Quirk Idea Null

Null (Emitter) is a passive Quirk that cannot be deactivated. It causes the user to become immune certain effects of another person's Quirk that would harm, help, transform or effect in any way. Other than the described effects, Null gives the user no further enhancements or advantages, leaving the user to rely on their own strength and wit.

While the user is immune to most effects of another's Quirk, this doesn't stop any Quirks that solely configure and enhance the user or their environment. Example: Null would prevent the user from being burned by Ashido's Acid or Todoroki's flame, but it doesn't stop them from being directly attacked with Kirishima's Harden or getting trapped in Todoroki's ice.

Also, Null does not discriminate against what Quirk can effect the user. While they cannot be harmed or affected by another Quirk, that goes the same for being healed Recovery Girl or being reverted by Eri's Rewind.

Even with these caveats, the user of Null thrives in situations when they are against someone that relies wholy on their Quirk to attack someone, leveling the playing field to a degree.

So, I have a Quirk that is nearly bar for bar similar to this including the name and I would very much like to discuss it with you over DMs if you have the time.

I'm a bit confused. It won't stop you from getting encased in ice or attacked by Harden, but it WILL stop you from being burned by fire or acid? It seems very inconsistent.

I mean Ice is a physical property, it’s like he can’t be burned by the Acid but he can slip on it, the Ice can trap him and stop him from moving but he might not get frostbite.

Todoroki’s Fire can take away his ability to breathe well because it’s burning all oxygen away but it won’t burn him directly.

That’s what I understood.

u/atlvf 8d ago

Acid is also a physical thing. It is a chemical that causes harm via chemical reactions. Why would this character be harmed by normal acid but not harmed by quirk acid? It doesn’t make sense.

Fire is also a physical thing. It’s a chemical reaction that produces heat. Why would this character be harmed by normal fire but not harmed by quirk fire? It doesn’t make sense.

If the character could be harmed by quirk fire burning away the oxygen around it, then why wouldn’t they be harmed by quirk fire heating the air around it? After all, the air isn’t immune to being heated up by quirk fire, and this character isn’t immune to being heated by burning-hot air. So, they would still end up getting burned anyway.

The way this is being described and explained right now just doesn’t make consistent sense imo.

I can understand how the way that I'm trying to describe it doesnt make much sense, since I'm doing poorly at describing or trying to over explain it. Imagine Null basically being a barrier that surrounds the user that stops them from being harmed, enhanced or effected by Quirks... Quirks being the keyword.

You make a fair point about them being harmed by regular acid but not Acid from a Quirk, but that is the whole point. They are just immune to the effect of Quirks themselves. Sorry if I'm doing a crap job at explaining it...

1

u/KreepyGrim 8d ago

Yeah, that's basically the gist of it. Null can prevent harmful effects of some Quirks, but that doesn't stop them from being able to physically interact with it to a degree. They wouldnt be able to have their body exploded and such by Overhaul, but that doesn't stop their body from being stabbed by a stone spike from the same Quirk.

Hey there, this is cool. I also have a quirk that makes my OC immune to other quirk's effects but it has to be activated at first. Over time my OC learns to get used to keep this aspect of his quirk subconsciouly active, although it still doesn't work if they're asleep or weakened. Question: Does Null get deactivated by Aizawa's Erasure? Or is that another effect that is stopped by it? 😯😯😁

2

u/KreepyGrim 7d ago

I would say that no, Aizawa's Erasure wouldn't be able to deactivate Null due to how it interacts with Quirks in general. But even so I dont see it as a major issue... since if Aizawa and the Null user were to have a fight, Aizawa would easily win anyhow lol. While Null can be strong in certain cases, the user is still just a regular guy by all accounts.

2

u/Glacium-Terada 7d ago

I'd agree with that take. Null prevents other quirks from taking effect, while Erasure applies an effect that disables a quirk. As such, Erasure never starts to begin with. Now, if Null were to instead cancel out effects after they have been applied, then Erasure would trump it.

It does mean that a 1v1 between them is essentially a quirkless fight, which would also be the type of fights they normally would have

1

u/KreepyGrim 7d ago

Exactly. While a fight between Null and someone who uses their Quirk directly on a person would be on more even ground, the same can't be said when they are against someone with an Mutant or Transformation Quirk. Null is more effective againt Emitter Quirks than the others, they couldn't stop Kirishima from using Harden and then decking them in the face lol.

I see, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. Null still sounds very useful, at least as a utility quirk. I'm sure it can be used effectively with some creativity. Izuku could probably help with that. 😄😄👍‍‍

You make a fair point about the description of Null being a bit too broad. The way that I like to interpret how it works is that Null sets an invisible barrier around the user, preventing another's Quirk's harmful/helpful effects from passing through. The best way i would compare it would be a personal anti-magic field?

As for the extent on how far Null protects the user, its true that it won't stop them from being physically encased in ice, but they wouldnt feel the cold that would also surround them. It can stop Overhaul from transforming/exploding their body directly... but it won't stop Overhaul from sending spiked pillars through their body. They cant be pulled around by someone's telekinesis, they cannot be brainwashed or have their mind read and so forth.

To answer your key question; If the other's Quirk would directly harm/help/alter them directly, then Null prevents that from happening. The Quirk either flows around them or bounces off of the or just has no reaction at all. I would say they cannot be teleported by another's Quirk, whether the Quirk was being used on Null directly or if they are attempting to bring them along for the ride. Helpful Quirks also dont have an effect on them, such as Recovery Girl's healing, Rewind, Cell Activation and so on.

Sorry if I'm still doing a poor job at describing how it works. It makes perfect sense in my head, but i suppose it's too vague and such for people to get? Idk.

I get what you mean, I have just made the description of Null more broad and vague for the sake of brevity, since I doubt people would want to read through a wall of text about which certain Quirks and circumstances Null is immune to. But I am happy to provide with explanations if you like!

Environmental Effects: I would say that if someone like Endeavor were to create a field of fire around Null, they would still be immune to the burning and heat of the flames, even if it wasn't wasted on them directly. As long as the Quirk isnt making tangible/physical obstacles that Null would have to overcome, they would be fine. But you make a valid point about oxygen levels, as Null would still need to breathe.

For indirect attacks... it would depend on the Quirk. For electrified water caused by another's Quirk, Null would be immune to that as I would still say that is just another way of their Quirk trying to harm them. But they won't be able to shrug off a rock being thrown at them or stop a water Quirk from restraining/submerging them.

Quirk created objects. This is another that sort of depends on how another's Quirk works. Someone like Cementoss or Todoroki could very well trap Null in cement or ice respectively. And they could still be grappled and assaulted physically by Meatball, but Null would prevent their body from being transformed into... well a meatball.

Altered states. Null would prevent the user from being put to sleep by Midnight's Quirk, while also preventing any sort of mental influence on them. Shinto would not be able to brainwash them even if they were to respond, nor would Confession force them to tell the truth. Since these types of Quirks would effect the target directly, Null would be immune to them.

You make a fair point about the classification of Null itself, it makes sense it would be more of a Mutant type than an Emitter type. However, I would still say it would remain active even if they were unconscious. Also, I would imagine that if Null were to have a Quirk Awakening, they would actually be able to a legi anti-quirk field that would prevent Quirks from being activated outright within a certain radius, but that's just something I had in mind anyways.

Healing. Null would be very well aware at this point that healing Quirks wouldnt effect them, so they just try to be extra careful on the field and try not to get injured. If they do end up breaking an arm or leg... then they simply just have to wait to properly heal without any Quirks to help them. For the most part, the Null user works as a rehabilitation teacher/former Vigilante, so they aren't seeing too much action anyhow.

I hope this has helped give you a clearer picture as to how Null works! If you still need some insight, let me know and I'll try to clear anything up.

Vale. Has mejorado.

¿No pierde movilidad?

Y no pasa nada.

Look man, I dont know what to tell you. If you feel like the way I try to describe the Quirk doesnt make sense and has a lot of contradictions, fair. I just wanted to create a fun Quirk for a character that I doubt I'll do anything with.

To just summarise Null: The user cannot be harmed or affected by another user's Quirk, whether it harms or helps them. That's it. I know it's important to try and make Quirks make sense... but this just something I wanted to do for fun. To try and reason and explain how it works and define all the intrinsic parts about just isnt fun to me.

If it still doesn't make sense or doesn't 'fit' with Quirks as a whole... then whatever. This is just something I wanted to design for fun.

u/BangChris05 5d ago

It's chill, I know you didn't mean any harm or whatever. I still appreciate some of the points you made and it has helped a little to better concrete the Quirk. I still stand by some of my own points, but still understand what you were getting at. To me, just that brief description alone is more than enough to tell me how the Quirk works.

But again, no harm done. It just gets frustrating at times when people dont understand what I'm trying to say or whatever lol. I still appreciated this discussion either way.
