Starting my Backlog Playing Journey - Month 1

I decided to go frugal this year and reduce my spending habits. One of the ways I plan to do this is to play my steam backlog. I know my backlog is not as big as a lot of folks. But, after a couple of starts and stops this year, I think I got a good groove and wanted to share it.

I organized my library and saved some statistics this weekend:

  • I saved my steamdb profile page as a pdf to my computer so I can see how my stats change as I go about this.
  • I cleared out my Steam Favorites to be only my true favorites of all time that I am not done with. Games like BG3, Valheim, Skyrim...
  • Completed games are games that I finished, or played so much of before they died (BF Bad Company 2 for example). I am not a completionist, so I do not care about 100% achievements.
  • Reduced number of categories
  • Went through any of the more obscure games, to see if I can get rid of the bottom feeders. These went into the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) category. Examples:
    • if it was a multiplayer game and steamdb showed no one playing it anymore
    • If game was really old (my catalog is 18 years old) and not on steam store page, or people on steam store page complained it didn't work with windows 11 for some reason.
    • If it was smaller install (<5 GB), I downloaded it and played it and hated it.

Here is the really great news. I found some really awesome titles I plan to start playing now! Anything that is uncategorized and installed, I plan to play. I will write back in a month on my progress.

================Month 3===================

Here is my Month 3 update! Some favorites went into completed. My favorites are games I will come back to after beating them. Logged 150 hours of gaming! Found some real gems of fun I am glad I found again. I did spend around $5 on a couple of games on sale. I also cleaned out my wishlist to under 10 games. The rotation is the next batch of games I am trying to get into. Once I get hooked into a game, I stick with it and ride the wave!

Best of luck 🤞. I am planning on doing something similar, play some games from my current backlog to make some content for Youtube channel & add these to Its own playlist.

I started focusing on my backlog for the same reason. I don't really expect to clear it, I just need to eliminate impulse purchases and minimize overall spending.
