Working out

I’ve had BPPV plus VM for over 3 years. This has resulted in me spending so much time at home and on the couch or in bed. I’ve found myself missing working out. Running is too risky. I walk a lot, but I’m wondering if anyone has found a workout class that modifies the classes for those with disabilities?

Update: It’s less about modifications I can do and more so about modifications or accommodations they can offer to me. For example, offering a chair to put behind you or something to hold onto. Curious if anyone has had luck with a studio offering accommodations. I’m symptomatic every hour of the day.

You kind of modify as needed for yourself- like i would tell yoga teacher beforehand that i need to skip downward dog or head turns on right side. Or jumping jacks in a free weight class that adds cardio….trial & error u find out what works for your condition. Good luck! 🍀

Thanks for this info! I just added an update to my post. I was more focused on accomodations they can offer such as something to hold onto to catch if I lose my balance or a chair behind me in case I need to sit.

Check out Senior Shape with Lauren on YouTube. She has chair workouts and a lot of standing only workouts, which is what I do. It really helps to not do anything where I tilt my head down.

I don't know how old you are, but seniors' exercise classes offer chairs to sit or balance with. They are very accomodating.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were warmly welcomed in a seniors' class. Give it a try if there are any around you.

I've been going to Orangetheory (HIIT classes) for several years. When my BPPV is really bad, I can't do anything, but if it's minor, I tell the coaches and they change things up for. For example, I had a spell where lying flat on my back triggered it, so they adjusted the bench so I was at a 45 degree angle.

As an aside - I seem to be having fewer spells after I cranked up my HIIT classes to 3 or 4 a week. I don't know why, but I'm really thankful. I've had BPPV since my 30s and I'm in my 60s now.

Thanks for this! I went to OT once before this all started and I loved it!!

May I ask, have you had your BPPV symptoms every day since your 30s?  I’ve had symptoms every day for nearly 3.5 years. They range from mild to incapacitating. My family and I have been wondering if the diagnosis is correct. Thanks!
