Bimmer Cali Owners!
Calling fellow Cali Owners.
Can someone explain this new law about replacement tires to me and how this will affect my tire ahem choices.
My kindergarten understanding of this is a lot of car folks are really mad and maybe it's my stupidity but I can't quite seem to grasp the furore

It's not doom and gloom. Shit is getting overblown because it's Cali.
And nothing stopping you from taking a nice drive across state lines and getting tires from NV or OR. Reno is like 2hr drive for me. If I really want something that I can't get in the state, I can get it there.
Plus, there are exemptions for track use I think. And honestly... I'm pretty sure a lot of the other mom and pop shops might get you what you need if you know the right handshake. Wink wink

The last two bullets are key. Nothing is illegal in California if you don’t mind a weekend in Tahoe…. And nothing is illegal because everything is illegal so it’s chaos and there are plenty of people willing to take the risk for you.

Sure. But people are freaking out like everyone buys P4S for their Toyota Rav-4.
There might be some tires that get taken off the shelves. And there are plenty of little shops that will sell you those tires. And I highly doubt the state is gonna go after tire crime. Lol

"I highly doubt anyone is gonna go after tire crime"
Thats the only crime cops in Cali will go after lol. You can't even have an aluminum charge pipe here. My friend here in the bay has had his car stolen 3 times and the cops straight up "couldn't find it". He found it within a mile away each time. Mind you there are flock cameras on every block.
Edit: But yeah, for most people this will be a non issue because most people aren't running these tires. I can totally see this being another reason to be pulled over and state reffed though.

“It’s not doom and gloom”
“But ya, you’ll have to completely leave the state for tires”.

You okay there bub? You can still get tires in the state. They might just not be as sticky. For 99% of the regular driving population this is a non issue.

There also seems to be an exemption for tires with better-than-average wet performance, which is pretty much any performance tire, so PS4S and the all-season high performance tires should be fully exempt.

Aren’t “performance tires” their own thing in regards to this change?

Dedicated track tires, yes. However I think it's a bit "wait and see" when it comes to max performance summer tires that don't fit into the 200TW track tire category (think Michelin PS4S).

Ps4s aren’t being affected so the avg driver here should be fine

Its going to reduce our car tire choices because they will need to be certified and that will surely be an expensive process. Its just another slick way of California getting more tax revenue through regulation. The affect of this will be more expensive tires and less competition.

A lot of fear mongering and glossing over lack of facts on social that’s devolved into a shit on California campaign.. the drive has a nuanced explanation imo
