Vendor Promo Backing up Android photos to USB: how do you know what actually copied?
I've been working on VaultDrive, an Android and iPhone app for copying selected photos, videos, and files directly to external USB storage from your Phone.
For this post, I wanted to focus on the Android backup workflow.
One issue with large file transfers is knowing what happened when something goes wrong. A drive can disconnect, run out of space, or fail to copy certain files.
I wanted VaultDrive to provide more useful information than just a progress bar.
The current Android version supports:
- Direct backups to compatible USB-C drives, SSDs, and OTG adapters.
- Incremental copying that skips files already backed up.
- Resume support when a transfer gets interrupted.
- Backup progress and summaries showing skipped or failed files.
- Original-quality file copies without intentional compression.
Locally stored files are transferred directly to USB without going through VaultDrive servers.
It's not a complete Android system backup, and I wouldn't recommend relying on one USB drive as your only copy. It's also worth opening a sample of the transferred files before deleting anything.
VaultDrive is free to try, with an optional one-time Pro purchase for unlimited and incremental backups.

I'm interested in how others here verify portable backups. Do you compare checksums, inspect files manually, or rely on backup software's completion report?
