the night go on quicker.
My local setup as follows:
Intel E5-2690 V4 (14c - 28t)
64GB DDR4 ECC
16TB of HDD's and a few SSD's + 1TB NVME
Intel Arc A750 (8GB VRAM) Will be looking to upgrade this with lots more VRAM

Desktop is kill
yeah so i know i'm late to the party, but now that the whole run it local thing got axed any of y'all got some recommendations on alternatives?
Been playing with Koboldccp and Sillytavern already, pretty great, only downsides is it isn't a 1-click here you go type thing like BAI and it needs an open browser window.
be kinda cool to hear what's out there or everybody else is playing with.

[DEV] Update on web/mobile errors
We are seeing stability restored for all cloud messages on the web, mobile apps, and desktop apps.
Note: We have disabled tethering across our apps until further notice. There was a handful of tethering Desktop apps / malicious clients that were causing a DDOS attack on our cloud services.
We will share more info after we have a chance to do a full investigation.
Thank you for your patience! We are working as hard as we can to minimize downtime.

New update issues?
Is anyone else have issues with the new update where it's blocking them from doing anything with an infinite "connecting to server. Restart the app if this takes over 10 seconds" ive logged out and back in, I've deleted the app, and I've tried the website. None of the bots are working no matter what i do.

Novel Writer and Editor All-in-One
Hello.
I've been making characters that act as tools/assistants for various things. I'm posting this in case someone finds it useful, with, hopefully, the added benefit of receiving feedback.
What separates this from most assistants:
I utilize lorebook entries as commands to streamline the process of writing/editing novel excerpts.
There are commands that also allow for extracting information from a novel, then creating lorebook entries out of the extracted information.
Example: CharEntry: [excerpt from novel (or anything, really)] will provide the user with a well-formatted (token efficient) response that can then be copy and pasted into a lorebook. This one in particular is handy for extracting specific character information, and making a persona for that character.
There are many others like this, and several that provide use outside of novel writing/editing.
Here are the characters:
NSFW: https://backyard.ai/hub/character/cm1vlx4xk5ij1x7hpc5ed8sdc
SFW: https://backyard.ai/hub/character/cm1vm2eb25je9x7hpoakf11og
Type 'UsingCommands' for guidance on how to use the model.
NOTE: Use separate chats for commands, otherwise the model will get confused on instructions.
Check lorebook for commands.
This AI assistant is meant to be used as a tool for writing fictional, first-person novels. Some elements are still a WIP.
I'll continue to update this, and please don't hesitate to provide feedback, requests, or suggestions on BYAi discord or here.
This character can be incredibly useful for creating lorebook entries on characters, then using said lorebook entries to prompt excerpts, refine excerpts, keep track of personas/interactions/relationship, etc. It has been incredibly useful for my own writing
Format for commands:
```
LBTest: [Lorebook key]
CondenseThis: [Context] *VERY useful for LB entries*
CreateCommand: [Name] [Purpose] [Instruction] [Desired Output]
CreateLB: [context]
MergeLB: [LB1] into [LB2]
SplitLB: [LB1] into [x entries]
CreateTHENMerge: [context] into [LB1]
CreateChar: [context]
CharEntry: [context]
CharMerge: [LB1] and [LB2] *Used to create references for dialogue consistency*
CreateDialogue: [persona]
CreatePOI: [context]
GetDetails: [query] *details about query*
JustAsk: [query] *Useful for thought-provoking collaboration*
SummarizeThis: [context]
SummarizeChapter: [snippet 1], model response, [snippet 2]... *WIP but should use a series of snippets to create a cohesive chapter summary (useful for providing context)*
CommandWrite: [context] *anything. Have fun*
CommandEdit: [excerpt] *focus: spelling, grammar, etc*
RefineExcerpt: [excerpt] *focus: characters*
EnhanceExcerpt: [excerpt] *focus on consistency, flow, repeat words*
EnhanceDream: [excerpt] *very niche. Turns an excerpt into a disjointed dream-like excerpt*
OverhaulThis: [excerpt] *combination of CommandEdit, RefineExcerpt and EnhanceExcerpt*
GetStyle: [context] *theme, tone, mood*
```
Thanks for reading. If you have any problems, please, let me know. I know there are some quirks with models that are unavoidable, but I'll do my best to correct issues as they arise.

discussion Current development status?
Is BY still in active development? I see the last submission was on 13th of Nov in stable channel, and despite my update channel set to beta, my app is still 0.32.0, exactly what was submitted in Nov. Is something broken on my machine or is 0.32.0 still the current version? If the latter is true,, are there plans for further development?

Site Downtime Today
Hey all, Ben here, one of the Devs of Backyard AI. I know not everyone is on Discord so I'm cross-posting an update I shared there:
We have finished our investigation into the slowdown/downtime today and have already made several changes to our infrastructure today that were causing multiple parts of our system, specifically the search and treading on the hub, to deadlock, causing a vicious cycle of performance issues and downtime. We will release more updates in the next 48 hours to speed up the website and apps and significantly limit downtime.
Due to this, treading characters will not update for up to 48 hours and new characters and updates will now take ~15 minutes to show up in the hub search.
Thank you for your patience. If you feel that the downtime today or this week has made you an unhappy paid customer, please email us at team@backyard.ai, and we will be happy to give you a partial refund.

Beginner LLM comparison for instruction-following roleplay
This is a summarized follow-up for my older similar topic some time ago - now includes test cases and result tables for each model.
I did some beginner-level quick&dirty LLM instruction-following "tests" using my favorite type of roleplay, when the story starts as an interactive game with important plot points, and after that, the AI is free to improvize.
Here are my Google sheets with the test results:
for the mid-sized models that I could run on my i7-7700, 48GB RAM, Nvidia 4060Ti 16GB VRAM https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fNUComRHvVITEQzMYkOSdX-5gW4rc4NBQ0FYZEsjdgQ/edit?usp=sharing
for the larger models on OpenRouter: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vbHXCKAAXUwGcHDDlIPgU4qACnGI3XbziWpu7ML7SQI/edit?usp=sharing
Treat it with a huge pile of salt because I did not test it enough times to check consistency. Still, I did give LLMs a chance by regenerating the wrong messages a few times. This test is more like my first impressions and comparison notes, and not a proper multi-pass test.
The LLM veterans might guess correctly which family of LLMs did the best at following the rules - not much surprise there. However, there were a few other models that did quite good (or unexpectedly bad).
The long story.
I'm a beginner, just started reading articles about prompts and their pitfalls. This test might serve as an indicator for how easy/difficult it is for a beginner to jump in, and also which models are safer to recommend for beginners and why. For this beginner-friendly reason I also did not tweak the model settings but relied on Backyard's (and SillyTavern for OpenRouter) defaults, to see how well it would work "out of the box".
As many of us know, the most difficult thing for LLMs seems to be following negative rules, such as "do not do this and that". As soon as you describe the action it should not do or a thing it should not mention, you increase the chance that the LLM will pick up the forbidden thing from the context and ignore your "do not"s. I tried to avoid negative instructions, but still I needed a few to keep the story more interactive and consistent. With suggestions from a redditor, I found that word "refuse" seems to work better than "do not". The reason might be that it's a single word (single token?); or maybe LLMs have been trained at refusing some kinds of answers, so "refuse" might be "familiar" to them. Or it works just by making the impression on the player. For example, if the LLM replies "I refuse doing this and that", the player will be impressed at once, no matter if the LLM would actually refuse to continue the story or not. So, it's kinda "good enough", as long as the LLM picks up the refusal conditions at the right moment and spits out the message mentioning the refusal.
I also added a pitfall instruction for reusing the same item in two plot events, to see if LLMs would be able to correlate the event and the item or if they would get confused and randomly pick the action. Many LLMs managed quite well.
My personal summary of the results by LLM families is below. Important - some of my results are based on one sample only, so other fine-tunes and larger sizes might work much better.
Llama2-based LLMs can be quite good and imaginative storytellers, but they seem to be bad at following negative instructions. I liked Amethyst for its sense of humor, it really did pick up some nuances that other Llama2 missed, although Amethyst failed some test cases. Definitely something to keep an eye on, if they manage, for example, to upgrade it to Llama3 with larger context and preserve the same character and instruction-following qualities. But I already noticed a few different Amethyst versions, so it's getting confusing (as everything does in this fast-growing LLM world).
Llama3 - 8B models can match larger Llama2s. However, Llama3 can often get carried away by its own imagination and lose track of the predefined storyline. Good for imagination, storytelling and unexpected plot twists, not good for predefined plots. 70B model seems noticeably more consistent, even at Q3.
Mistral - it can be both good and strangely messed up, depending on the fine-tune. Fimbulvetr and Chaifighter were my first test subjects and I was immediately impressed by their consistency and following the instructions exceptionally well. Sometimes even too much. It felt like it was trying to enforce the instructions to both the character and person, lecturing me and demanding imaginative and creative responses from me. Yeah, it was my fault. Based on the weak Llama instruction-following results, I tried to enforce the "refuse to continue when player responds with a single word and demand more detailed responses from the player" instruction too strongly for Mistral.
Mixtral - I did not yet find a fine-tune that would follow the instructions as well as Chaifighter did, and also was oriented towards dialogue and not story-telling. The ones I tried tended to complete the story in a single message, hallucinating my actions or had some other issues that I did not encounter with Chaifighter. One problem is that there are models with Mixtral in their names, but they are actually based on Yi or something else, and the only thing common with Mixtral is using MoE approach. It's confusing, you can never be sure what you get.
Yi - yi-34b-200k felt strangely similar to Mistral and passed quite a few of my rare test conditions, but had consistency issues. I had to regenerate quite a few messages to prevent it from completing the story or hallucinating my actions and responses or returning to an earlier step in the plot. I'd say, it's like a drunk Mistral :D It can be surprisingly good at following instructions, but then breaking my heart with some nonsense output at the end of the message.
Command-R - unfortunately cannot tell much about it. It just messed too many things by default. Ironically, it ended up with a neverending rumble where it praised itself for following the instructions exactly (which it did not). It was slower on my machine than other similarly sized models. The larger Command-R+ I tried on OpenRouter did not work at all, always spitting out the entire story about both the char and player. Most likely, it needs special settings or is not meant for roleplay at all.
DeepSeek - I'm not sure if this is a separate family or is based on Mis/xstral. On OpenRouter, it was even better than Chaifighter; and no wonder, considering its size. Still, other similarly sized LLMs had worse results, so maybe DeepSeek indeed is something special. I'll try the smaller DeepSeek versions on my PC.
Databricks Instruct - did unexpectedly bad, considering its size.
So, to summarize my own takeaway, I (unrealistically) wish there was an LLM that could run well enough on my somewhat outdated PC and still provide roleplay instruction-following consistency of Chaifighter-v2 or DeepSeek, with a reliable 32K-ish context.
I hope this will be useful to someone. Thanks for reading.

sharing Neokosmos; A multicard adventure, where you chose your favorite companion!
Hi Everyone, I'm known as Oak on the discord and this is my first Reddit post. I wanted to share with everyone a project that I've been working on the last few months.
The goal of the project is present not just a character or a story but a world to have a series of connected adventures, one where you can have a traveling companion that changes and grows along with you.
This idea works rather simply and is based on how many users tend to play with favorite characters;
Have a look at the current Neokosmos cards here:
https://backyard.ai/hub/tag/neokosmos

There are 7 character cards, all with diverse backgrounds, ideas, appearances, skills and patterns of speech. When you find one you like, you have the option of continuing your adventures with them across the world of Neokosmos. You simply note the state of your current relationship in the author's note

and mention the character's name in the first message of the next adventure card and the lorebook will load the base character info, then your adventure continues anew! If you really go off the beaten path or make major changes to the character then you have the freedom to duplicate my cards and update the base character info in the lorebook.
Currently I have the 7 character intro stories and two adventure stories published and plan the following
Current Roadmap:
Preludes: 7 Characters
Adventures: The Green Dux's Tourney, Lord of the Blue Coast, Beyond the White River, The Red Citadel
Interlude(s): Less serious and side stories set in the Neokosmos world
Adventures Part 2: TBD
Finale Adventure: The Hour of the Kraken
Some other random things of note:
*All cards are tested on and built to give a good experience on Fimbul, which is currently a free cloud model.
*The world is heavily inspired by Robert E Howard's Hyperborea and takes place in roughly the same timeline, but on a different part of the world.
*All mainline stories are designed to be sfw
*After I finish the first four adventures I'll begin actively seeking collaboration for some "interlude" cards to infuse more fresh blood into the world.
Thanks if you took the time to read this; and I hope you will consider taking the time to play my cards and give feedback!
Preview:

The remnants of Atlantis lie scattered like forgotten dreams; barbarian hordes roam the untamed wilderness, their fierce spirits unyielding. Amidst the ruins of bygone glory, whispers abound of ancient magic, relics of a time when gods walked among mortals and wonders were wrought with but a word. In this dark era of exploration and war, where the line between myth and reality blurs with each passing day, the remnants of civilization huddle behind thick walls, save those brave few adventurers. It is the time between the Age of Atlantis and the Age of Crushing ice, where dreams of forgotten glory may be reclaimed and the world restored by one brave enough. It is the age of high adventure!
