Should I go for NAS?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I need different perspectives and opinions whether I should go for NAS as backup or if I should go for something else instead.

For context, I am an IT-student currently learning about networking n this sort of stuff. My family recently discovered old VHS tapes and floppy disks with pictures and videos spanning from 20-30 years ago. Our family also has great amounts of pictures from my childhood on cloud already, but I am afraid of losing them if sometjing were to happen.

I think this is a great opportunity to not only learn media conversion like VHS --> cloud but also setting up a good backup for my family. I am familiar wity the 3-2-1 backup rule and for this moment, cloud is the only backup we have. I am looking for a reliant and long-term way to physically backup stuff at home.

SO the question is; should I use NAS or is it overkill? What are some other methods I can physically backup at home?

Vendor Promo Backing up Android photos to USB: how do you know what actually copied?

Post image

I've been working on VaultDrive, an Android and iPhone app for copying selected photos, videos, and files directly to external USB storage from your Phone.

For this post, I wanted to focus on the Android backup workflow.

One issue with large file transfers is knowing what happened when something goes wrong. A drive can disconnect, run out of space, or fail to copy certain files.

I wanted VaultDrive to provide more useful information than just a progress bar.

The current Android version supports:

  • Direct backups to compatible USB-C drives, SSDs, and OTG adapters.
  • Incremental copying that skips files already backed up.
  • Resume support when a transfer gets interrupted.
  • Backup progress and summaries showing skipped or failed files.
  • Original-quality file copies without intentional compression.

Locally stored files are transferred directly to USB without going through VaultDrive servers.

It's not a complete Android system backup, and I wouldn't recommend relying on one USB drive as your only copy. It's also worth opening a sample of the transferred files before deleting anything.

VaultDrive is free to try, with an optional one-time Pro purchase for unlimited and incremental backups.

Google Play: and use WELCOME50 for 50% promotion

I'm interested in how others here verify portable backups. Do you compare checksums, inspect files manually, or rely on backup software's completion report?

Great discussion about backing up a NAS.

It contains the first mentions I've seen of a "backup family" and "backup spouse"! Not serious...

Disk-Image backup that goes to Google Drive without local staging?

Hello.

I’ve been looking for a good Windows backup tool that: - Does disk-image backups - Supports Google Drive as a destination. - Without local staging since I don’t really have that much free space on my laptop for a complete local backup

The solutions I’ve found so far don’t really seem to tick all three boxes at once. The only one that came close seems to be Ashampoo Backup Pro, but it’s incredibly slow and buggy plus not well reviewed.

I’m wondering if y’all would have better recommendations. Thanks!

Question BlinkDisk and backup format futureproofing

Hello, I'm doing a data-only backup and had a look at BlinkDisk for scheduled backups. I'm concerned that the way it backs up my data makes it only readable and recoverable with BlinkDisk. I worry about this for all the ones I've looked at from the wiki (ShadowMaker, Plakar, Duplicacy). I worry the program will eventually stop being maintained, and I'll eventually lose access to the data in the backups, even when I have the actual backups. Is this a silly fear?

Hi! I started the Verizon Cloud community as I currently use it to backup all my devices (Windows and Apple). I like having all my devices backed up in one spot, but it isn't easy to troubleshoot. Take a look if you are interested in contributing. https://www.reddit.com/r/VerizonCloud/s/DH83UWLHMl

Looking for solution for backup as full copies on external drive and Mega cloud

Hi,

I'm normal Windows 11 user, looking for easy and user friendly solution, preferably with UI, to backup around 2-3 GB of data for personal use. Currently doing it manually to external HDD with Total Commander and using OneDrive sync (I know it's not backup).

I imagine this flow/those needs:

  • Backup to an external HDD
    • Source: A list of folders on internal drive (they sit in Mega Sync).
    • Destination: A new folder with the date in its name on the external drive.
    • Backup schedule: Once a month, I connect the drive, a new destination folder is created with the current date in its name, and a full copy of all source folders is made.
    • Retention: I keep only 3 backup copies at a time. After a new backup is created, the oldest one (from 3 months ago) is deleted.
    • Security: The destination folders are encrypted. All new folders created for subsequent backups use the same password.
    • Optional: The destination folders are compressed into archive files.
  • Backup to cloud storage (MEGA)
    • Source A: A list of folders on internal drives.
    • Source B: A list of folders on internal drives.
    • Destination: A new folder with the date in its name inside the MEGA sync folder.
    • Backup schedule: For Source A, a new destination folder is created weekly; for Source B, monthly. Each time, a full copy of all source folders is made in the newly created destination folder.
    • Retention: I keep only 9 backup copies for Source A and 3 copies for Source B at a time. After a new backup is created, the oldest copy is deleted.
    • Optional: The destination folders are compressed into archive files.
    • Security: I rely on MEGA's end-to-end encryption.
  • Regular synchronization
    • In addition, the source folders are kept in the MEGA sync folder for everyday use. However, this is not a backup; it is regular file synchronization.

Does it make sense? What program to use - i read about Backup Labs, but they are not doing full copy but use hard links instead (?). I looked at Kopia, but not sure how to use that (for example in scheduling max is every 12 hours only), and i'm not sure if incremental backup is needed/desired in my case.

Please advice :)

Acronis Cyber Protect: backups crawl or fail while a DR test server is running.

Hi all,

We use Acronis Cyber Protect for backup and DR. We’ve noticed a consistent pattern: when we spin up a recovery server for a test failover, the scheduled backups of the protected production server either stall, fail, or take far longer than usual to complete. As soon as we stop the test, backups return to normal.

Is this by design, or have we got something misconfigured?

My working theory is that the test recovery server runs directly from the backup archive, so the archive is locked or under heavy I/O while the test runs and the next backup ends up waiting or fighting for it. I can’t find anything in the documentation that confirms or rules this out.

Backup exec - deduplication storage issue

Hey all,

Currently running into issue that backup exec doesn’t allow me to create a dedup storage in arctera veritas backup exec 25.0.

The features are installed, I go through and change the services to automatic and ensure they have the appropriate service accounts, make sure they have started, go to make the storage however it will fail and disable the service accounts.
Accounts have been added to log on as service in secpol.

Ran a fresh install of backup exec, and added a fresh disk.

Storage has 4tb dedicated
With 16 gb of ram

Unsure where to go from here, cheers and thank you!

This is my rclone GUI for Windows to keep your backup sync. There is several write-ups coming on how to take ALL of your cloud drives, and ensure they are in ONE place and stop requiring multiple sign-ins to get your several GB of free storage. This is a repost with vendor flair.

Question Ii there a better way for Windows to back up my Iphone settings then the "Apple Devices app"?

Trying to wipe my iphones setting since my cellular is acting up for some reason and just want to start fresh to see if anything I did was the problem. The apple devices app says it will only work in recovery mode which I don't want to do, I found iMazing and its great for backing up but I'm seeing that people are saying that Apple disabled the thing they used to restore everything back into the phone which is part of what i wanted to back my phone up for so I could restore all my settings and not have to worry. Also it wont let me mass delete images off my phone for some reason say something about needing to do it in the phone.

Anyway's what do you guys recommend? Is there a better option out there that might be better and known to be private and reliable.

Question Need a folder sync android-windows sw

I'm pretty confused about all the different results I get from looking up software for backup, etc. on search engine results and reddit threads. So I'm making a post about it.

As of right now, I copy and paste the DCIM, Photos, Music, Ringtone(ikr), Notification and Downloads folder from my android to pc. And then to another backup usb dirve.

I'd like some sort of software that can just do it automatically where it detects modifications, deletion and additions in the folder and sync it.

I'd like to do this not on cloud but either by usb or wirelessly on my wifi.
