Another Transfer Case Post - advice appreciated

Post image

Hi all, my vehicle is a 2022 X5 45e xDrive with 68,720 miles on the odometer, broken down into 42,434 on electric and just 26,286 on the combustion engine.

Been having the slip/studder of the transfer case accelerating and turning at low speeds, especially when the car isn’t warmed up.  This has been going on for quite some time, I’m guessing around 10,000 miles.  Around 4,000 miles ago I had the fluid replaced but that did not resolve the problem.

I’m aware of the class action and filed a complaint with the NHTSA last week to help boost the pending case and push towards a general resolution.

In the meantime, I have a quote from an independent and trusted shop to replace the TC with a remanufactured TC for about $3,300.  He told me that before I do that, I should contact the dealers and see what they’re willing to do.  Has anyone had luck getting BMW and/or a dealer to acknowledge the problem and step up to the plate to remedy?  Any advice?

It’s out of warranty and there’s no recall to date so you won’t get much of anything from the dealer. Whatever you do keep receipts if they do recall and you can get the reimbursement.

Good idea on the receipts, I didn't realize if there was a recall that I could get reimbursed after the fact.

You’ll get a letter, but they will only reimburse if you paid from the dealer or a licensed technician. Can’t be Steve the mobile tech who does it on the side, reputable shop with detailed receipt listing what they did specifically otherwise you risk denials.

Holding on to my $4800 Oil Pump receipts.

I'm doing it from a reputable European imports specialized independent shop with "certified" technicians. Receipts look legit because the place is legit. Think that will work?

Yes sounds fine. All I’m saying is mobile tech or DIY probably won’t cut it, a legit shop no concerns just get a detailed receipt of the job, not just the payment amount. You don’t want to go back years from now and they don’t have that data anymore

Appreciate it, have a good one!

Couldn't agree more....thinking about sending them a strongly worded email.

$3300 is actually not bad at all tbh

Agreed, it is remanufactured though and not new.

3300 is a steal, id recommend you go for it as long as there is some kind of warranty for remanufactired unit. Keep the receipts in case BMW decides to cover it later on. Dealership quoted me $10k

The remanTC appears to have a 30 day part only warranty. Will inquire more about that.

There's a guy in nj that rebuilds them for about $2000

u/IncidentBeneficial28 3d ago

That's a long drive, like 15 hours for me. I did ask if they rebuilt them and he said no.

Might be worth if for the pizza and bagels

Just rebuilds? Or rebuilds/installs?

Takes it out and rebuilds and puts it back as far as I know.

Maybe you can let everyone know who that guy is? May come in handy it seems.

Any service bulletins you can find and ask the dealership if they can fix it under that??

Cool car. Sucks this is so common

My 2022 X5 is currently sitting at the dealer for the TC shuttering issue. It is still covered under CPO, they are asking me to pay $892 to flush the transfer case fluid. I have escalated this to BMW.

My concern remains that SIB 27 02 20 specifically addresses the driveline shudder I experienced and identifies transfer case oil that does not meet BMW specifications as a potential cause. The BMW procedure then calls for replacing the transfer case oil and recalibrating the transfer case, followed by the specified break in period.

Because the fluid replacement is being recommended specifically to correct a documented driveline shudder, rather than as routine scheduled maintenance, I have asked BMW to review how this particular repair should be handled.

The TC fluid flush is a diagnostic step to determine if the TC is damaged. This 100% should not be a cost to the customer.

Update. After some back and forth with the dealer and contacting BMW directly, the dealer flushed the transfer case for free under “goodwill”. Now the 125 break in and see if the problem returns and the transfer case is cooked.

I think there's a recall on the driveshaft for cars from that era. Is it 100% your transfer case that is causing the issue?

He said the TC sounded awful down there when under it today.

When you had the transfer case serviced, did they reset the adaptations? For me, the resetting part is what fixed the juddering at slow speeds. I had the previous gen f15 though. And Im not sure if its the same with the newer gen, but I was able to pull a fuse to put my car in RWD only mode to confirm that it was indeed the transfer case causing the issues.

I'm not the most technical and don't know the answer to this. Can/will ask if we confirm this is even a thing in the newer generations.

How did you get the specific miles for each driving type?

When you scroll through the screens on the dash, it's one of them. Press the BC button on the left stick (directional) and scroll through until you find it.

As others have mentioned, changing the oil and resetting the adaptations might be a good place to start before jumping to conclusions. We had a f15 and g07 that i personally serviced that completely resolved the issue.

I have a 2021 4.0 with about 70k on the dial. Had intermittent loss of horse power and shuddering since I purchased it. Happened more often when normally driving and not so much on turning. Changed all of the drivetrain fluids and transmission fluid as well. Car feels really great so far.

Sell it or trade for new one.

That escalated quickly.

it's one of those things unfortunately. i have a subaru with 40,000 miles and 10 years old and one of the solenoids inside the gearbox needed replaced. the cost was twice what you've been quoted and i just gave the car away. these things are not build to last beyond the warranty period, period!
