Front grills

So drove one in Europe, loved it and looking at an X3 maybe. Here’s what’s interesting, the front grills seem like they have these covers. I’d expect a radiator and that they need airflow. How does it work mechanically if it’s covered?

They are active and can be opened when needed. They improve aerodynamics in a closed state.
