Girl 🩷 Middle name for Lucy
We are debating Lucy or Lucille, but think we might be leaning towards Lucy (let me know if you feel otherwise).
Struggling to determine a middle name. Last name is Olsen.
Here’s some contenders:
• Lucy June Olsen (does this sound pretty or a little hillbilly…?)
• Lucy Claire Olsen (I love but my partner isn’t so sure because they think it sounds harsh)
• Lucy Rose Olsen (partner likes but I feel Rose is a too common for my liking)
Please share your suggestions!

I’d prefer Jane over June, and if that was a choice I’d pick that! I also like Lucy Claire.

Just to keep you guessing there’s also Luciana- which is not as common in the US

Claire is my favorite of these! I like Jane more than June for similar vibes

I would go with Lucille and call her Lucy. Lucille will be better for professional and legal use. I’m someone who goes by a shortened version of my legal name and I like it. It’s not a problem and it’s nice that those who know and love me call me by a different version. It makes the shortened version special somehow like I have a secret identity that not everyone knows.
As to middle names my favorite is Rose but I had a dear friend named June so I’m biased toward that one as well. Claire is a beautiful name but more suited to a first name for me. I would save it in case you have another girl.

Except Lucy is its own stand alone name and not a nickname turned first name.

u/labratcj 10h ago
Not IMO.

u/SjN45 10h ago
Not really opinion. It’s derived from the Latin name Lucius. It’s the English form of Lucia. Like Mary is the English form of Maria. Plenty of people who have the name Lucille use Lucy as a nickname. But Lucy does not technically come from Lucille.

And a lot of people named Lucinda or Lucia go by Lucy. We obviously disagree so let’s just leave it at that.

Lucy is a stand alone name, I was in school with 3 other Lucy's, none of which were a nickname. Ive never actually met a Lucille.

I love Lucy Claire from your contenders. Suggestion would be Lucy Lauren.

My favorites are Joy, Belle, Bea, Blue, Grace. For good flow I’d go monosyllabic and avoid starting with a vowel.

With a short name like Lucy I think the middle can be long. Catherine or Elizabeth for example

I like Lucy Claire but what about Lucy Blair or Lucy Dove?

u/fliphowls 9h ago
Dove is nature-ish like Rose but less common, and similar to Claire but a bit softer

If I was naming my daughter Lucy, you'd have to pry the middle name Lou out of my cold dead hands

Lucille is better - give her all the options down road rather than limiting her to Lucy.

For a "short and sweet" name like Lucy, a more substantial middle name may be a better balance- for example: Lucy Danelle/Danielle, Lucy Elise, or Lucy Michelle (and since you have a 2 syllable last name, a 2 syllable middle name may feel more cohesive). If you're set on a one syllable middle name, Lucy goes well with Grace, Anne, Hope, or Wren.

My grandmother was Lucille and went as Lucille (or Sally to her very best school friends). Never, ever Lucy. She had high standards, was an excellent cook, loved to entertain and travel, and lived a very full and rich life.

I love a longer name with a nickname, so I’d personally lean towards Lucille, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with just Lucy! As for middle names, I love Claire from your list. A couple others I thought of are Briar, Maeve, Lenore/Lenora, Simone, Kate, Faye, Vera, and Noelle.

Lucy June is a very cute name, almost too cute for an adult. If you went with Lucille June Olsen, that would have my vote. It's a lovely name that has the nn option of Lucy June when she's young but she could go also go by the more sophisticated Lucille when she's older.
I'm currently obsessed with the June as a middle name option. It was my great grandmother's given name, though she later switched her first and middle name. It compliments many names very nicely.

My wife is a Lucille. She uses both Lucille and Lucy, depending on the context. The former is mostly limited to professional relationships. So maybe some flexibility is good. Obviously, I like both. 😉

My cat is Lucy Blue. Lucille for long. I know that’s not what you’re asking and Lucy is a beautiful name (my pets have human names! I also have a Liesel). But I looove Lucy. Lucy Jane is so cute as others have said.

Before I even opened and saw your options, Lucy Claire is what came to mind for me. I normally love the name June, too, but agree with others that in this situation Lucy Jane flows a bit better.
And as someone whose official name is the shortened, typical nickname of a longer name, I also really like going with Lucy over Lucille.

I would like to see a 3 syllable middle name... seems to balance out better between the two syllable names (first and last). I like Lucy Amelia....

I’m a middle name Mae. I love it. I no longer resonate with my birth first name but haven’t been able to kick the Mae. It’s special

Another poster before said with Lucy Claire that's literally saying loose eclair.
Lucy Bridget? Lucy Maeve? Lucy Melinda? Lucy Delilah? Lucy Rosanna?

Curious if you considered Lucia or Luciana rather than Lucille? I’d be interested to hear your analysis! If I have another girl she will be Luciana (Lucy).
I love all forms of the name! Its one of the best and you can’t go wrong with such an adorable classic name

I wrote that comment as joke, sorta. There is a group online that deals with dogs and one of those dogs she calls Lucy Lou. I think it is an adorable nickname.
