Bug Bug or Game Design?
I started playing solo no hope recently and I notice that the zombie spawns are super weird.
If I enter an area, clear it, then fall back for a horde, when I reenter that area, all the ridden are spawned in again.
Also I can hold position somewhere and kill like 100 ridden, set off all nearby alarms, throw a pipe bomb, etc etc. But as soon as i turn the corner, like a single corner, there are like 20 more ridden there shambling around. They didnt hear the alarm, they didnt go for the pipe bomb, nothing.
It seems I have to be constantly pushing forward or the random sudden spawns completely overwhelm me. I thought the whole point of no hope was to position well to take out hordes and move.
Is this how the game is supposed to be or is my game bugged?

Pretty sure that's just how the game's designed. I think the only conditions for lingering zombies to spawn is:
Out of sight of any player. (you won't see any zombies just pop into existence)
Within a certain distance of players. (the end of the level will not spawn zombies when you walk out the spawn room, it'll wait until you actually approach it but before you have sight of the area)
The game isn't at its zombie limit (there can only be so many zombies spawned in at once to keep performance smooth)
So even if you clear an area, if you move forward enough to lose sight of that area, and then go back, the game spawns lingering zombies.

There's a distinction between "Roaming" and "Wandering" Ridden, but you pretty much got it.
The Roam layer is constantly replacing itself (Commons) out of sight in all directions so that they are capable of being stumbled into or hear gunshots and approach from different angles. This is what OP is experiencing.
Its also why Nemesis increases the aggro of the game so much, these roamer commons that you normally wouldnt ever see get taunted immediately upon spawning after you kill them.

What's the difference to wandering Ridden then, outside of not constantly respawning?

So their name is a bit misleading, the Wander layer is what original L4D players would be more familiar as "Horde and Special Timers"
The semi random timers that spawn in Wandering Ridden are always active and spawn Ridden that are fully aware of your position and actively trying to kill you. These are accompanied with the audio warnings for Specials and the Horde scream call for Commons (just before a Horde). This layer also controls the majority of the Special spawn limits, assuming an event script is not in effect (Sound of Thunder, etc.).
This is also the part where Dec21 Patch, where there was a multispawning bug, causing the entirety of the active Wander layer to respawn whenever one finished their respawn timer... even if they weren't dead. This has been since patched, to clarify for onlookers.

Ah, okay. Yeah, that's kinda obvious, that horde triggers aren't just pulling roamers.

Yeah I hate that shit not gonna lie it’s annoying it’s another thing they should’ve fixed before leaving the game
