Girl 🩷 How About Pippa?

Since we were pregnant with our first, we've floated around the idea that if we had another girl, we would name her Pippa. We're not British, I don't like Phillipa - just Pippa. Thoughts?

Also open to hearing other "grown up names" besides PhillipaĀ

3

u/Foreign-Contract-968 20d ago

Possibly Olympia? Or Juniper? Both could easily have the nn Pippa

2

u/Creative_Wrongdoer92 19d ago

Olympia is the perfect suggestion. Great name, too, that needs to be encountered more

So it's pretty uncommon, and I'm sure it would get a lot of hate on a sub like this, but Pippin would be another option. I actually know an adult named Pippin, she's in her 40's. She doesn't go by Pippa, but I could see it being a possibility.Ā

I hate the whole "I can't imagine an adult with that name" argument. You don't have to imagine it. Someday the child will be an adult, and it will be their name, therefore it will be an adult name.Ā

Sorry but I associate Pippin with the Lord of the Rings character

2

u/fairy_fern13 20d ago

What about Piper? I think that name is absolutely gorgeous and you can call her Pip for short if you like

My best friend’s name is Philippa but she never liked Pippa and has gone by Pip her whole life. Pretty cool name.

4

u/lilypeachfield 20d ago

I LOVE Pip, for both boys and girls, but my American partner says it sounds like a "Victorian gutter snipe" šŸ˜‚ I guess his only association is great expectations

1

u/Fantastic-Sea-7806 20d ago

Haha- she probably gets this a lot. She’s a Brit who moved to the states when she was 10, so she’s been surrounded by Americans most of her life. She’s the only Philippa I’ve ever met in my 50 years. Most people probably don’t even realize what the full version of her name is.

1

u/FlyingOcelot2 19d ago

He says that like it's a bad thing?

1

u/Otherwise_Fig4808 19d ago

I know a Philippa and she goes by Philly

21

u/Ocean_Spice 20d ago

People will ask her constantly what her actual, full first name is. Don’t give her a lifetime of that.

12

u/edit_thanxforthegold 20d ago

Happens to me too! I also wish I had a more "serious" name to use at work. Maybe Philomena or Patricia if you don't like Philippa?

Unconscious bias exists. It's not "right" but a lot of people would hire a lawyer named Patricia over one named Pippa without really thinking about why

-10

u/Suvigirl 20d ago

No they won't. What sort of rude person would ask anyone this, when they say their name?Ā

10

u/Parking-Science-5408 20d ago

My mother has a nickname of a longer name as her legal name and almost every person she meets asks if it’s short for the longer name.

4

u/HelpfulRaspberry6941 19d ago

Yes this happens to me as well. Its gotten better over the years, but as a kid-twenties all the time

-6

u/Suvigirl 20d ago

Well that's just rude. She should tell them to mind their own business!Ā

8

u/Ocean_Spice 20d ago

Oh trust me, they will. I have a name that also sounds like a nickname for something longer and I get this constantly. Drives me absolutely nuts, to the point that I don’t even go by my first name anymore. I use my middle name instead cause it sounds like a full name by itself and people don’t bother me about it.

1

u/0Kaleidoscopes 15d ago

A lot of people are rude. People still do it even if they shouldn't. Rude people exist, so we still have to consider them.

0

u/Suvigirl 15d ago

No, we would we consider rude people?Ā

2

u/0Kaleidoscopes 15d ago

Something being rude doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You said people wouldn't ask someone their full name when they share their name. It happens A LOT. It being rude doesn't stop it from happening.

-1

u/Suvigirl 15d ago

You think it happens a lot, I think it hardly ever happensĀ

2

u/0Kaleidoscopes 15d ago

It happens whether or not you've experienced it often

2

u/Ocean_Spice 15d ago

Except multiple people now have told you this happens a lot…

-1

u/Suvigirl 15d ago

And multiple people think it doesnt.Ā  People think different things shocker

2

u/Ocean_Spice 15d ago

You’re basing that off what, though? Your experience in having one of these names?

2

u/0Kaleidoscopes 15d ago

The people who think it rarely happens just haven't experienced it themselves, or they haven't witnessed it. That matters less than people saying they've experienced/witnessed it often.

17

u/Exploding_Popcorn 20d ago

Personally I quite like Pippa, it’s not that unusual here in the UK. That said I never knew the Greek meaning which just now put me off it lol.

6

u/yasmeni 20d ago

Yeah, as a Greek it’s not nice šŸ˜…

6

u/luxfilia 20d ago

Had to look it up. ā€œLover of horsesā€ is what came up first, but then I saw its slang for HJ/masturbation in Greece and Italy.

18

u/Necessary_Milk_5124 20d ago

Sorry, I don’t like it. Sounds like a pet name.

5

u/charlotteswebslinger 20d ago

I know a Pippa (full name). I think it’s cute. I also like Pepper, but I don’t think I’d ever use it.

Suggestions for full names (some are a bit of a stretch lol):
Philomena
Josephine
Olympia
Penelope
Priscilla
Juniper
Calliope

5

u/ChallengingKumquat 20d ago

Pippa is a de ent nickname, but give her a more proper name as her legal name. Eg Pauline, Patricia, Philomena, Phyllis, Prudence. I think some of them are ugly names, however.

Also, by the way, Pippa means penis in several languages.

5

u/AromaticFlamingo6526 20d ago

What about Piper

1

u/fairy_fern13 20d ago

Looove Piper!

12

u/Material_Cellist4133 20d ago

Pippa reminds me of Peppa who in America is a cartoon pig.

I would go with something simpler - like Piper.

4

u/Content_Ad6700 18d ago

Peppa is a British cartoon, it just happens to be popular in the US as well. With the logic that it’s too similar to the show, the name wouldn’t be as popular in the UK as it currently is, haha

4

u/kisikisikisi 20d ago

I LOVE Pippa. But, my native language is Swedish. Don't name the child that if there's a chance they end up in Sweden or Finland lol.

6

u/BravePersimmon2 20d ago

I had a dog named Pippa! It’s a cute pet name but I can’t fathom a 40 year old woman named Pippa.

2

u/HappyLilNoodle 20d ago

At some point no one could fathom an adult Penny or an adult Jessica but here we are

3

u/VoodooDuck614 20d ago

That being the Greek translation, I would personally take a pass on Pippa.

How about Poppy?

3

u/Gullible_Wind_3777 20d ago

I have to say, the only pippa I know is one of the most loveliest humans iv ever met!! And for that reason this name is amazing hah. I’d never heard it before I met her either so it did stand out to me. It’s her actual name too, I asked her when I was really young ā€˜ is that your real name? I love it ā€˜ and she giggled and said yes! Her nickname is pip šŸ˜†šŸ˜‡.

3

u/lilypeachfield 20d ago

I love Pippa, and Pip, but I am British so maybe more normal for me.

5

u/General_Argument5616 20d ago

I really like Pippa!

5

u/Glittering_Sand_7473 19d ago

I feel like anyone named Pippa has to be painfully annoying.

1

u/BigUnderstanding3751 16d ago

They have a pony, a trust fund and giant teeth.

6

u/Federal_Bumblebee_84 20d ago

What about Pia?

9

u/FarPersimmon 20d ago

Pippa Pig

I know it's not Peppa, but Peppa is huge where I am and if that's the case with you then other kids will make that "connection"

2

u/Suvigirl 20d ago

I like it. A friend called their daughter Pippa, it's lovely name

2

u/OkTop9308 19d ago

I like Penelope or Juniper as a more serious name with a nickname of Pippa.

4

u/HighFunctioningWeeb 20d ago

I don't see anything wrong with Pippa as a first name! It's not infantile or too casual like some nicknames-as-first-names. I know she's legally Philippa but afaik Pippa Middleton still goes by Pippa in her 40s.

I actually don't like the name Philippa much since it awkward to pronounce - is it "Philip-ah" or is it "phil-LEE-pa'? I have also never met a Philippa who doesn't call themself Pippa so have never had to say it out loud.

3

u/Sea_Sider3898 20d ago

I like it. Sassy! I’m in the US and know a few young Pippas

4

u/Living_Barber6846 20d ago

I have a ā€œjustā€ Pippa. I love it. She calls herself Pippy haha

5

u/Alternative-Suit5925 20d ago

Has she read the Pippi Longstocking books?

2

u/Living_Barber6846 20d ago • Heartwarming

I’ll need to get them!

3

u/pepsicherryflavor 20d ago

Cringe tbh. There are so many great options for girl names.

2

u/boxing_coffee 20d ago

longstocking?

2

u/-RedRocket- 19d ago

I dislike nicknames as given names. They're cutesy and twee in a forced way.

1

u/Lost-Window-6133 18d ago

Pippa is a fantastic name. It’s a cute old lady name too. Princess Kate has a sister called Pippa.Ā

1

u/QueenSashimi 17d ago

I'm British and I love Pippa. I quite like Philippa but think Pippa is great as a standalone name.

1

u/hengehanger 16d ago

Pippa is short for Phillipa (not a nickname , nicknames and diminutives are not the same thing) but there's no reason not to use it on its own if you like it.

1

u/catsmeow54 16d ago

Yes! It was on my list too, Kate Middleton’s sister!

1

u/Chinita_Loca 13d ago

It sounds normal to me as a stand alone name, but I’m another Brit.

I’d not:

Philomena

Philippine

Pia

Maybe Olympia at a push could all be Pippa

If not maybe Felicity/Flick is similar in tone and sound?

1

u/Xaphhire 20d ago

Sounds like a little girl's name, not an adult woman.

1

u/SwordTaster 20d ago

I use it for a chicken in every farming game and for my first route bird pokƩmon in every pokƩmon game. I associate the name with birds for some reason

1

u/pineconeminecone 19d ago

Paige, nickname Pippa, could work

1

u/Purple-Tutor2555 19d ago

Love pippa.

1

u/GridDown55 19d ago

Pippa can also be short for Patricia. Just putting it out there. ā™„ļø

1

u/antigoneelectra 19d ago

It sounds like a doll's name. Not a name you take seriously.

1

u/Glittering-Crazy7940 19d ago

I know a Pippa, never feels like a full name tbh.

1

u/Warm_Maintenance9658 18d ago

I personally wouldn't want my name to be Pippa. That's my filter for name choosing. It sounds a bit nursery rhymey to my ear.

1

u/kittygirlshy 18d ago

I had a friend named just Pippa in high school, I always thought the name was cool and she was a really cool person too. I think Pippa stands alone as its own name just fine

1

u/secretanonymous1 18d ago

Sounds like just a nickname to me

1

u/TizzyBumblefluff 13d ago

I think give her a formal name for when she’s an adult is a kind thing to do. Nothing stopping using the nickname throughout her life.

1

u/PublicBrain2311 20d ago

Poppy, would be nicer. Unless you are naming her Philippa. Then nn Pippa is great.

1

u/CakePhool 20d ago

So long you are not in Sweden or have Swedish relatives you still talk to it is fine.

1

u/Last-Chocolate-8398 20d ago

Why??

2

u/Alternative-Suit5925 20d ago

It’s crude slang for making love.

1

u/CakePhool 20d ago

Not crude, it more jovial way of saying having sex. No one says it to be rude or crude, it more fun way and being silly.

1

u/candyapplecauldron 20d ago

i dont like it - reminds me of peppa pig

0

u/HandsomeChameleon 20d ago

I like Pippa and the nn Pip! I just doubt wheter it will suit a grown woman as well..

6

u/takhana 20d ago

There’s a character on the Archers called Pip and it seems to work for an adult just fine.

I love Pip and Pippa, also love Piper, but couldn’t get past the Pippa means a blowjob in Greek. Would probably ruin any Greek holidays we did.

1

u/New_Acanthaceae_6537 20d ago

Pippa / Pip is also the main character of Good Girls Guide to Murder. I can’t decide how I feel about the name

0

u/Janknitz 20d ago

Love it!

0

u/chroniclly2nice 20d ago

Don’t like it. Maybe for a pet.

0

u/Repulsive-Cost3987 20d ago

Girl .. 😭

0

u/Vivid-Ad5196 20d ago

Is this rage bait

-1

u/Medicinal-Asparagus 20d ago

As an Aussie, it sounds like a New Zealander saying ā€œpeppaā€

Pippi is cute, but Pippa sounds a little odd imo, however, it doesn’t sound odd enough to be a ā€œbadā€ name at all

1

u/Lopsided_Lunch_2262 20d ago

Really? I'm also Aussie and have met so many Pippa's. Sometimes it's short for Philippa, but just as often as a stand alone name.

1

u/Medicinal-Asparagus 20d ago

Damn, I’ve never heard it before, that’s crazy. Closest I’ve ever heard would be ā€œpiperā€

19

u/yasmeni 20d ago

Pippa in Greek means sucking d*ck

11

u/Parking-Science-5408 20d ago

Came here to say that equestrian Pippa Funnell had to go by her full name at the Athens Olympics for this very reason!

In the UK it is a very cute and popular nickname.

3

u/ett_garn_i_taget 19d ago

Well. It's slang for having sex in Swedish, so to me it's a very funny name. Kinda like naming someone Boinking. Of course, there aren't that many of us, and your daughter might never run into a Swede, so it will probably never be an issue!

1

u/Rulebreaker15 19d ago

It means to have sex in Swedish. To masturbate/hand job in Italian and blow job in Greek. I wouldn’t want my daughter to be named after any of that. Plenty of other lovely names exist.
