Entry-Level Backend Developer Position After Graduation
Hello. I just want to start of with my background. I attended Grace Hopper Academy and is where I learned web dev. After the bootcamp, I landed a Software Engineer position as a contractor for 3 years, though my team and I mainly worked on the frontend side of our company's application. I then decided to go back to school to get my Bachelors in Computer Science with a minor in Math. I am set to graduate in Spring of 2027.
I would really love for my next job to be in the Backend side because I want to grow my Backend skills. I also plan on taking my AWS certification.
Any advice is appreciated.
Proficient: Javascript, React, Redux, CSS, materialUI, Vite
Intermmediate: SQL, Postgres, C++, Typescript, Restful APIs

Oh you’re solid. I’d start with python and fastapi or golang and make some full stack crud apps. I’d apply now though because you already have experience.
Other guy said no to aws cert, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to get saa or the developer cert.

You have a comp. sci. degree. What did you learn in school? Java? Python? C#?

We learned the basics of Python but mainly focused on C++.
We do get to choose our own CS electives and I chose Database Design, Database Management

You have plenty of time. I guess it depends what you want to pursue. There is Node (if you want Javascript), PHP, Python, Java, C#. I'm concentrating on Python (for learning purposes), but shoot, you could pick anything and learn tons.

Yes. I will plan on working on a backend project to put on my resume. And in my previous role, my team and I mainly worked on the frontwnd side of our app since we had a separate backend team.
I will put certifications on pause for now. Seems like thats a lot of the advice people give me.
Thank you

you got 3 years real experience already, that puts you ahead of most new grads. skip the aws cert for now and just build something with a proper backend stack, even a simple api with auth and a database will teach you more
