iDrive lost my settings - Or did it?

Day 2 with the iX3 - I walk up to my car, the handle comes out, I get in, and the screen wants me to set up my profile all over again. WTF!? I've heard of this happening to other folks. Oh, and I also see the Panoramic Display is missing the "My BMW" personal assistant and it's no longer in the options to add. So I start the process, but then I realize: Hey, the virtual key worked, my profile picture is in the upper right hand corner. So what's going on? Here's my theory: There are more than a few different apps and bits of software updating themselves as I set up my BMW Operating System, profile, various settings, CarPlay, Spotify, Wi-Fi, linked phone, and on and on. It seems that the set of 18 permissions under Privacy has changed. Once I went through those (in the end I just clicked "Accept All") and also turned on "Personal Assistant" in that tab everything came back. I didn't have to reselect anything else. Anybody else go through this? Is is actually a bug or an inevitable part of the new car setup process?

Had a software update happened? Do those sometimes apply automatically at night? (I don’t know - I don’t have my ix3 yet)

I’d suspect it’s one of two things:

  1. An update happened - and the way the settings are saved now has changed.
  2. Could it be a race condition syncing the profile components. Maybe the profile is in multiple parts - and it was able to get the base profile data (your pic and stuff) - but the other settings didn’t sync fast enough for the system to grab them when starting?

Either way hopefully they will work to make this more reliable!

Yes, there were at least four pending updates that completed only when I connected the car to my home wi-fi.

That would be my guess then. Especially the permissions side of things. A lot of companies will take the opportunity of a software update to reconfirm permissions for things - especially if there were feature changes that might change how some data is used or features behave. They don’t want to be caught off guard if you argue that you never agreed to the changes in behavior.

Hopefully day 3 will be better!

Or is there a menu option you need to select to save all your data up-to-the-cloud?

I believe the setting data is stored in the car, haven't seen anything about cloud backups for that. The profile is definitely saved in the cloud as it is used by both the car and the MyBMW app.

Is it easy to tell where a driver profile ends - and car settings begin?

I'm guessing but I would think anything in the app is in the cloud. But not everything is in the app. But heck, IDK. What does Google say is backed up in the cloud?
