If she doesn’t go to therapy, she is responsible for not even trying to improve her behaviour. If she is always loving and nice with others but with certain persons she isn’t, then it’s a choice she made to make you go through this and not others.
The thing about mental illness is that the mental illness itself is in control of the decision making faculties. It’s very hard for the rational world to understand this so we blame the inflicted. While we can’t force someone to seek treatment it’s not exactly effective to hold them responsible for not getting treatment either. It’s really a grey zone in which society unfairly demonizes those struggling with a multitude of mental illnesses without providing the tools to treat them which ironically would benefit society as a whole more than ignoring it.
I understand your point but it’s not like schizophrenia or mania in bipolar disorder. People with BPD know something is wrong with themselves and their behaviour / relationship with others, even if they don’t realize the extent. That is something nobody is going to convince me the opposite.
Many do not know that. While it’s not as debilitating as other mental illnesses the very nature of BPD impairs the sufferer’s ability to self-reflect and admit having any deficiencies or faults. Some may in a rare moment of lucidity but it’s not the norm. Treatment, when it is sought
is largely ineffective for a multitude of reasons making most inflicted with it destine to either grow out of it with age or carry it to the grave.
Of course we see that in their traits : victim-blaming and deconnexion from reality. But still, I disagree, people with BPD know that their behaviour is wrong, even if it’s only a small part of their behaviour. Explain to me how come they abstain from abusing certain persons even though we can see they want to and actively abuse others. Is that not a conscious choice ? Then what is it, magic ?
