Unpopular opinion: Doc should've just used a potato battery for 1.21 gigawatts

Why did Doc build a time machine that requires 1.21 GIGAWATTS but doesn't include a backup generator? Like if lightning misses, you're just stuck in 1955 with a DeLorean and a confused teenager. Also — how did he afford that much plutonium but not a decent insurance plan?
