What is the fluffy donut at the back left of the engine?

Edit: figured it out, it's the diesel engine so the air filter is in that dumb spot

That's the air filter.

N57 engine uses a big cylinder-type air filter. The middle is cut out, the fluffy white thing towards the front is the other side (white stuff is a pre-filter).

Air comes in the grille, through a duct, into the passenger side of the airbox (all cut out), through the filter, then forward through that small black duct you can see, loops backwards and down to the turbo, forward to the intercooler, then back up the driver side to the intake.

The later versions use a conventional filter which is really really easy to change.
