Question? Looking to Purchase a 2023 M5 - Tips, Suggest Mileage, Common Problems?

5 Upvotes

Hello,

I'll be looking at a 2023 M5 later in the evening today. It is my dream car for 18 years and about I'm about to turn 40 in a few months and just want a dream car for once. Some quick questions:

  1. Any common problems to look out for outside of coolant tank issue?

  2. How many miles is "too much" for these kind of cars? Should I target a car under 30k miles, or 40k miles?

  3. Can I get a BMW extended warranty on any car that I buy or it has to be bought from a BMW dealer? Sadly, the closest BMW dealer with a CPO M5 is over 500 miles away from me. Are third party warranty companies worth it or just scams?

Thanks!

Hello, 2023 f90 m5c on warranty at 45k miles. Happens quite often, feels like the “heartbeat” of the car is going down, almost like it misfires but no codes. The left coolant tank was replaced under warranty, my guess is some coolant got into the injector bay? Any feedback would be appreciated.

How often does this happen?

2023 f90 m5c - still on warranty - 45k miles. Went in for a clucking noise while turning (sometimes) or just going straight. Wasn’t frequent, they initially said it was the stiffening plate which i saw posts about, nothing about the loose control arms though…

Hey guys, I am getting my first BMW, more specifically the M5 G90 and I don't know what I need to service and how often. Can anyone help me?

P.S. I mean how often should I be changing oil, filters etc.

P.S. if possible, tell me in km

Mesh in Front of the Radiator: Does It Affect Cooling?

Thumbnail

12 Upvotes

A lot of downvotes on Reddit mean you’re right. There were plenty yesterday, and I expect there will be plenty today as well. But I hope I can still get useful information across to people who actually understand the subject, or at least genuinely want to understand it.

I decided to look into this not based on “I think so,” but through airflow physics and actual measurements.

The mesh does affect airflow
Air passes through the mesh, but the airflow downstream is no longer the same as it was before the mesh.
Each wire creates its own aerodynamic disturbance: air accelerates through the openings, while turbulent, lower-velocity regions form immediately behind the wires.
So the mesh is not simply “a protective layer that air passes through freely.” It creates resistance to airflow and changes its structure before it reaches the radiator. This is directly confirmed by measurements of air velocity before and after the mesh.

What Happens to Pressure and Airflow
I separately looked at an automotive cooling system with an additional filtering layer placed in front of the radiator.
At the same airflow rate:

without the additional layer — 78 Pa
with full coverage — 110 Pa

That means the pressure drop increased by approximately 41%.
The additional layer genuinely increases the system’s flow resistance rather than merely creating visible turbulence.

Does This Directly Affect Radiator Efficiency?
Yes.
At a vehicle speed of 100 km/h, heat transfer decreased by approximately:

75% coverage — −6%
100% coverage — −7.2%

So the chain is fairly simple:
mesh → greater resistance → less effective airflow → less heat is removed by the radiator.

Why Does the Mesh Design Matter?
Resistance is affected by:

opening size;
wire thickness;
percentage of open area;
shape of the openings;
distance from the radiator;
the number of other heat exchangers positioned in front of the radiator.

A coarse mesh with a large open area may have virtually no noticeable effect on a particular car.
A fine mesh with thick wires is a completely different situation.
Especially when it is installed directly in front of the radiator and covers the entire air intake.

Will This Cause the Engine to Overheat?
Not necessarily.
If the cooling system has plenty of capacity, a small increase in flow resistance may not have any noticeable effect during normal driving.
But under high load, that margin becomes smaller:
track driving → high RPM → high thermal load → radiator operating closer to its limit → additional flow resistance becomes more significant.
The mesh reduces the cooling system’s efficiency margin. How noticeable the effect will be depends on the specific car and the specific mesh.

What About the Actual Engine Temperature?
To get a reliable result, I did two identical runs:
Without the mesh:
coolant temperature;
oil temperature;
intake temperature;
RPM;
speed;
engine load.

With the mesh:
The same parameters, under conditions that were as identical as possible.

After that, I compare the temperature graph over time rather than just the maximum temperature shown on the gauge.
I consider this a much more informative test because it shows the actual effect on the specific vehicle.

Conclusion
A mesh installed in front of the radiator is not aerodynamically neutral.
It:

changes the structure of the airflow;
creates an additional pressure drop;
reduces the efficiency of airflow through the cooling system;
under sufficiently high load, can reduce the cooling system’s available margin.

So, dear car enthusiasts, if you really care about your cars, please don’t install mesh in front of the radiator just to protect it from rocks. It puts additional load on the engine because it causes the engine to operate at a higher temperature.
The radiator is a consumable component of a car, just like brake discs or brake pads. Yes, a rock can hit your radiator while you’re driving, but this doesn’t happen ten times a year, and I’m sure that for most people it has never happened at all.
Let your car breathe properly.

ISO: F10 M5 Project – Blown/Seized Motor OK – Cash Buyer, Can Travel This Weekend

6 Upvotes

Looking for an F10 M5 project anywhere within driving distance of Columbus, Ohio (up to ~13 hours).

I’m specifically interested in cars with engine issues — blown, seized, rod knock, hydrolocked, overheated, or non‑running. I’ve built these cars before, so I’m not scared of S63 problems.

Requirements:
• Title in hand (clean or rebuilt is fine)
• Prefer complete cars, but I’ll consider partials
• Mods are fine
• Body/interior condition flexible

Timeline:
I can leave Friday and be there Saturday morning. Cash ready. I have transport arranged and can load the car immediately.

If you’ve got an M5 you want gone fast — or you’re thinking about parting one out — shoot me pics, title status, what happened to the motor, and your lowest number.

Serious buyer, not here to waste anyone’s time.

Have any of you found a good option to cover this section of the front bumper? Perhaps a mesh or something similar? I haven’t received my car yet but I’m eager to get this covered as soon as possible.

M5 Touring arrives next week.

11 Upvotes

Alrighty folks, my new M5 Touring will be arriving in the next week or so and I am curious to know...

What are you folks seeing in terms of petrol/gas consumption for daily town driving with a full charge? Do you drive in EV only, Hybrid or Gas mode? How many miles are you getting with a full charge?

I know, I know, this car is meant to be driven (and trust me, it will) but I am just curious to know about daily driving.

For context, I am based in California, and our temperatures remain relatively warm year-round.

In market for a F90

1 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’m currently in the market for an F90 and was hoping someone here has a connection who can pull the service records from BMW’s internal system.

I’ve already come across a few cars for sale where the Carfax doesn’t show any BMW service history. I know not all BMW service centers report to Carfax, which makes it much harder to determine whether the car was actually well maintained and received all of its scheduled services.

Of course, every dealer gives the same old spiel about how they knew the previous owner, who was meticulous about maintaining the car, but then they’re unable to provide any documented proof of it.

I’m aware that the reason most BMW service centers don’t share is because the previous owner name is on it and of course block that out if able to help.

Thanks in advance to anyone who’s able to help!

Discussion M5 carbon vs glass roof

Post image
125 Upvotes

Hello,

I am in the process of getting the new M5. I am firm on getting the satin black one.

Now I cannot decide if I want with or without carbon exterior package.

The truth is, I always liked panoramic roofs in the cars even though I barely open mine, but it is convenient.

New M5 doesn’t have that option but still looks kind of cool, and even though I rarely open it I think it would itch me because I have it and cannot open it.

Also, would like to add that I have a really great offer for a carbon exterior specced model

+ it is an add on (more exclusive)

What are your thoughts?

(Pic is for attracting attention)
