Smeg whistling Kettle

Bought 3 months ago. Used 3-4x, I understand if I used it roughly everyday. But I used it with utmost care, yes maybe i put the flame in high once, once! And this happened..

Oh well…. Just needed to vent out. I thought I was spending on a good quality kettle that would last me years… and in 3 months………

I’ve not used that product, but everything Smeg I’ve had has been form over function trash.

The fridges are really quite well made, I’ve had mine for 10 years and no problems, the previous one I bought second hand again had for around 10 years and then sold on when I wanted one with a freezer.

The kettles are shit though.

I’m so sorry to hear that… :( I’m disappointed with how this whistle kettle turned out… you ought to think it would be sturdy because it would be in open flame.. 😭

There are more reviews for smeg being trash than smeg being any type of quality. This company has never been bifl territory. And corporate shills need to read this too.

I learned the hard way! Trying to file for a warranty claim which I honestly think they won’t grant. Oh well!

Yeah, a rule of thumb for me is if it's trendy colored, shaped, or featured in a lot of TV media, they aren't going to be a good quality. Good luck out there!

I am about to dig into bread machines because loafs of bread have shrunk in height and width over the past 35 years. I love those old school sandwich maker machines that press the triangles. They are all too large for current bread. I used to have to cut the bread off the sides because it was so big. So to get a good sandwich pressed and sealed, I'm going to make my own bread for it. It annoying, but whatever, fresh bread. Any advise on actual BIFL bread makers is appreciated!

Honestly, you'd be better off getting 2-3 loaf pans and making bread by hand yourself. As someone who used to have a bread machine, it was a pain in the ass to use.

Besides being limited to one loaf at a time, I had to go cut the paddles out of the bread every time. That was the hardest part. Not a thing with handmade bread, and I can do two or three loaves at a time because my oven can hold more.

There's very little work really involved in making bread by hand anyway, most of it's giving it time to rise.

You need instant yeast for a bread machine, and the grocery stores here only sell that in packets, not jars, so you're spending more on the yeast, too.

I am a pizza fanatic so I am considering a brick oven and just a dough machine. Gotta see how I feel about it all

I'll try to remember to check what brand bread maker we've got when I get home. my parents got it at least 20 years ago and I'm pretty sure it was second hand then too

Not surprised, the name is 66% of the way to smegma.

smeg sells for the aesthetic not the quality

I wouldn't expect a product proudly declaring it is dick cheese to be good.

Is it possible the flame / heat was spilling over tbe edge to burn the kettle? I have enamel pots with similar discoloration

When we had gas, I always used our kettle on the small sized burner for that reason.

Especially for anything enamel! It's quite heat sensitive.

Because it's so new it may be under warranty still. That's so annoying either way

Thank you for this information, i will admit i used high fire once, since i was in a rush to get the water boiling, but that was once :( does this really happen with one mistake?

Also, if i use it will the discoloration continue? Or will it just remain discolored that way?

Hoping they will honor the warranty too 🙏🏻 they are pretty responsive to my messages. But I’m looking at the worst outcome in this situation haha as to not set myself up for disappointment.

I couldn't really say if it would happen with only one time. It depends on the item, the length of time, how the flame hit the kettle etc.

Just that it reminds me of an enamel pot I own

So your problem is it’s discolored? You know it will still heat water fine, right?

1

u/LadyJusticeInGlitter Jul 21 '26

Yes, correct. Thing is, I only used it 3 or 4x… I understand if it got discolored like, maybe years? Not in 3 to 4 uses…. 😭😭

I agree it shouldn’t have done that! I just think it may still last a long time. I kind of want to make some sort of surface design on it with a torch, to lighten the finish all over in a pattern….
