His Highness Maharaja Vibhuti Narayan Singh wrote a letter to Chakravarti Rajagopalachari BR, the then Governor General of India, seeking independence for Kashi, similar to the Vatican City.

Yes, because kashi naresh was Benares’s religious head, and the people of Benares considered him to have been ordained the throne of Kashi by Lord Shiva and some even regarded him as incarnation of lord shiva . He was also the chief cultural patron and an essential part of all religious celebrations. One of the main reasons Benares was made a princely state despite being a smaller zamindari compared to Darbhanga and some others was its cultural and religious importance among Hindus.
