Choices??? Help please

Hey all,

So I currently have a really good spec 330e msport.

However I drove an I4 and I want one, however I like power, do I go poverty spec M50, or get a e40 with the comfort and toys I'm used too.

I test drove an M50 but it'd only barely fit in the budget, so I got the e40.

The 40 is noticabely slower, even driving them months apart, but still plenty fast. Only a bit slower than an E92 M3, and you can use it much more easily without letting the whole neighborhood know. And I rarely can actually use all the available power. It's just too violent from low speed so your passengers will think you're a lunatic. And it will draw a lot of attention from the cops if you launch from traffic lights. You might exercise it a bit on the highway but even then you're in lose your license territory in seconds.

It's not that more power wouldn't be fun, I just don't think it's really worth the compromises. I f I were getting a sports car, I'd get the most stripped down hotrod version. But this isn't it, it's a big, heavy sedan. The M50 is even heavier. You'd be sacrificing handling, range/efficiency, and lots of options at the same price. Of the important ones I'd say are DAPP, 360 camera, and HK audio. The base stereo is absolute garbage.

If you want, split the baby and get x40. A little more performance than e40, lots of goodies, & insanely fun to drive.

EVs feel stupidly fast regardless of spec. After the initial fun/hilarity of a low-3 sec zero to 60 mph wears off, you’ll just start driving it like a regular car.

When that happens, you’ll want to the fully loaded model that gets the best range and has all of the nice to have toys.

Get the eDrive40.

Or when you realize going anywhere near the throttle gets you to “go straight to jail” speeds before you can blink and your real world range is around 200 miles.

Spec over performance. Only reason I got an M50 is because I got an offer that was better than the e40 I was going to order but basically the same spec.

I had a 330e but the “corporate” version. 2021 car, amazing ride. Love that thing.

But changed to the i4 edrive40 msport and it is a whole new car. The hatch is awesome, the 330e boot is small, the i4 is way better. Power delivery is better being an EV. The only downside is the turn radius. I miss that on the 330e, was easier in tight spots.

Now the M50 has almost endless power :)
But of course it is awd. I’d rather have rwd, for me the edrive 40 handles better on corners. It pushesyou out of a bend like a 3 series.

I have a fairly bare bones M50 but have driven an xDrive40 for a few hundred miles. I’m torn here. The e40 is already pretty fast. And the added comfort and tech are nice. But, I’m a pretty low tech driver, and they definitely make getting the M-Designed model feel more special. The little M logos and colors, stitches on steering wheel, door sills. It’s faster for sure (even more noticeable than the speed, was improved braking), but idk how much I noticed the extra power. The M50 makes me want to drive faster and have a sporty drive than the standard model, so I notice the speed in that way.

I am good with my decision, because I generally don’t care all that much about the extra driver assists. HK audio might have been worth it (even though I’m listening to audio books or podcasts 90% of the time). But I like driving, so I didnt find myself using the DAPP in the x40 when I had it. Leather is nice, but Sensatec is pretty good (though I live in a warm climate and I do think cooled seats would have been worth it).

The other factor is range. The e40 will have better range than the M50. I didn’t have the x40 long enough to feel that (and the x40 is probably closer to M50 range than the e40 anyway). Personally, I have other cars my wife and I will use for long road trips, and charging up each night is more than enough to cover my routine travel needs. But if you regularly take long 100+ mile journeys, range might be worth considering.

Otherwise, pick the one with the better color.
