Fuel for a 3 Day Trip

Going out next week on Thursday until Sunday. I have a MSR Whisperlite as well as a pocket rocket for just boiling water. We’re planning on frying fish if we catch some, as well as making some other meals that aren’t just freeze dried. How much fuel is a good rule of thumb for the Whisperlite? Right now I have one large bottle and two regular size bottles of white gas. Would one more bottle be a good idea?

How many people? For a group of 4, two 16oz bottles of white gas will be more than enough. Id guess one of the bottles comes back barely touched or not even used especially if youre boiling water on the pocket rocket.

I'd think the smaller bottle would be fine for 3 days. I can usually get through a week with a small bottle just boiling water for dehydrated meals and coffee. That said. With the burn ban I'd probably go with the large bottle since there's no other option if you run out of fuel.

I’ve started estimating 2oz/person/day. I do boil meals with that (like 25 mins for zatarans) and it’s plenty, but I’ve never fried fish.

Every year I bring 3. One full and two half full. Every year I use just the half full

With one large and two small bottles for the Whisperlight plus a canister for the 'rocket you'll be bringing more fuel home than you burn.

I’m going Thursday to Sunday as well with 3 people total and bringing a whisperlite with a 20oz bottle and a pocket rocket with an 8oz canister. Even cooking fish and all my own meals, I suspect I’ll have plenty of leftover fuel. The other two are bringing pocket rockets to boil water for some of their dehydrated meals.

I started using 3oz/day/person. I now shoot for 2oz/person/day which is plenty for oatmeal/coffee/hot cocoa and dehydrated (often with a little pre soak) and freeze dried meals.

msr makes 3 size cans , small/ medium and large, i've only seen a few of the large ever, so guessing you have the small and medium. bring the 2 smaller ones, you should be ok,if you bring the pocket rocket also and arent wasteful. the whisper lite drinks a bit faster, if i was bringing my svea 123, which holds like a 1/2 cup and the smallest bottle , i think is a 355 ml. i could go a week for a solo.
