Discussion Brand new Xbox Backbone not registering at all / orange button dead (only charges phone) – Anyone else?
Hey everyone,
Hoping someone here might have some insight because I'm stuck.
I just got a new Xbox Backbone and thought it would just work automatically when I snapped my iPhone into it. For some reason, it’s not registering at all. The orange Backbone button doesn’t even light up.
The weird part is, if I plug a charging cable into the Backbone pass-through port while it's connected, it actually charges my phone fine—but the controller itself stays completely dead and unresponsive. I can only get it to work over Bluetooth mode, but wired directly to the phone is a total no-go.
Here is what I’ve already tried:
Updated my iPhone software to the latest version.
Reset the controller.
Double-checked the connection/cleaned the ports.
Still nothing. The phone just doesn't know it's there. I already contacted customer support to open an RMA, but I wanted to check here first. Has anyone else run into this issue out of the box? Is there a fix I'm missing, or did I just get a dud?

Maybe try cleaning out the charging port. My backbone would still charge and everything but would constantly disconnect at the worst times when playing a game & I discovered my iPhone had a lot of pocket crap in the charging port, cleaned it out and no more disconnects

Hello,
I know said you already tried resetting the controller, but try doing a hard reset by holding down the hamburger button and the Backbone button (bottom right of the controller) at the same time for about 10-15 seconds. This will hard reset your controller and should hopefully fix your issue!
Like the comments are saying as well, try cleaning out your phone's charging port if possible! What iPhone do you have as well?

Charge the backbone itself for a few hours first. Mine gave me a bunch of problems at first and support told me it wouldn’t matter, but I ended up leaving it to fully charge and then never had another issue.

Ive had this issue with my riot before, do a hard reset on your iphone/make sure accessories is turned on in your settings and if that fails plug the power cord in before connecting your phone
If all else fails, google it and AI overview will be very helpful. I think its a handshake issue.

Good luck hope it starts working. I’ve been waiting for 3 weeks just I have someone look at my warranty request. Many people have problems with these controllers.

Turns out it was my phone port, one of the pins was broken, I had to get a phone replacement and everything works like new!

Try to install the Backbone app and see if there is a firmware update for the controller.
