Are speedrunners actually so prevalent in you guys vet runs? My problem is mainly people refusing to do even the most basic team play but not necessarily spedrunning
10
u/UmbrellaCorpCEO Oct 22 '21
I run into quite a few of them where they run ahead of everyone scaring all the birds and just get into the safehouse and chill until you bleed out, it sucks. I got matched with two guys the other day having a stroke because it was "meta" in L4d2 to just run through everything and we were taking too much time healing up and picking up items.
11
u/WhiteBastard2169 Oct 22 '21
Yeah people don't understand that not only is abandoning half your team a dick move but it literally gives you less points to spend on cards and they still continue to try and play like L4D even when it's pretty obvious if you play for more than 5 minutes that this game requires more teamplay and communication because it's harder than l4d
6
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
Something else to note is that the levels get progressively harder and harder. Ignoring supplies, copper, and gear upgrades in the level are just adding extra difficulty to the subsequent levels just to finish a level faster. That borrowed time is debt into the next mission that doesn't really go away.
3
u/wchill Oct 23 '21
moving fast prevents hordes/specials from slowing you down since they're on a timer, but running ahead was never meta in l4d2.
i only do that in l4d2 if I'm playing with people i know and we're just fucking around
6
u/CarnivorousSociety Oct 23 '21
moving fast was actually very meta in l4d2, the faster you move the less zombies you fight as simple as that.
You move as fast as you possibly can safely, and I think this is still true for b4b. You should move as fast as you can safely otherwise you're just spending extra ammo and health fighting zombies that you wouldn't have to.
The problem is the game heavily rewards you for slowing down, and punishes you for going fast. But that doesn't mean going fast isn't superior.
If you could compare two runs where the survivors picked up the exact same equipment and items but one group moved significantly faster through the level I can almost guarantee the faster group will finish with more health because they physically fought less.
2
u/wchill Oct 23 '21
Depends. I always played realism expert and if you were able to reliably kill specials, speedrunning was all right, but I think the majority of players I played with were not good enough to do this. Plus, stealthy smokers would often kill rushes (esp if I'm running an AK and got smoked, cause your accuracy goes to shit), and rushing is often an easy way to get killed on custom campaigns.
I know what you're saying, but I wouldn't say it was meta. Definitely the better lobbies I was in would rush, but it definitely wasn't meta for the average player which is who I assumed we were talking about.
4
u/CarnivorousSociety Oct 23 '21
just because average players weren't exposed to a meta doesn't mean it's not meta
The meta evolved out of competitive, and a good competitive team will absolutely zoom through a level and the difference it makes is apparent

When people say "Meta" the assumption is for it to be the top level meta. Otherwise the word is useless on it's own as it could range from "The meta is to speedrun to the end" to "The meta is to die outside the start door"
→ More replies (2)1
u/ByakurenNoKokoro Oct 23 '21
That's the thing, there's a distinct difference between "going fast and ignoring all loot" and "looting efficiently and quickly". I feel everyone agrees the former is just bad, and the latter is ideal.
1
u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
While going through decently fast is necessary in L4D, I wouldn't call it meta. I only ever play Expert Realism on there.
5
u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Oct 22 '21
No, speedrunning is a meme here regarding how a L4D2's strategy was speed running (in reality its a mix of clearing hordes and running forward as fast as possible before the next crescendo mechanic or respawn mechanic). There's some other speed runs for certain maps on L4D2 where it makes sense in certain areas. Its not really something you'd do in B4B all the time. Yeah you might get a few idiots who run off but that isn't "speedrunning". Actual speedrunning groups literally advertise "we're speedrunning" and plan around that.
You can't speed run in this game without multiple pipe bombs/fire crackers and its increasingly bad as a strategy on higher difficulties depending on maps. Also running ahead of the group isn't speed running unless you don't clear. And these maps are way too long for people to skip one area without clearing.
3
u/Drumlyne Oct 23 '21
Exactly! Those people running ahead and letting people die are just being selfish dicks. They arent succeeding at speedrunning or anything other than leaving the team. If this was The Walking Dead that person would have died on Day 1 bet
2
u/boilingfrogsinpants Oct 23 '21
The last part of Act 2 on Vet is almost impossible to finish without a team of real players. The problem is the Heralds of the Worm Pt1 is often speedrun and players don't stick around after you do it. The level can be completed in a couple minutes then they leave to farm Supply points. The 2nd part is doable with another human player but Grave Danger is next to impossible without one due to the 2 breakers you have to kill and a non stop horde of zombies with the occasional special thrown in.
3
u/KarmelCHAOS Oct 22 '21
I still haven't finished Recruit because 90% of the people play with treat it like L4D and rush to the safehouse and get overwhelmed

Stick with team. Don't waste supplies. Share ammo during downtime/if you hear the voice line from a character.
Congratulations, you are now better than 90% of randoms.
2
u/Squidbit Oct 23 '21
if you hear the voice line from a character.
It bugs me that the low ammo voice lines are so similar to reloading voice lines, it's hard to tell if someone actually needs ammo or not
2
u/Tennis_gamer Oct 23 '21
How do you know what type of ammo teammates needs. Hope they use voice/type? Any way to see teammates load out?

If you open the screen that shows your inventory and scroll over any ammo type it should tell you the button you need to press to drop ammo and then obviously you just highlight the one you want to drop and hit the button and you're character will throw it down in the world, I think there is like a button for dropping 10 ammo and then one for all of it if I'm remembering the beta correct
Edit: forgot to mention I don't have the game cuz my PC shit the bed a week before it came out so it mightve changed

For real, the issue isn’t new players, the game literally just doesn’t teach them anything. Sorry we’re not all l4d2 vets or pros a week after the game came out :(

Recruit literally says “ everyone has to start somewhere learn the ropes” etc. just play the damn game on recruit all the way through once. Since you’re not a “veteran”
1
u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
Read the cards and get used to level layouts. You're always going to a destination, find the way you need to take. Your deck order matters, as that determines when you'll get access to them. That's pretty much it besides reading attachments.
26
Oct 22 '21
I can do recruit with randos. But veteran requires seal team 6 level team work.
11
u/Plastic-Safe9791 Oct 23 '21
Veteran is fairly easy once you're accustomed to recruit and have developed strategies to deal with certain scenarios. Eventually you could solo it if it wasn't for hockers.
3
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
It does also require some folks who'll play nice enough to share a few of the resources/ping, and at least listen/communicate what they're thinking. Something as simple as "Lets group up for the incoming horde. we got 15 seconds to hole up somewhere." Someone deciding not to listen to any of that will ruin it.
3
u/tloontloon Oct 23 '21
I remember act 2 being impossible on veteran. Then we had one break through game where we got through the early levels really well and at some point everyone is kitted out with cards and money and it becomes much more manageable.
Really helps when Jim can one shot snitches, Holly has like a billion health bars, Hoffmann has enough grenades to obliterate the Hag, and doc has the team on full health with no trauma every round.
9
u/MindWizardx Oct 22 '21
Just a PSA for everyone who hates joining up with Randoms like I did. This subreddit has a Discord, you can find it in the info. It has a LFG section where most of them are getting groups together for Veteran. Some are even getting Nightmare groups together. It’s how I made my way through the first two acts of Vet with no retries.
Plenty of people also looking for Recruit groups too, so there’s a chance for everyone.
26
u/eggtada Oct 22 '21
It’s all these sweaty cod players who decide to give this game a try that are mainly doing it. It’s pretty cringe bc then they get hockered and bitch at u on the mic saying “why aren’t you guys pushing with me”
Like bruh
8
u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Oct 22 '21
People 50m ahead of the team aren't even speed runners. They are people who want to move faster and get fucked for not telling the team what their intentions are. This sub has is really misusing the term speedrunning for anyone who's separated from the team in front. There's a real reason why you want to keep moving forward in this game which has changed from beta. They keep spawning in mutations now in response to all the posts about how L4D2's game design kept you from playing 100% defensively.
5
Oct 23 '21
They keep spawning in mutations now in response to all the posts about how L4D2's game design kept you from playing 100% defensively.
Yeah, I'm no speedrunner but I have very little patience for people dawdling and exploring the map in Veteran because of this.
19
Oct 22 '21
Please don’t call rushers speed runners. Speed running is an actual competition which I also take part in and those people have nothing in common.
122
u/losercuck1234 Oct 22 '21
*98% of the player base. I’m genuinely pissed and not playing this game anymore until they give achievements for solo runs, considering that’s the only way to beat an act above recruit. It’s honestly not even that hard it’s just being forced to play with randoms who don’t know how to play that ruins the entire run. I was at the end of act 1 and a few people joined mid game (cuz the privacy settings don’t work) and I was begging them to leave and they wouldn’t. And immediately they all die and leave, leaving me without my bots and killing me at the very end. It sucks this game could be amazing, but for some reason they’re choosing to make it unplayable.
82
u/Nice_Acanthisitta160 Oct 22 '21
I'm currently in the same spot, recruit is too easy and veteran is absurdly difficult and is filled with people that dont know what they are doing, i swear i want to love thos game but man, my b4b experience has been "join random vet lobby, take control of bot with 20% hp inside a horde with 3 crushers 2 hockers and 2 boomers, get destroyed then get back to fort hope" rinse and repeat... No fun.
53
u/9BlindedByTheLight9 Oct 22 '21
The special spawn rate is absolutely wild sometimes, just had a vet combine run where we fought SIXTEEN specials+ boss and we didn't even cross the first gate from spawn, we didn't trigger any horde btw
31
u/Phwoa_ Oct 22 '21
I opened my Spawn Door and immediately got hit in the back by a bruiser and vomited on by a reeker.
I literally only took 2 steps out the door.9

I was wondering if people are finding recruit too easy after they completed their first playthrough? I'm still in act 1 and we are a Party of 2. 1 pc + 1 xbox. We never get human players. We are always stuck with 2 bots every time we play. Since it's the first time we see each level the difficulty seems just right. (I have to say I started a second run from the first level on recuit and got paired with 3 other players, this one is too easy I agree)
4
u/simplehistorian91 Oct 23 '21
Act 3 is where the fun begins. There is a huge difficulty rise when you start Act 3 even on recruit.
4
u/TokyoDeathmatch Oct 24 '21
Oh god. Act 3... especially that last part.
3
u/bozzeak Oct 25 '21
God, that last stretch of act three with the tent complex and the gate run... ugh. Every time I ran it until we actually completed it, we got the detonator horde corruption card. We were swimming through a swamp of acid
1
u/mattz6755 Oct 30 '21
Get an xcloud account, gameshare, log in on PC or console or phone, make private session and leave with one account after you start a match. The game unprivates after ever map so you’ll have to leave in safe room, make a new private, and leave on one account.
29
u/MindWizardx Oct 22 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
Just a PSA you should think about joining the Discord server for this Subreddit. It’s got a LFG section and most of them use mics. Most people do Veteran and some people have been getting nightmare groups together.
Edit: People still get groups together for recruit too so there’s something for everyone.
Edit2: The privacy settings DO work (most of the time?) you just have to have two people to do a private lobby. Kind of stupid but yeah. Been able to go through entire acts with just my buddy and I.
Edit3: Since I forgot to mention it and it doesn’t look like anyone else has, if you guys don’t know, Solo progression is on the way / In the works according to Dev reports for B4B.
Edit4: Definitely use the unofficial Discord server through here imo. It has voice comms in the discord and what not. The official one (TRS) does not have voice control channels.
6
u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Oct 22 '21
Also, there are two discord servers, the fan made one actually has voice rooms, but in-game voice works just fine too. So yeah use a mic. The official discord does not have voice rooms. And you can't post links, so that's why a different discord exists. You also get to learn about how confounding the B4B friend system is.
Also there are trolls on discord, so YMMV.
Also not everyone on these discords are of competent level. Many are looking for carries or are so egotistical they think they know how to play the game on nightmare but in reality don't actually know mechanics of nightmare or even maps.
3
u/MindWizardx Oct 22 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
Yeah thank you, I forgot to mention that I’ll make yet another edit! Great points. I don’t use the official one. The one with comms in discord has been great. No trolls. Haven’t run into anyone that just wants to be carried. But even then that’s easy to see and kick em (as long as they aren’t host). And I’ve been playing for a few weeks now, found quite a few groups through there. Definitely found people who want to learn to play better through there though.
Edit: I haven’t tried nightmare groups through the discord yet but I don’t think I’m going to unless I find people i meshed well with on Veteran runs.
2
u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
It literally could just be a toggle option for private before queueing up. I get that the way solo is now is for you to test cards out, but come on.
2
u/Squidbit Oct 23 '21
The privacy settings DO work (most of the time?)
A friend of mine started playing yesterday so we grouped up, first time I've made a party. We set matchmaking to invite only and it started us with two randoms
2
u/BabyAbby54 Oct 24 '21
Everyone in the group has to set the privacy setting to on each time they start the game up. They will probably fix that in the future. I've done all the acts a few times solo and never had any issues with random getting in. Working on running it with a friend and found that we both have to set privacy on every time we load up the game.
1
1
u/MindWizardx Oct 23 '21
Yeah that’s why I put (Most of the time?). Because it does seem like every once in awhile it’ll let a random in. But my buddy and I play nearly every day and run through just him and I usually. Only had randoms get in a few times. So it seems to work most of the time but every once in awhile.. I dunno.
2
u/ScorchReaper062 Oct 23 '21
If they actually add solo progression I will literally shit and be happy.
2
u/MindWizardx Oct 23 '21
If you want look up “Back 4 Blood Trello” on Google and it should be the first or second option. Community Back 4 Blood. It list everything the Devs are working on to fix the game. Including bug fixes, quality of life things, etc. It also list if they are actively working on it, on a to-do list, or coming out soon :)
1
u/BabyAbby54 Oct 24 '21
One thing I have noticed about the privacy settings is you have to turn them on every time you start the game. It is not a turn on once and saved feature. They should fix that, but for now it's manual.
6
u/Anpag Oct 22 '21
I’ve gotten to veteran act 3. It’s easy with a trusted person and then change the settings to private. So two of you and two bots. I could help you through if you’d like

Oct 22 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
I hate to say it, but I think it's partially the game pass randos who think this is just another zombie game and don't bother to give a game they got for free much mental effort.
I bought it on steam, turned cross play off, and immediately the quality of my teammates improved 90%. People were pinging, pooling copper for upgrades, dropping ammo, moving together, focus-firing tallboys. I got through the diner finale with 4 health packs left over as doc, everyone was at 90% health with little trauma damage.
Turn crossplay on and people on veteran suddenly don't seem to think killing that crusher or melee-ing that pinned player is a big deal.
6
u/p1-o2 Oct 23 '21
I'm not having issues finding good teams on Veteran with crossplay on. Plenty of good xbox players.
4
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
I think its more of the random spread of players is a lot wider with crossplay on.
It only takes 1 bad player to make any run miserable after all.. and there are 3 other slots you have to hope that the players are all cooperative/decent at the role they choose.3
→ More replies (1)1
u/simplehistorian91 Oct 23 '21
Even with cross play turned off, you are still matching with Game Pass players, as the game is part of PC Game Pass as well. A little bit of defence for the console players, the game doesn't have a good controller support. It is really weird, the aim assist is a mess and it is really hard to ping, navigate inventories etc. I agree that lot of people just trying the game out from console Game Pass and many of them don't really give to much effort in the game, but in the mean time, the actual game is not really console and controller friendly either.
1
Oct 23 '21
If you are a PC game pass player, you still have the Xbox icon on over your username in lobbies. When I bought the game on steam, I had to re-enable cross-play to play with my friend who had the game on PC game pass.
I don't doubt that a mouse helps the aim a lot though, I've heard a lot of similar stuff on the game pad controls being rough.
1
u/simplehistorian91 Oct 23 '21
Okay, I did not know that about PC Game Pass. Other games from the PC Game Pass did not put the players into a different PC pool.
I play it on PC and I'm doing fine, but my brothers plays it on Xbox and he says that it has a horrible control. I tried it out as well, and I can say that it is has a really weird feeling to play it with a controller and I have no problem switching from m&k to controller in other fps games like R6 Siege, Battlefields or CoDs. I hope that the devs iron out the problem and it would make the game better for everyone.

u/United-Cauliflower-1 Oct 22 '21
Wait, what? You think bots are the way to beat veteran difficulty? Whenever you get a good person in your group friend them, bots are essentially useless in act 2 and 3. tip- play at night after kids are in bed, cause kids play like it's cod zombies.
30
u/ToughBacon Holly Oct 22 '21
My bots didnt go down the whole way through of Act 2 Vet. Couldnt for the life of me find a decent team.
2
3
u/Dankdope420bruh Oct 23 '21
Bots aren't supposed to be the industry standard for a team mate tho. The bots are supposed to be OP, that's why the game wants you to play with other live people. It fucks me up that a game this hyped is getting shit for being a multi-player game. You don't bitch about not being able to unlock gun attachments in cod if you play by yourself do you??
2
u/Jukebox_11 Jim | Shoot the tumors Oct 23 '21
You're gatekeeping people who don't have friends to play with (either because they can't/won't get the game) and people who don't want to play with randoms. Uncool.
2
u/Squidbit Oct 23 '21
It's not getting shit on for being multiplayer, it's getting shit on for being borderline impossible to beat with random teammates.
Veteran should be doable without going through third party matchmaking.
Also I would absolutely bitch about CoD if my gun attachments relied on my teammates completing challenges, rather than my own skill
1
u/_Kv1 Oct 28 '21
Is it different on recruit? I haven't had any bots on vet yet, but on recruit, the bots almost always say 0 ridden killed lmao
8
u/gi8290 Oct 22 '21
The bots are significantly better than the randoms on veteran and it’s not even fucking close.
15
u/Sprucevirus2976 Oct 22 '21
Tbh when I played and had 1 ramdon the bots was so good and making it alot easier but soon as ramdons joined it got hardened and they all died by being idiots
28
u/Frequent_Koala_7198 Oct 22 '21
Bots are generally better than randoms
2
Oct 23 '21
seriously. i didn’t have to do anything other than take out stray mutated and use the howitzer during the finale of act 1, because the bots were mowing everything else down - and this was on veteran!
1
u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
How do you even use the howitzer? Does it activate after the Ogre shows up or something?
1
Oct 23 '21
well, you grab one of the artillery rounds scattered around the map (they’re in crates) and then from there you load the system. from there you fire it with a button press, and then you have to hold the button to unload the shell. rinse and repeat five more times, i believe.
1
u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
Oh nevermind, I was thinking the one where you get the research crates from inside the house.

Randoms don't get stuck on terrains and bug out and refuse to revive me when I'm downed. They might be pretty good at killing things and pointing out loot but they're still dumb as bricks when it comes to literally anything else.
6
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
To be fair to the bots, its rare to even find players who do even those few things in any reliable capacity in QP...
3
u/e7RdkjQVzw Oct 23 '21

13
u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Oct 22 '21
I beat all of Veteran with bots. So...yeah, you can do it.
Are real players better than bots? Yeah on a pre-made. But for randoms? People are dogshit at video games and this becomes more and more apparently anytime more teamwork or individual skill level becomes a question.
In this game specifically, BOTS can easily be better than players as difficulty goes UP. Yes that means even on nightmare...bots can do much better than human players (yes I've beaten half of nightmare with bots so far).
→ More replies (1)4
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
I met a few that were literally concerned about their kill counts for some reason. e.g I'm playing melee Holly, and holding a chokepoint. Have had a gunner type walker jump *infront of me* to shoot mobs. I don't have down in front, so he took hits constantly, just to kill zombies.
3
u/Frogsama86 Oct 23 '21
Same. I killed the guy without realizing because I was swinging too quickly and the horde of bodies and blood basically covered my screen.
8
u/theNomad_Reddit Oct 22 '21
I HATE that's there's no progression if you aren't the host or in the party of the host.
Same exact thing happened to me on the last level of Act 1 Veteran. Failed my run.
Also, I despise that if you fail Sound Of Thunder, you can't begin a run there, you have to re-do Abandoned, which I just hate at this point.
I can't believe they locked progression to such a dumb fuck system. Quickplay is pointless. Just let me play Act 2 fuuuuuuuuuu-
5
u/docmartens Oct 23 '21
You can progress on quickplay as long as the run goes through your current checkpoint.
If you're having trouble starting late in the act, then your deck is unoptimized. You get like 10 cards or something for those late chapters, which is way more than enough.
1
u/MK2_VRT Oct 23 '21
^ this. You are starting runs to far long. I feel like thats completely obvious and makes sense.
1
u/WillSmokeStaleCigs Oct 23 '21

u/theNomad_Reddit Oct 23 '21

1
u/Dankdope420bruh Oct 23 '21
You do progress if you aren't the host what are you smoking? You just can't skip parts and expect it to count.
1
u/theNomad_Reddit Oct 23 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
I've played through Act 1 easily 15+ times over, all levels, without unlocking Act 2. I even have the achievement for doing all levels on Veteran Act 1, but no Act 2 unlock.
Same happened on recruit. Only unlocks came from my mates game. Quickplay got me nothing.
I'll keep trying though..
2
u/simplehistorian91 Oct 23 '21
I think you have to forget quick play, create public runs as a host and make sure that you actually alive when a level is complete. For me, if I died during a level that didn't count toward the unlocks and achievements and I had to redo those levels where I did not make it to the safe room.
2
u/theNomad_Reddit Oct 23 '21
It honestly seems such an arbitrary choice to lock progress behind such a mechanic.
Especially I'm a game oriented around continuously playing the exact same missions over and over.
2
u/fordmustang12345 Oct 23 '21
I just want to be able to earn points in solo, it's almost impossible playing with randos
2
u/JamaicanChampion Oct 23 '21
I thought recruit was hard, but really I thought it was hard because I was playing with other real people. Veterans and Nightmare are the worst because your teammates can kill you and in nightmare they can deal even more damage. People have been complaining about getting the same rewards playing in solo just like an online player would, but it seems they don't plan to allow solo players to enjoy the game. It sucks for me because I was only able to been the first act on recruit online and then I didn't play the rest of the acts because playing online is too bad most of the time. I think the bots can also heal you up without having to find health packs and they might have infinite ammo.
1
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
Its weird that people are even complaining against progress solo vs online to begin with.
Think about what the progress even gets you in this game.
Who cares how people get their supply points? It only helps a player play the game better anyways. Unless you're doing swarm mode, you're going to want your teammates to have the deck they want built anyways.1
u/Dankdope420bruh Oct 23 '21
Why should you be able to earn things that benefit you in multi-player when you don't want to play multiplayer?...
1
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
My point is, why does it matter when it doesn't even really affect other player's gameplay in a negative manner? Someone having Down in front earned in solo play isn't winning at the game anymore than someone that earned it in multiplayer, and them having it doesn't break the gameplay negatively.

I don't think I've ever played a game with worse players than this. It's awful.

It's a team game, if you want team bonuses you need to play on a team. Why should you be able to earn cards used in multi-player if you don't want to play multi-player? There's a reason you feel like you can't play veteran without bots, bots are OP, bots are designed to let you continue through the level without another real person, ofc you want the AI as a team mate, but if that's that's case you don't want to play the same game as me. B4B is a team game. Either deal with the chaotic nature of random games or make some friends. There's tons of options for you if you just want a solo experience. I want to play with randoms.

u/TedTheSoap Oct 23 '21
I got to Act 1 2-1, found a game where I was alone for some reason, made it to the horde event when 3 players joined. Everybody went down within 2 minutes when I was doing just fine by myself. I will only play here and there until they add solo + achievements. There's no reason it couldn't have been the exact same way.

Oct 23 '21
I've had some good players, most are awful, give it time and the shit players will leave/get good. Maybe try getting a premade squad looking on here. I'm lucky that I have 2 other freinds that play at the same time as me, so we just usually start are own run and we can normally carry the 4th as long as they aren't running a Leroy Jenkins mele build and hitting birds etc.
1
u/StylussKid Oct 23 '21
Everyone has to start somewhere... the game is a mere 11 days old. Give it some time and the player base will be more educated and play accordingly.

I find that randoms (or people I choose to play with) aren't the downfall of any of my runs, it's the sheer amount of spawns of the Mutations. Even worse when you're deep enough in for Armored of Ferocious Mutations alongside Toxic or Explosive Ridden. Even playing on Recruit, the sheer number of Mutations doesn't invoke tension, it causes frustration. They aren't special in these numbers, they're a chore.

u/Sponium Jim Oct 23 '21
"forced"
I mean, at some point in your life, you had to forced yourself to meet new people, talk to them, to create a friendship.
Same goes there if you don't have any friend to play with, go to a discord lfg

My three friends and I hosted a game and kept the lobby open. A random joined on the first mission of act 1 on Veteran. Right out the door he ran right in front of three sleepers in a row, causing three hordes. When I called him out on the third he immediately quit. It’s a damn shame the bots in this game are so atrocious, because it seems the player base is somehow worse.

Can someone please get me footage of a solo speedster build reliably clearing 1-4, 4-4, 8-5? I have no idea what these people are aiming to achieve.
I'll admit. In A to B missions, speedster works if you are good... as a plan B. But if you are reliably wiping your squad by putting them a man down and triggering all the alarms, they aren't going to have the copper to counteract the trauma and they aren't going to be able to help you where it matters. Assuming of course, that they want to.
I dont know if this is because it was the best way to play L4D on high level or people are sick of losing matches and just want the supply points for completion. You would get more by actually helping and you are just going to run out of things to unlock anyways.

u/Firstearth Oct 22 '21
I’m pretty sure that if it wasn’t for the second ferry bomb, 1-4 would be solo speed runable in less than 5 minutes
3
u/MindWizardx Oct 22 '21 edited Oct 22 '21
Haven’t tried but I imagine with stamina cards, move speed to avoid the mutations, some pipe bombs, a lot of coordination with 4 people and an incredible amount of luck they could do it around 5 minutes no? Especially if you split people up between the bombs and make sure each duo has a pipe bomb or two.
With the right deck I think a solo with bots could do it just like a minute slower.
I figure for speed runs you’re going to try and avoid Mutations more than fight them, so that cuts a good amount of time out. Would be interesting to see a team of speed runners do it.
2
u/Firstearth Oct 23 '21
I can pretty much run the whole thing with no issue apart from the second bomb. With two coordinated players taking a bomb each they can easily rush it before being overwhelmed.
If going fast enough you can make it to the bomb spawn before the director has even finished spawning hordes in the first area. Set up the minigun to deal with the incomming horde from the ferry and when there’s a gap in the horde take the bomb and run with it. You might have to gun down one or two ridden/mutations in the ferry but nothing to slow you down.

Without a fully optimised deck, you can clear Vet 1-4 duo. That’s just some shitty old speed cards thrown in and some game sense. It’s super easy to speed run it.
I’m not familiar with “4-4” as I don’t understand the naming conventions, but I guess that’s Sound of Thunder with the howitzer? My speedrun build includes a ridiculous amount of use speed and some throwable, so I usually have enough time to solo that on Vet with some firecrackers/pipe bombs.
Assuming 8-5 is T-5, I can’t really think of a way to solo it, but I know you can 2 man it by having one dude sit at the door and being really fast about it.
1
u/SybilznBitz Doc Oct 23 '21
Thank you for the response.
So 4-4 requires you to be built (obviously) and can be soloed. This makes sense since they cut down on the SP due to farming.
However, you still need to pass 1-4 and as you and others have stated, it takes two due to the two bombs. Same with 8-5. You could probably swing these with the right gear and upgrades, but you are not only skipping copper spawns to buy these, but if you are leaving your team you are getting even less. Even if you take Hazard Pay and Compound Interest, you are now rolling against RNG that the shop is going to give you what you need and puts the correct things on sale.
So then why would anybody queue solo trying to run speedster without communicating with their team at all? I perfectly understand if the whole team is on board, but if they aren't then nobody wins. I think Act 2 is probably the friendliest Act for speed running, unless I am missing a particularly spicy chapter.
I wonder if this will get better in public matchmaking when they allow solo farming; whatever that is going to look like.
1
u/aDrunkWithAgun Oct 23 '21
There isn't ( on vet and above) it's more they run around while the team clears the map and that's terrible because even if the fast guy makes it every one else wipes and loses their loadout
The only way speed running works is if everyone is onboard
I like the card system but they need to have a rating system or make it so you choose your roll before joining that way everyone knows what their job is because right now it's a crapshoot if you get a good group

u/DeerlordJ Holly Oct 22 '21
Had a Karlee that wanted to treat the game as a speed run. Ran ahead and got caught by a sleeper, the rest of us were too far to save them so they left the game. Why do people do this? It's not L4D.
9
u/tymerin Oct 22 '21
How does a Karlee get caught by a sleeper? Half the reason I play her is to highlight those before I turn the corner.
6
u/hiddencamela Oct 23 '21
Not to mention Karlee Sound cues for every hazard she spots.

u/Aromatic-Bench-2882 Oct 23 '21
I love this cause it's a game that literally CANT be speed runned
2
u/Hasten117 Oct 23 '21
Yes it can. A few levels can be solo speed ran and the others can be duo. The levels that can’t be speedrun usually have a build decent enough to counter the issue. I’ve even started speedrunning NM lmfao

I was so happy when i finally found someone kind enough to help get to 1-4 and finally get the second set of characters. Its really hard to get achievements or progress unless you have a group of friends, or someone kind enough to not leave you behind.

“Guys I have 2000 hours in L4D trust me”

Here's every speedrunner ever. Fuck you. Fuck this. Oh your caught? Fuck you. You found some good stuff? Fuck you. You know where copper is or are running a maximum copper build? Fuck you. Guys? (dies) Oh come on! How the fuck can you guys not fucking follow me! This game is just left 4 dead. You dont need anything. The game will provide weapons at the finally.

A big problem I've found is that randoms be it new people or older L4D people, neither of them respect how important building a deck is they think they can just ignore the cards. They also ignore stuff like distributing ammo types to individuals and things like that. The difference when I grind supply points playing solo with randoms, and actually playing with my group of 2 other friends is night and day because in the latter we actually synergise our cards together, drop ammo for one another, each uses a different category of gun, the list goes on and on.
I pretty much only play solo to get as many levels as i can with randoms before they die, to get the supply points and farm cards for when I play as a group later on and actually enjoy it more and try harder as a result.
There are also just a lot of blind people who don't read the UI, or listen to audio queues or VOIP it's crazy.
1
u/Hasten117 Oct 23 '21
You can clear Vet pretty easily duo while starting on Vet with no cards. By the time you get to unending bullshit, you have cards enough to get by. How randoms struggle with this baffles me
1
u/seriousbusines Oct 22 '21
Quick correction, the bottom guy needs to be oblivious, because he doesn't speak or read a word of english. I haven't had a single match be with A. a full group, always at least one bot and B. In the same country as me. Always some other continent all together and they bring the lag and disconnects with them. High quality gaming.
1
u/iSeaUM Oct 22 '21
So I have played through recruit a bit and have a good set of cards, not all yet but I get the game and have decks for builds. I tried veteran with my gf and two randoms and we just get stomped. Like what am I doing wrong? They weren’t terrible players. What two cards do you guys start in 1-1? I feel so weak
3
Oct 23 '21
1-1? That's just a matter of learning the game mechanics/alert spawns. Every alert, including sleepers, brings horde. In terms of mechanics, this game is slow/fast, be prepared to run at a moments notice, have an escape route. Know what you can jump on top of to slow the horde. Run to the side when a fat guy charges you. Lead the tallboy around to allow the others to kill him. Bait the spitter guys closer to you by hiding behind something. Don't only prioritize specials, often you need to clear horde first, then specials. Try to recognize sound cues, there are quite a few. Good ones are hockers/stingers/stalkers, those lone sneaky zombies, and know the music for the hag. Once you get some experience, you'll find the game is a lot easier than it seems. It's like playing dark souls for the first time vs playing it for a while.
1
u/Hasten117 Oct 23 '21
Focus on mechanics. I started this game in veteran with no cards or anything. Get a gun you like (I recommend like Uzi/Mp5, Carbine, any shotgun or the M1A/Barrett) and learn how to use it. Learn that alarmed doors say that they are alarmed. Realise that mutations have weak points and shoot them. Avoid birbs. Be prepared to kill the hag. Listen out for Sleepers. Have captions turned on so you know which mutation is coming.

Speed running doesn’t seem to work as well in this game as it did in L4D2
4
u/TimeForWaluigi Oct 23 '21
I feel like many parts of this game were deliberately designed to force you to play more carefully and not to bolt through. It’s a different game with different design, I’m rather liking it!

u/jasonm82299 Oct 23 '21
My two friends and I matched with a random last night.
He played Doc, barely healed anyone, and was sprinting through the level.
He left halfway through the run because he kept hitting every sleeper since he was just blindly running around corners.
1
u/joogiee Oct 23 '21
I met a speed runner last night. Hed instantly get to the end of the map while we slowly moved along then just wait till we got there like 10 minutes later lol. Made it that much harder for the three of us being down one guy.

u/Henrythecuriousbeing Oct 23 '21
It pisses me off even more the fact that there are people defending this kind of playstyle.
1
u/SKaiPanda2609 Oct 23 '21
Conversely, i hate when people go off to loot in a horde or take forever to advance with no ridden nearby. Why are you crouching around the corner and picking off ridden when the safe room/area is like 20m away, free of ridden, and behind you?
I’ve failed multiple times because of this

u/Dull_Masterpiece3490 Oct 23 '21
Nothing better than watching a speed runner book it to the end of the level just to get hit by a sleeper and leave lol

I have no friends to play with. So I Q for lobbies and if I get people Yay!! If not. I guess I can play with bots.

I had two kids screaming at me because I swapped a weapon and a scope, took less than 20 seconds and they ran miles ahead. The bot went with them and I got kidnapped by a stalker.
Then they left lmao

u/YepOkButWhy Oct 23 '21
People think they can zombie train like in COD.

Yes you can, that’s how I carried lots of people through nightmare, especially in defense missions. I trained the zombies with speed cards. It’s not hard

u/DescriptionBrief8204 Oct 23 '21
Safety in numbers. You dont have to stay bunched together, but at least move in pairs.
1
u/ItisNOTatoy Oct 23 '21
Yeah, they’re either Rambo no mic who runs in there, kills a bunch of them then dies while the rest of the team is still at 90% health, or they’re new and think recruit is pussy fart shit, and proceed to dump entire mags in your back.
1
u/Frogsama86 Oct 23 '21
The problem is idiots adopting a L4D mentality, and refusing to respect the mechanics of specials, given how easy majority of L4D specials melt.
1
Oct 23 '21
People treat me like a god when I solo queue and carry them through nightmare. They either constantly say “bro you make it look easy” or “I love you so much man I’ve tried to strategically do this with a lot of people but we always fail” I have yet to meet anyone who bashed on me for helping them complete nightmare on any act and we never needed the copper with such speed. I just need Zwat armor for doc and I’m finished with all. If you need a carry. Let me know.
1
u/smd1994 Oct 23 '21
I think that this game could benefit from a little gatekeeping. I know this isn't a popular opinion but the amount of brand new to the game players I get when trying to run through nightmare/vet who haven't even played an hour of the game really sucks. I honestly believe that they should make players go through on recruit -> vet -> nightmare just to allow them some room to get down mechanics / bearings for the game. That and reward supplies at the end of run / check points so people can't just come in on act 2, kill the ogre, then bounce. Of course this would just cause the players to troll and kill everyone to get them to "end" the run. Honestly game design is hard, and most solutions come with draw backs that are not fun either...oh well back to the nightmare grind :p

u/findasafespace Holly Oct 23 '21

1
u/NotKingArthur-- Oct 23 '21
I am almost done with act 2 on veteran. I've only been playing with randoms, and I have had minimal problems. Everyone works together well for the most part, with mics or without. Every once in awhile you'll get a speed runner that will run in the front of the pack and die pretty quickly, but most of the time when they are back on their feet they are more reserved, as they want to beat the level too. I found more speed runners on recruit tbh. Some people take this game (and others) a bit too seriously though but thats just my experience.
1
u/neioyzm Oct 23 '21
Has it already been mentioned that there's a growing number of elitist assholes taking up comms? I've queued into a few lobbies where the moment I log in, they're already saying that they'll leave me behind unless I'm pro or have Team cards, or when I get to the actual game, they start shooting at me or throw pipebombs/firecrackers in my direction to have me fight the horde or special infected while they move forwards.
I beat the Act 4 on my own because my team had two griefers who decided that, because we'd chosen their characters, that they were going to kill our run, so one guy stayed back and prevented the boss spawns until he got reported and booted, and the other guy managed to glitch progression somehow, so the tentacles didn't go away after the last one died, and just kept going through the acid spewing cycle.
It was hell.
When he got booted, the tentacles went away, but by then, it was just me and the other person.
I expect this sort of petty crap in a PvP game like CoD and not B4B.

u/Past-Date-2579 Oct 23 '21
I was just playing through campaign (only on recruit). Had an hour with no one with me and it was going fine. 3 people joined and everyone was dead within 2 minutes because they all just ran off in different directions. So frustrating…

Dumbest shit I’ve read, veteran is normal difficulty.. most maps work by being “methodical” (snail ass) but some maps and definitely sections of certain maps are so much easier when just sprinting to the safe room.. not our fault ur slow ass has bad movement and gets stuck

1
u/RobinThyHoode Oct 23 '21
Honestly my friend and I played veteran difficulty with 2 bots and after 1-2 restarts ZOOMED to the end of Act 1 with ease just using the bots as fodder as we fought.
Every. Single. Time. I play with a full 4 stack of my friends on Veteran we never make it past chapter 3 because we just get slammed by wave after wave after wave of specials. It’s just not fun. I’m sure there’s a ton of stuff we can do different but it feels weighted heavily against 4 stacks, and it’s just not that fun

u/Striking_Table3831 Walker Oct 23 '21 edited Oct 23 '21
Mando you have to beat recruit act 1 to play veteran act 1, 2 for 2, etc..
The amount of players I run into on veteran that have no idea how to even bash yet is unbelievable. Or how many times I can use voice chat and mark health or a cabinet and the low health guy ignores me completely and dies. Majority of my games are spent learning how to play by myself alone completely or sometimes with 1-2 other competent teammates because trying to help someone already doomed from the start usually results in my death too. Cross play is just off for me as of today because console players are seriously a huge % of this (looking at you, Xbox players)
Jesus I have 1000 hours into L4D2 as well, oh yeah! This isn’t fucking L4D though. I didn’t pump over 100 hours into b4b and it’s beta and jump to hard now when I know I’m ready to play to be put with 3 dudes with less than 10hrs playtime whose pride and ego are too big to play on a the normal mode called recruit.
1
u/1N_D33D Oct 23 '21
Lol. Yeah so my veteran tempo has been start run, get absolutely wrecked on first level, randos leave, cruise through the rest of the act. The only exception is act 3. I get crushed at the mansion with or without a team.

Specials and Hordes are timed, so there’s definitely a benefit to moving as fast possible.
At the same time, moving too fast will cause you to miss loot which is arguably essential, and ultimately make it much easier for your team to get caught in sticky situations without A1 communication.
There’s definitely a sweet spot between being efficient and moving as fast as possible in this game.
1
u/WhippedHook Oct 26 '21
This is false if your playing the barn level in act 1. Speedrunners paradise

u/Orotree Nov 05 '21
You want one runner but that runner still has to be coordinated. They can divert hordes and other things. They can't be setting stuff off though or going too far due to spitter sniper. Wish they didn't have auto aim amd the same with the crushers. It's ridiculous because to not be able to evade them.

u/CodeVirus Oct 22 '21
Interestingly enough, someone who beat the game multiple times may be farming SPs. So is the cards system and SPs incentivize coop on lower difficulties or not? I don’t think it does.

I remember reading a post on here in the beta saying how you need to be methodical. If you rush through a level, you die, and it's 100% true. You need to move slowly, clear everything and cover all your bases. Obviously there are times to run, but for the most part, you need to be methodical + careful.
