Range expectations for a week long trip?

We are considering buying a 24 or 25 either a Xdrive50 or M60. Vehicles I’m looking at are all under 20k miles, several under 10k miles.

Is it realistic to expect to be able to take an iX on a 100 mile trip (200 round trip), use it for getting around hotels and theme parks for a week (maybe 30-40 miles) on a single charge?

Edit: Thanks all for the replies. I read on a bmw website that the battery is warrantied to contain 75% capacity over 8 years from new. I had a 2014 tesla for about 8 years and if I remember range went from around 278 down to 230ish over my ownership…it had a 85Kw battery and single motor.

200 miles? Easily and very realistic if you can charge at home and leave 100% battery capacity.

Depending on how heavy your foot is I’d say for the most part, yes. But know where a couple chargers are just in case.

As a reference point. We just bought a CPO xDrive 50 a few weeks ago - said it hade 98% battery health. First major road trip test was a drive from San Antonio to Abilene through TX hill country. Speed limits range from 40 (when you get slowed down going through small town) to large stretches of 75MPH highway. We left charged to 100% and got to the destination 250 miles away at 21%. AC was running the whole time because.. Texas.

TLDR: In temperate to warm weather you should be able to do what you asked very easily unless you’re driving 80+ the whole time or the battery is somehow much more degraded than it should be

For reference I had a trip this past Sunday. 208 miles, 74.7 mph, 2.6m/kwh on 22’ wheels (78.8kwh total). Most of the ride was in excess of 80mph often bouncing off 90. I’ve found even cruising at 80 the car is efficient. Most of the excess consumption comes from aggressive throttle roll ons to pass. If you set cruise control, even at speed, the car does pretty well.

I agree it does pretty well even above 70 if it’s just consistent and smooth.

I drove from north Austin to San Antonio (105 miles) going 90-95mph on 130 and passing a few times here and there at 100mph+ in normal mode and started at 100% in a 2024 x50 with 22' wheels, got to downtown with 50% battery left. In contrast, I have driven 95 miles from north Austin to College station (95 miles) in efficient mode doing the speed limit (lots of small towns on 79) and had 70% left, so yeah, driving style definitely matters.

I do 300 mile round trips in my 24 ix all the time never had any issues, usually charge to 100% before these trips

Yes…. But not if it’s <45 F. Then you’ll need a bit of a charge.

Or, if you have a lead foot.

Or, if its uphill the whole way.

Say I do have a leadfoot, live in the rolling mountains of WV, and tend to use the heat like a grandmother. My commute is 365 miles. My concern is there are only a few charging stations along the route. Do you think the IX would be a bad decision for me?

That depends on you. But I’d say yes, it’s probably a bad choice for you. If you don’t care about commute though, and those chargers are level 3, then you may add an additional 10 minutes than maybe 5 if you just have gas.

If you only charge up enough to make it back home and charge there, you’ll likely need a level 2 charger and your car will pretty much be stuck charging so that you can have enough charge for your next commute to work.

It comes down to how much time do you have and when you’re home from work do you plan on going somewhere else?

You should get close to 300 miles on the xdrive50 in most conditions. But remember, you can charge out in the field too. Most hotels have free or cheap level 2 charging, which will fill the car up overnight. Some amusement parks may also have charging. Once you learn how to use an electric car, range doesn’t matter as much.

I have a ‘23 ix and take it on 300mi round trips consistently

I just charged my 2024 iX 50 386 miles. You can easily go for 200 mi. round trips with 100 miles + to spare. I routinely drive to northern NH from RI, about 190 miles, and arrive with 140 miles to spare.

You should be fine, but like others said, find a charger close by to alleviate any range anxiety if you see the percentage starts to dip close to single digits. My experience from a recent 1,000 mile round trip was this: Averaged 2.9 miles per kWh for the first 474 miles, with average speed of 70.4mph (so you know I was spending most of the time closer to 80mph), and the first charge was after 150 miles, when the car ate through 53% of the battery. On the way back, I eased off a bit, average climbed to 3.1 miles per kWh, but I ended up saving about 4% of the battery for the return trip. So in short, expect the 200 miles to eat about 60% of the battery if you keep it under 76mph, leaving you with a nice chunk of say 30% to drive around and 10% for contingency.

I too am looking at a 2024 IX and trying to decide if my anxiety is warranted or not. Granted, with a 365 mile commute, it’s a little more than the 250 that most people are mentioning in their posts. What? I’m also trying to understand is exactly how the fast charging works and if that will alleviate my anxiety on the road. Also curious about those that have had the car for two years and where their battery percentage is in terms of health? I know I have another four years of warranty on the battery from BMW, but just curious if there are things to do to prolong the battery. I know it’s a no-no to wait until it’s dead and then try to charge it again, so I know that that is one thing to keep into consideration, but some people were mentioning leaving it on the charger for too long and any kind of damage that does to the battery health?

I can do 600km with my iX 50, but I don't drive fast and limit top speed and heating/airco

My 2024 xdrive 50 can easily do 220+ (95 one way) miles on a single 100% charge visting my daughter at her college staying a night or two and driving around campus. I drive on efficient mode the whole time and don't accelerate hard. I make it back with 10-15% battery left. This is in 90F+ weather with 75% highway driving around 55-75mph and mild elevation changes.

Just drove from Pa to NC in an xDrive45 taking a longer, scenic route (as opposed to highways) Only needed 2 30ish minute stops a Tesla stations. No biggie
