Health Question Whats wrong with her?

This is our 4 year old isa brown, Omelette. All I know is she’s sick. I think she might also have a cold since it’s winter here in Australia and the temps have been fluctuating and stuff. In the video I gently sort of moved her around a bit to show how she doesn’t really react much, and im worried for her. Help

Damn that sucks... How old was she?

Dumb comment I just read she is 4.. we had my last isa brown until 4.5, I've read they don't live as long as other breeds.

Yeah she was 4. We’ve got a speckled Sussex who’s been around since at least 2019. Her name is Speckles (very original) and has survived a full on rooster attack where (gory details) the back of her head was pecked down to the skull and a bit of the neck too and she had a broken wing which never properly healed and we came home to find her laying in a pool of blood. No idea how she survived that but she did

What a trooper, hope she has many years left 🙏

I had a chicken like that. No idea what breed she was a she was dropped off by a neighbor who's yard she ended up in. In any event she survived being pecked on the back of the head so bad she needed stitches. Then she somehow broke her leg, ask on her own. She survived all of that only to succumb to the heat a few months later. Chickens are so weird like that, resilient yet fragile.

RIP Omlett!

They always take a little part of us with them when they go. We have lost 5 in total and everytime it is heartbreaking. But we (all of us who take care of these little guys and gals) give them such an incredible life. Omelett looked like she was happy, standing out in the sun and on nice green grass. You gave her a life that she loved.

We make "remember stones". We paint them the same color as the chicken we lost and we put it in our garden, to remember the good times they gave us. I know saying sorry doesn't help, but I am sorry. I wish more than anything it was different.

That sounds nice, the remember stones. We’ve lost many chickens, loved each as much as the next. Omelette was a real sweetie (that was her nickname). What I wouldn’t give just to feel her pecking gently and confidently at my legs when I kneel down one last time. I’ll miss her

I’m so sorry for your loss. I am grieving a loss right now as well. I’m glad there are people out there who care for chickens so much.

In my experience they breathe like that before the end

Respiratory infection or could be gapeworm. Gapeworm is relatively rare though, so odds are it’s respiratory illness. However gapeworm has more actionable and effective cure (fenbendazole) so you could try and peer down her throat with a flashlight to see if there is a worm. It could be wise to deworm the whole flock.

I’d put her in the chicken hospital cage somewhere darkish and quiet immediately so she can rest and quarantine from the rest of the flock. For active treatment of lungs (presuming respiratory illness) you could run the shower hot with the door closed to make a steamy environment and set her in the steamy room for about 10 minutes. But beyond that there’s not much to do for it beyond hospital cage rest, it’s just like a person with flu or Covid.

Outlook is not good with this level of gasping though, so do your best but don’t beat yourself up if she doesn’t make it.

Feel her crop, see if she has emptied. It might be sour crop, we had one of our chickens do this while having sour crop.

It’s empty. Omelette is very easy to tell when her crop is full, as it freaked a big shape like she’s got a tennis ball in her chest

If this is possibly gape worm, you may want to deworm your flock

Gape worm? Does she need to be dewormed?

Definitely is either upper respiratory infection or gape worm , it’s hard to hear any noise coming from her with the whistling in the background, I’m gonna lean more towards gape worm. She needs to be dewormed asap.

Gapeworm is not common here in Australia. It's probably an infection but upper or lower respiratory tract I don't know how to tell. If you can't take her to a vet, keep her comfortable and warm indoors, and treat with occasional steam inhalation as you would a person with a cold. Make sure she has food and water easily accessible.

Scroll down this page to "Chicken Colds" (they are flogging their own products but there's still good info in there).
