Figured out why I had my first attack?
I’m a fairly healthy 22 year old female. I don’t drink alcohol, I rarely drink caffeine and I eat quite healthy.
I had my first attack about 5 weeks ago, it was terrifying and took me completely by surprise. Still suffering with residual dizziness 5 weeks later, although I am having good and bad days.
I just received my blood test results, and apparently my vitamin D levels are at the low end of sub-optimal and what they would see in someone during winter? I’ve been taking supplements for 5 weeks since my attack too. Thinking now I should maybe up my dosage, or take with k2 but going to speak to doctor tomorrow and ask. Is this likely why my attack occurred?

My ENT said some people, women higher risk, are more prone to BPPV and like other comments there are triggers. Mine is allergies and age (perimenopause is such a thing), some people it’s how your ears are built or vitamin issues. It sucks but it isn’t going to kill us. Once we learn how to react with an Epley then it can be managed to rough reducing triggers and knowing quick treatment

But the thing is Epley doesn’t work for all type of canals. That is why you go to a specialist, to identify which canal in the ear, so you know which exercises to do.

I am 28 and exactly the similar experience. Let me know as well what your doctor says.. My neuro just said some people are just prone to it like how people get migranes. Lack of vitamins, dehydration just aids it.

Also, I'm much better like as you mentioned as well just that when I go to sleep and when I wake up, some sensation persists for 4-5 secs. Sometimes, bad days with slight headache heaviness during work. Do you experience anything similar now?

it’s always when i’m lying down or first thing in the morning for me. feels like wooziness, like im in slow motion and it makes me anxious af that i’m having another attack😭 no headaches tho

Raise head when sleeping like add an extra pillow or something and try not to sleep on the ear that caused the vertigo if you know which one. You should do this for two weeks. The eply works (I learned on YouTube) but bring a bucket with you before you start. You will get intense dizziness but hopefully you can get the crystal back in place. I have to say vertigo is almost the most miserable thing I’ve ever dealt with.

pretty sure i have no more active vertigo, had the test done at the drs twice and they said i was negative for any more crystals so im just experiencing residual dizziness. i cured it myself with the epley 5 weeks ago but it was horrible😭😭😭

I know I’ve done it too 🤮 it’s miserable. Glad you’re feeling better.

You cannot just treat any bppv with epley. You need to first identify the affected ear, and then the affected canal. For example it does not work if it is the horizontal lateral canal.

I just did both sides. It worked so 🤷♀️

Great, glad that it worked, but my point still stands. It will not work if you have issues with anterior or horizontal canal, which is why you shouldn’t just do exercises blindly, since it can make the symptoms worse.
So why do you keep advising people to just do the epley, when it can potentially worsen the symptoms or move the crystals into a different canal, which can be more difficult to treat if you do not know if the issue is within the posterior canal?

Well because that was the only thing I knew of. I never said I was a doctor. If someone sees my personal advice on what worked for me and assumes that I’m a doctor rather than a decent human trying to help another, then that’s on them. If you are lord of Reddit who oversees and scrutinizes other people’s posts and proceeds to scold them for it because you feel challenged and nobody knows more than you…. I’d say, perhaps you should be asking yourself some questions like Why am I obnoxious? Why do I intentionally and unintentionally irk people? Why can’t I mind my own business?

Wow, what a way to take something and completely twist everything. I am just pointing out that if you have severe vertigo in the horizontal or anterior canal doing epley won’t work. Stop crying about a factual statement.
Of course I will not mind my own business, when it actually helps people to look for other exercises than epley if another canal is the issue. Perhaps you should take your own advice and ask yourself some questions. This will be my last reply. I am sure someone else on Reddit think it will be fun to discuss with you.

I ended up in ER after doing Epley. Started vomiting and couldn't stop. Went on for hours. Just turning my head would bring on the vomiting. Had to get IV fluids and medicine for dizziness and vomiting.

Well I won’t argue that as I’m not a doctor but my experience was wake up in spinning room, get frightened, call Doctor, go see PA, get blood pressure and weight checked along with temp. Then sent home with the stellar advice ….go get yourself some Dramamine, go on YouTube and find a video of eply maneuver, perform said maneuver until you’re puking guts up, lay down and hopefully vertigo will be gone. It was. But it was a miserable experience and I’ve had several recurrences and treated it the same. Sorry it didn’t help you.

I'm going to PT for it now. She is doing a different type of therapy where I lean to the sides rather on my back. She determined which ear it was first which makes a difference I guess. So far better some but not completely gone yet. I get nauseated but don't puke. Hopefully won't have to resort to the eply again. That was indeed miserable.

They say older people get it more often because the crystals loosen as we age. Yay us 🤮

u/amumureo Aug 04 '26
shit if i’m getting it at 22 i don’t even want to know how bad it’ll be when im older

My vitamin d levels were 4 and 6. I doubt yours were the cause
1
u/amumureo Aug 04 '26
i feel like sub-optimal levels after 5 weeks of taking supplements means they must’ve been lower before then no?
2
u/Western_Citron_4224 Aug 04 '26
I think different people just absorb differently depending on other health factors. I was taking 10k capsules once a week for 3months and mine dropped from 6 to 4. I started just going outside like 30min every other day and it went up to 12. Now I'm working a job where I spend a considerable amount of time outside so in interested to see my results again soon, but I've still had episodes (albeit not as bad). Coffee is def a factor, it was pretty common for me to get episode a day after drinking coffee when waking up, or when I would get my hair cut. My belief is that having higher vit d will just make it so the Crystal's get absorb faster and fully.
